Top Local Tips for Crete

Holidays with children If you plan to visit this beautiful island and you are a family with young children, your best bet would be to go to a resort on the southern edge of the island (Plakias) where the night life is low key and your children don't have to be witness to the ever growing lager lout scene in the bigger resorts. The Southern side is much less developed but there is still plenty to do and see and to keep the kids happy and the beaches here are very safe with much less surf than you get on the northern side.

Be Careful We made the big mistake of 1. going in July when the heat was incredibly hot. There was a heat wave everyday, the locals would tell us it was getting hotter. The heat was more than I could bear at times and made it impossible to do anything other than stay in the pool from morning untill night. We had also heard some horror stories about the taxis, so we were very reluctant to go out any further and use a taxi to get to see a different part of the city. I would advise anyone who is going to be very careful woth their money especially if they are going to use the taxis. Apparently women get treated a lot better and are not ripped off as bad but the men are given stupid taxi fares and if there is any problem then the driver will be very willing to take the person to a place they have not asked for somewhere far away and drop them off. So they have no way of getting back to their destination. Some lads got badly ripped off with the taxis when we were there.
