Top Local Tips for Crete
The airport The airport is only very small, and also very busy, so just be warned that on arrival you have to queue to get into the airport (don't worry, its sheltered!) then queue to be checked in, then queue to put your luggage on, then queue for passport checks, then queue for hand luggage checks - overall a lot of queueing! If you want to buy duty free's I'd try to get there earlier if you can - obviously this can't be helped if you're travelling by organised coaches. Just try to be patient, and maybe take a drink, you have to get rid of this before passport control, but we were there 30 - 45 minutes before we got to this bit, so the drink was worth it!
Buses If you are staying at the Arina Sands you are so close to Kerkalion that you will find you can do most of the reps trips at a fraction of the cost by bus. we did Knossos for 12 Euros and spent the day, the rep wanted 37 Euros plus the 6 euro entrance fee and they had 2 hours. You can get an English speaking tour guide for another 10 Euros. You can travel the length of Crete on the buses which run every 15-30 mins, are air conditioned and have conductors who are happy to let you know when you have reached your stop.
Knossos Take a taxi and not an organised trip to knossos. Taxis are relatively cheap from Kokkini Hani. Get to knossos early morning - it opens at 8.30am and closes at 3pm. By 11am the place is heaving and because of all the stone work, in summer, it is sweltering by midday. early morning is ideal.
