Basic but pleasant

This is, undoubtedly, fairly basic accomodation, but that needs to be weighed against what you're paying. Better accomodation costs A LOT more!! The rooms are small, but clean, and the beds comfortable. Ours was supposedly self catering, but facilities consisted of a fridge, a sink, and 2 electric rings- no oven, grill, or microwave. Rather restricts what you can actually produce!! There was a shower over a sit-down bath, but most rooms had only a shower. Hot water was only infrequently available. There was a TV in the room, but no remote control, so we couldn't use it- not that we ever felt the need to! The Hotel is also close to the busy Crete ring-road, so traffic noise is pretty constant and the rooms aren't sound proofed. Having said that, we found Michael, the owner or manager, extremely friendly and helpful, in the typically Cretan way. The hotel has a pleasant bar right next to the small pool, which has sun beds. A very short walk away is The Almyros River Club/Hotel, which has a huge pool overlooking the beach, with a bar and lots of sunbeds, and for the price of a couple of drinks we were allowed to use those facilities. Just bellow this pool, the Almyros River flows into the Sea at the start of a long sandy beach, which forms the first third or so of the half-hour walk into the lovely port of Agios Nikolaos. To get into Ag Nik by bus is very cheap, but buses are, as has been said, a bit hit and miss! Taxis are 6 Euros each way. A 10 minute walk from the Hotel is the small bay of Ammoudara with a nice beach and tavernas, plus a small supermarket. Once you get your head round it, this actually has a lot going for it, and we would gladly recommend it to anyone who doesn't require 4 star facilities.

The Almiros River is a great base for Agios Nikolaos-just a short walk away along the coast. The food is basic but tasty (bar-b-que was great)the bed linen/towels were changed often enough. The general cleanliness was okay for a short stay-bear in mind the 2 star rating but the host Mikaleas is wonderful, he looked after us very well, very friendly and cheerful. We had a wonderful time and met some really nice people and would definately go back.

After we had read 'an honest review' from Any and Vicki, we though we could deal with basic accommodation. We were put in a very tiny room with a small bed and no windows except from the window in the door. After having complained to our rep, we were put in a slightly bigger room with more light. We did not find the owner very friendly. We were present at a shouting match between him and a client. Luckily it was our last day than. We did not feel comfortable among the public of the hotel either. Breakfast is basic and not really looked after by the owner. We had to ask several times for bread or yoghurt as it had run out. Meals are available. I would just try the fresh food, like salad. Rest is standard. Air-con is 45 euro for a week and safe locks 25 for two weeks. When leaving you need to leave your backs in the reception area for 9 hours where they are not locked away for you or pay for your room for 6 hours and leave the bags in reception for the remaining time. It eats into your last da on the beach! So, for the hotel we would never go back! The beach close by was gorgeous! We spend a lot of time there and were amazed about how much the Greeks exercise. We seemed to have landed in bat and ball city!!! Really nice. We didn't mind the walk into town. To the centre it took us half an hour. Please try a trip to the mountains in a hired car! Really quiet and beautiful landscape! Conclusion: try another hotel in the same environment!

Superb beach, bit remote for shops

Good basic accommodation, very clean. We opted for a/c at extra cost - well worth it ! Superb beach only a few minutes walk away, has a mountain stream running next to it. We saw heron, kingfishers etc. It is a bit of a way to the nearest shops but there's a cheap if a bit erratic (time wise) local bus. Hire a car and explore to Lasithi Plateau, go further west and there are some very nice secluded beaches. Would go again, mainly because of the beach which gets 10/10.

Just returned from Almyros river hotel, a reasonable place to stay if you are not expecting too much. Our rooms were basic spacious and clean and did have a small wall mounted television, but not much else. There were 3 of us but we only had a couple of plates, one bowl, no spoons, nothing to boil water in, so self catering is a no go. Being a bit remote there are no tavernas locally. The owners were friendly and polite. Safety deposit boxes are available for 14€ and air conditioning for 35€. Meals were available, but we did not eat here as it was a bit quiet and secluded. Town is about a twenty minute walk along the beach, walking the highway is a bit dangerous and would take a lot longer. A bus stop is located outside the hotel which is 1 euro 10 cents each, but this service is not that reliable, one night we spent one hour waiting, only for the bus to drive straight past us without stopping. We used the taxi’s everyday, this costs 6€ each way so gets a bit costly if going into town in the day and to eat at night. The beach is a 4-5 minute walk through the almiros beach hotel, this is outstanding, a sandy beach really clean and crystal clear water. Rooms have to be vacated by 12 noon so it makes it a long day with no where to return too, our flight was at 0415 pick up from hotel 0100. This is our 3rd visit to ag nik, personally we prefer the other side of ag nik – mirrabella bay area. Don’t think I would return here again, but that is just my opinion. Hope this helps potential visitors.

I recently returned from the Almiros River Taverna. I stayed for 1 week but the staff there made sure it was the best week we had!! I went there with my mum, little brother (6) and older sister (16) and me (13) they were really welcoming and upon our arrival at roughly 4 am George (the owner) came out and greeted us! At that time in the morning the place looks really remote but after a good nights sleep and an inclusive breakfast it looked lovely!! Although we did not spend all of our time there we went to the local beach where there are lots of water sports to do and we also visited another pool. we did 2 of the trips spinalonga (which is a lepra coloney boat trip) and the createn night up in the mountains we were going to visit water city but after discovering it was not very good decided to give that one a miss!! Overall we had a great stay and we will definatley be reatuning to the Almiros River Taverna soon thanks for a great time !!!

Perfect place for swimming and lying in sun. Pools were big and only 50m to one of the cleanest, sandy beachs on Crete. Rooms were fine and great view from balcony. No shops in direct vicinity but only 20 min walk to Agios Nicolaos. Bit windy too. Would be happy to go there again.
