Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Elounda Beach Elounda

A Building Site

from Holidayagent
After looking at the brochures, a five star resort, we thought this would be a wonderful relaxing time. Not so, as the hotel has a major building programme going on along the waterfront, just by the 2 beaches. Only one beach could be used and the area is so noisy.

There is a responsibilty to advise guests that these works are happening. Sadly, it was not a 5 star experience at all. We agree with the other comments made on this site, that it is too expensive for what it is. It is not the package promised or even promoted in the photos and brochures. Also ,as others on this site found, you must pay at an excessive cost, for any extra.

We saw 2 situations with the watersports contractor in the week, that were potentially dangerous to swimmers.

The good point is that the staff of the hotel are friendly, helpful and try to do their best.
Management Response from MRassoulis
As this review is already 3 years old and the building work of the hotel finished in the spring of 2007, this review is not a true picture of the hotel as it is now.
The building work was on our new Yachting club suites that are at the waters level and give the guests the opportunity to experience the feeling of being on one´s own private yacht.
The Elounda Beach Hotel is renown for it´s famous Cretan hospitality and it´s ability to adapt and improve in accordance to our guest´s expectations. The natural setting of the hotel is second to non and its 245 rooms are divided into 26 different categories. There is an accommodation type for every taste and pocket here at this 5 star resort. The facilities at the hotel give our guests the opportunity to choose a different dining experience every evening of a 7 night stay. The ambience of the hotel looking over to the Sitia Mountains across the blue Mediterranean is unforgettable at sunset when sitting in the Verghera Jetty Bar situated right out into the sea. The mature gardens of the hotel are not only colourful but give an aroma of the heavy sweet scented Mediterranean flowers.
We hope we will have the honour of welcoming you again to The Elounda Beach Hotel in the near future.

nice place, great staff, 1 nice restaurant....others very average

from swisstoni
Really nice hotel, (as you would expect) great location and the staff are very helpful.
The traditional Greek restaurant is fantastic, but other are very very of the has 3 very diferent menus...strange; clearly need new/better quality chefs for the other restaurants.
However, lots of nice restaurants in nearby villages/ definitely do need a car
As per the other reviews for sister hotel, all the 5 star luxury comes at a more than 5 star price, but generally it is nearly worth it.
Didn't like the salt water swimming pool or the fact you get charged for using the gym or for anything else they can possibly think of.....
Management Response from MRassoulis
Thank you for the report you have posted on Trip Advisor. The report is now 3 years old and I am happy to inform you that changes have been made in the hotel which we would be happy to advise you about. Guests staying at The Elounda Beach Hotel are also invited to use the restaurants and facilities of our sister hotel The Elounda Bay Palace Hotel, thus giving an even wider choice of dining venues.
For prospective guests we have a department dedicated to answering all the queries that you may have about the hotel and local area including any queries that you may have about prices.
Our main swimming pool is seawater but our private pools are freshwater unless our guests have requested to change the water to seawater prior to their arrival. Many of our bungalows have direct private access to the sea and a safe swimming area.
The hotel has a weekly activity programme that is complimentary for our guests. A part of this is a fitness programme with our experinced fitness instructor including pilates, power yoga and stretching on a daily basis. For our junior guests we also have qualified staff on hand to create hours of activities and fun.
Not only do we have water sports and diving, we also have tennis, badminton, minigolf, snooker, 5 side football, jogging and cycling routes in the local area but a wealth of historical and mythological places to visit.
We look forward to welcoming you again to The Elounda Beach Hotel to be able to enjoy more of the Cretan Hospitiatliy.

4 star hotel for 8 star prices

from JamesRobertson
Not only is it expensive but they seem to want to charge you for virually everything - including using the gym. The restaurants are middlying but very expensive - the Sushi was more expensive than Nobu and frozen in centre.

Watch out for th ewatersports - run by different company- 60 euros for 15 mins on jet ski - and there are charges for pedaloes and canoes - these guys make an art out of charging.

Thi sseemed to be the same opinion from US, Germany, Switzerland and UK customers. Watch out for the prices of getting an internet connection - the Americans were amazed.

Will not go back.
Management Response from MRassoulis
When comparing the prices for The Elounda Beach Hotel with any other hotel of the same standard world wide, you will see that we offer very attractive and competitive rates for both accommodation and our facilities. Our pricing policy is with in the guidelines set out by The Leading Hotels of the World, of whom we are proud members. Our 5 restaurants all have different menus and have a wide choice of dishes for everyone. The fact that it is advisable to book in advance for our restaurants speaks for it´s self. The sushi is prepared by our sushi chef, with fresh ingredients, at the sushi bar in front of the guests, so how the sushi could be frozen in the middle is difficult to understand. The water sports are run by an independant operator and not by the hotel. They have special packages for our guests and are usually very busy from the moment they open until they close early evening.
Our internet connection, either for guests who have their own laptops with them or for those who wish to use our business center, is free of charge.
We hope that you will give the resort another try in the future and that you will become one of the repeater guests that return to The Elounda Beach Hotel year after year.

A bit better than average, but not as great as its marketing suggests

from LuAnton
Nice hotel, good rooms but.... Overpriced for what you get. The village and the beach belonging to the hotel are nice as well but -pricewise- you will be treated as the captive customers that you are. I've never seen a wine list with prices like this!
Nice Italian wines starting at more than 400 Euros. Ridiculous.
But we had a nice stay, service at the restaurants was friendly and efficient and the food was better than acceptable, though not great. The beach was nice and so were the watersports offered. We enjoyed our stay but we will not come back.
Management Response from MRassoulis
As your review is now 4 years old we would like to suggest to anyone reading the review to look at our new website, with the accommodation prices on Trip Advisor and our restaurant meuns and prices, judge for your selves about our pricing policy.
The Elounda Beach Hotel is one of the Leading Hotels of the World and the standards of the hotel are as high as, if not higher than, any other in this category. The expectation of our guests, are of world class standard and we endeavor to meet these standards. When we serve a drink it doesn^t just come in a glass but is presented to the guest, accompanied with a complimentary side dish, in an environment that creates an ambience that is unique to the hotel. The same for each of our 5 restaurants, each one with it´s own special atmosphere to make the guests dining, both a wonderful culinary adventure and an unforgettable experience.
The whole experience from the moment you step off the plane is orchestrated to provide our guests with a stress free, relaxing holiday and break from their every day life.
After seeing our new website perhaps you may change your mind about coming back and we will be able to welcome you once again to The Elounda Beach Hotel.

Affordable affluence

from Chris_Battersea
the Elounda Bay (sister hotel to the more expensive/exclusive Elounda Beach) is one of the Leading Hotels of the World and it should be. A stunning is one of our favourite hotels in Greece, let alone the world. If you want to stay at a premium hotel/resort with all of the modern conveniences but not feel you are in a big resort, this is the place! It is really for romantic get-a-ways or family holidays..It is NOT a package tour destination and is frequented by regulars who appreciate the weather, the facilities and gorgeous amenities offered by this special place.

The rooms vary, but all are very well appointed and comfortable. The more you spend, the better they get. The sea view villas with shared pool are amazing. The hotel has two beaches..sandy and small. Most guests hang out on thier private terraces or by the common salt water pool, or in the olive groves on either side of the beaches. Very laid back and relaxing. The hotel has several restaurants all serving different cuisine. The seafood restaurant is the 'signature' restaurant.

The downsides? The wine prices are extortionate. The new 'F' Fusion restaurant an over priced disappointment...and, that is about it. One of the best features is that you can stay at the 'Bay' and have access to the Elounda Beach hotel next door...the facilities there are also amazing. The water sports team, the Greek Taverna/Kafenion (the best in Greece!) and the new ESPA Spa (gorgeous!)...

the setting alone is worth the trip as Mirambello bay is stunning, particularly at sunset. If you can afford it, dont hesitate to stay will want to return!
Management Response from MRassoulis
Thank you for writing such a good report about our sister hotel The Elounda Bay Palace Hotel. We are always improving our hotels and the service in them. As your review is 4 years old there have been many improvements. The facilities of the two hotels are available to all the guests and so giving our guests a wider choice of restaurant venues and bars. The ^F^ Restaurant has recently been awarded the highly acclaimed ^Gold Cap Award^ for the year 2006. Its different dishes with unusual flavours based on the Mediterranean cuisine which are served to you on the waters edge, go to make a wonderful dining experience.
Both hotels are of similar style with many of the guests choose to change from year to year between them. The staff in both our hotels are ready with a warm welcome for all our guests and we hope to be seeing you again in the near future.

Great if you get a villa!

from Jaunt
When you pay these prices, you expect a lot. I notice that hotel reviews seem to be deeply effected by the hotel rating and prices. We stayed a a lovely hotel in Mykonos that was 1/3 the price of Elounda Beach, and you won't find a bad word about it anywhere. As prices go up, so do expectations. So we expected a great deal in July when it is "season 4", the only higher priced season starts the third week in July and is season 5. The lowest priced room is 600 Euros per night for 2. This includes a truly sumptious breakfast buffet. The setting is magnificent. We went without our kids, though this is a very kid-friendly resort. We also rented a car, which I highly recommend, otherwise you will feel stuck with the extraordinarily overpriced restaurants for dinner. Agios Nicholas is only 15 minutes away and offers many dining and shopping options. We did eat at the more casual Greek restaurant at the hotel, which was excellent and not absurdly priced. We checked out the other menus. When the simplest piece of sushi is $15 and a plain asian chicken dish translates to $38, I don't see the need to spend this. We did do the dinner buffet one night at 50 Euros per person. The appetizers and desserts were excellent, the entrees were inedible but it did not matter. FYI - Cocktails begin at 10 Euros and up. I don't think this is as high as someone else mentioned. The Grand Bretagne in Athens was more costly for drinks (but not for dinner)

More about the facilities. The hotel pool is saltwater, and not many people sit there, since the beach is lovely and the Aegean is nicer to swim in. They have numerous water activities, like water skiing and all sorts of water toys to sit on that get pulled by boats. Kids were doing this all day (at 30 Euros for 10 minutes). There are many excursions, but except for scuba and other boat outings, they are not that popular. The beach fills up by noon, so you can't get an umbrella if you get there late.

The air conditioning in the main building was inadequate so we upgraded to a water's edge villa. Wow. I could live there! I expected luxury room appointments like the Grand Bretagne, but they were not. But the setting made you overlook the ugly flourescent light in the bathroom and the naked light-saving bulb in the foyer. And beware, you need to request from the villa department that your chairs on your deck by the sea be reserved, otherwise you will get squatters from other villas on your deck and you cannot do anything about it. The squatters had removed my belongings and had there own reserved sign put on the umbrella and there was nothing I could do about it except have them bring and squish in more chairs on our deck. The other people did not speak English.

The hotel has many, many return guests for years and years and perhaps they aren't concerned with the details. But I was impressed with the guest host who wanted our thoughts and took notes on our comments. She sought us out at the free welcome cocktail hour (which was ironically on our last night).

They were fully booked at exorbitant prices. yes, I would go there again and get a water's edge villa, make sure my chairs were desgnated for my villa and allow a good hour for the breakfast!

Thank you for your comments on Trip Advisor about your family stay at The Elounda Beach Hotel.
We are always interested in what our guests enjoy at our hotel and on what we can improve on. So most of the comments that you have made have already been addressed by the hotel, for example the prices of our restaurants and bars. The hotel has 245 rooms and plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas for everyone, whether you choose one of our 2 beaches or amongst the olivegroves that surround the beach area. All our water front units have their own indvidual sun decks with direct access to the sea and their own sunbeds and umbrellas.
In all our rooms there are state of the art equipement and for those who require more hi tech, our Yachting club suites satisfy the most discerting of guests. There is so much to do around the hotel that some guests never move from the resort. On the island there are plenty of places of historical interest and of great naural beauty to make a visit to Crete an unforgettable experience.
We look forward to having you and your family with us again in the near future.

Expensive, Corporate but GREAT Kids Club

from A TripAdvisor Member
We just got back from 10 days at the Elounda Beach Hotel. On first impression we hated the corporate-type rooms (the phone next to my bed was the same one that I have at work and the curtains were electric) and the slightly dated and unimpressive lobby. However, we quickly grew to love the relaxed atmosphere for our kids. Our young children went into the kids' club for the first time in their lives. It was so comfortable - right on the beach next to where we were sunbathing and swimming. The kids and adults could run back and forth to each other and just enjoy ourselves together (and apart). We never felt over-run by kids, but always felt like the kids were welcome. A big drawback is the price. You have to be comfortable paying at least €17 for a child's plate of pasta (you can imagine the price of the adult meals).

We had a fun time, but it was very packaged and resort-ish. Good if you have a ton of money and just want to relax with your kids on a private beach. The mix of crowd was nice too (people of all ages and nationalities).

Thank you for the review that you have posted on Trip Advisor.
Here at The Elounda Beach Hotel we specialize in making all members of the family welcome. There is a wealth of activities for all. Our hotel rooms are equipped with the latest technology so to provide a stress free holiday where everything is taken care of at the touch of a switch.
There is so much to do within the resort with expert staff on hand to make your stay and enjoyable experience. The hotel is built with the Cretan style in mind, using local stone and wood in a way that the hotel blends in to the surrounding countryside. When coming to The Elouda Beach Hotel we like our guests to experience the true Cretan hospitality and it is this that makes our hotel stand out from any other hotel of its category.
The relaxed atmosphere, Mediterranean colours and scents form the mature gardens of the hotel along with the friendly, discreet and professional staff go to make an unforgettable stay.
We look forward to wlecoming you for another family holiday in the near future.

t believe the wine prices!!

from dee090
Stayed one week at the Elounda Beach in October 2005. Booked a private villa with own pool - which is not a cheap option. First impressions were not good when we arrived. Sofa covers were obviously stained and should have been replaced. Garden furniture looked like it had seen better days. When we arrived the water in our private pool was so cold you couldn't swim in it. We asked at reception the following day and they said they would send someone out to turn on the water heating system (surely this should have been done in advance of our arrival?). It took a day for water to get to a nice temperature. Steam room in villa was broken as was the jacuzzi bath - tho' both were promptly attended to when we mentioned this. Villa itself was really private but I feel that the furniture and decor looked tired and did not reflect the premium price tag associated with this level of accommodation.

As others have mentioned the bar prices are cripplingly expensive. The wine prices are just obscene and although we normally take a relaxed attitude on holiday with regard to hotel drinks prices - it was hard to stomach the ridiculously high prices for an average bottle of wine.

We ate in all the hotel restaurants. The Blue Lagoon has a very nice ambience but again the prices for dinner and wine are close to top London restaurant prices. A maincourse chicken curry was 30 Euros and if you wanted rice with it that was an extra 25 euros. A bottle of not so great greek wine was 80 euros. Add on pre-dinner drinks, water, puddings and coffee and you will see that 7 nights of dinner can work out pretty dear. (The Blue Lagoon is not their most expensive restaurant).

I agree that you can leave the hotel and go into Elounda and eat much cheaper but part of the reason we had chosen Elounda Beach was that it had several restaurants and we thought it would be nice to relax at the hotel and eat in different restaurants each night.

One other point to mention is the price the hotel charges for trips. We decided to go to Knossos and the hotel offer a list of excusions and prices. A much better (and cheaper) option is to go into Elounda and book a trip from the tourist centre. From memory the same trip is about one tenth of the price.

To be fair - the service in the hotel was very nice and any problems ie re pool/steamroom/bath were dealt with quickly and efficiently. Also, on the last night they asked if we would like to dine in any one of their restaurants and the hotel would pick up the bill which was a very nice gesture.

would I go back? No - not unless they review their wine list or I turn teetotal !

Thank you for your review and for giving us the opportunity to reply to some of your comments. We take the comments of our guests very seriously and as your review is already 4 years old we have already addressed most of the points that you refer to.
Our wine cellar holds over 900 labels of different wine, there are a few of which are numbered bottles from world famous wineries and with a price tag to match but the majority of the bottles are from local producers whom in the last few years have improved to produce a very decent selection of wines.
These are offered to our guests to accompany the different dishes that are served in our 5 restaurants.
Every winter we eveluate all our accommodation and refurbish and renovate where necessary. We do not, however, deviate from the traditional Cretan style of the hotel as this has been cultivated so the hotel is unique and blends in with the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside.
You mention the excursions that we have here at the hotel but the difference between the local tourist office excursions and the hotel excursions is that at the hotel they are private excursions with chauffeur driven cars to take you directly to the places of interest, where as from the local tourist office you are on a coach that picks up at all the hotels on the way. So there is an option for everyone tosuit everyone´s taste and pocket.
Our private pools are freshwater pools and are heated to 28 degrees, however, the temperature can be turned up at the request of the guest but with the understanding that it will take around 12 hours for the pool to reach the new temperature.
We would like to welcome you again to The Elounda Beach Hotel so that you could see some of the changes that have been implemented by the hotel.

Good but Expensive

from A TripAdvisor Member
We travelled to the Elounda Beach late September 2005. We booked a deluxe bungalow, but on arrival were given a complimentary upgrade. We were taken to our upgraded room which was very nice but the description of 'deluxe bungalow' had me intrigued and I asked to view the bungalow to allow me to choose between the two. The bungalow was very disapointing, rather drab with no shower. We took the upgraded room.
The hotel itself is very nice but very expensive. You expect to pay extra when you book a 5 star hotel, but the prices were bordering on the ridiculous. Most evenings we took a taxi which cost no more than 10 euros and went to either Elounda or Ag Nic where we found some very nice restaurants. The sunbathing areas around the hotel were fabulous and you didnt feel at any time that you had other people sat on top of you. We discovered a very secluded area big enough for 2 sunbeds and with nothing more than the sound of the lapping sea, fabulous weather I thought Id died and gone to heaven. We used the gym which was very good and well equipped, be warned though, you need to pay for it. Breakfast buffet was very nice with good selection of food and very pleasant eating area. Would I recommend this hotel? Yes, but be prepared to pay over the top if you drink and eat on the premises and unfortunatly you would need to have an upgraded room if you expect the usual standard of accommodation a 5 star hotel brings.
Management Response from MRassoulis
This review is now over 5 years old and so the accommodation that has been reviewed has been refurbished not only once but twice in the interim period.
The bungalows are individual rooms set in the grounds of the hotel with their own private gardens and sunbathing areas, private terraces on which to enjoy private dining or your sundowner drinks before your eveing meal. Even when the hotel is at capacity there is always a quiet spot to be found. The hotel has a complimentary weekly fitness programme and our expert instructors hold classes in Pilates and Power yoga just to name just a few. Many of our rooms are equipped with their own private gym, with state of the art equipment. A personal trainer is on hand to take you through your paces.
We have 5 restaurants and 4 bars in the hotel and there is plenty of choice at the varying prices as well as the invitation to sample our sister hotel´s dining venues. We do encourage our guests to sample the local tavernas but these cannot be compared with the service that we offer in the hotel.
We always look forward to guests coming back to The Elounda Beach Hotel so they can see just how their opinion counts by the way we continually improve and modify our hotel so to exceed their every expectation.

almost perfect

from A TripAdvisor Member
just returned from holiday.Stayed in a hideaway villa with pool and a wonderful view over the bay. Perfect seclusion and relaxation. The pool was heated to our specifications and was a good size.
The staff, without exception were friendly and attentive, going out of their way to make our holiday perfect. This included twice being presented with champagne and strawberries,a complementary massage for my husband and a manicure and pedicure for me.
The food in the restaurants with the exception of the restaurant in the hotel block was super. Do not eat in the hotel restaurant unless you like a canteen atmosphere. The other restaurants are lovely.
Our villa was decorated quite nicely but the bedroom furniture needed upgrading.
The pool and deck area was good but the sunshades needed some attentention as did one of the steamer chairs. I am sure if we had brought this to the attention of the staff it would have been dealt with but who wants to be bothered with a repair man around the place on holiday!
None of this spoilt our holiday and we will be booking up again for next year.
Management Response from MRassoulis
We are delighted that you enjoyed your holiday with us here at The Elounda Beach Hotel. It is the aim of the staff and the management of the hotel to exceed the expectations of our guests and to make their stay with us unforgettable.
The attention to detail and the little touches, such as the champagne and strawberries, are what make the difference and this hotel unique.
Our Cretan styled accommodation and the Mediterranean gardens create an atmosphere of relaxation and timelessness.
Our restaurants give our guests the opportunity to try different tastes and venues whilst enjoying the hospitality of our friendly, professional staff.
During the winter season, when the hotel closes, we carry out the necessary renovations and refurbishment. We try not to deviate from the classical style of the hotel as it has remained so popular with our guests throughout the years.
It is our pleasure to welcome our guests when they return so loyally to The Elounda Beach Hotel.
