Was somewhat disappointed.

Beware, if you looking for a deal during the winter season, it may be better to pay the additional cash. I was truly disappointed, since half the space went to the balcony, which was never used. This establishment is clean, but very small and especially tight. I must have unpacked a million times (I loss count), because of the lack of furniture in the room. The bathroom was the size of a small closet. In all fairness to the staff, they were very pleasant, the breakfast (which is included) was good and the Acropolis was a 5 minute walk. This is definitely a no frills hotel, and if you like space I would choose the Heridion, which is right around the corner.

I ended my trip at the Intercontinental which is farther from the Acropolis, but in a different league altogether.

A hotel of good location

It is quite close to the Acropolis (within 10-15 mins walk). Other attractions, such as the Ancient Agora and the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Plaka are within walking distance. The Acropolis Metro Station is about 4-5 blocks away. Indeed I made use of the metro to go to the airport. You can buy ticket at the counter inside the metro station. The metro station staff are both friendly and helpful.

The food provided by the hotel was good and was better than I expected.

The major weakness is that the room is quite small and it is difficult to turn around in the bathroom. If you wish to stay in this hotel in the next few months, you should avoid a room facing the construction site next door or the noise may wake you up at about 7:30 am in the morning.

Phillipos was Great!!!

We stayed at Hotel Phillipos after a recommendation from a friend who stayed in April. We couldnt have been happier! Check in was easy and when we got to our room, 409, we could see the east end of the Acropolis. The view, of course, wasnt of the whole thing but we could see the Parthenon while lying in bed. The room was large for European standards as, we had plenty of room to have our suitcases and room to move around. We actually had a bathtub, although small and the shower was larger than most Euro hotels we have stayed at.
The breakfast was not that great but it was included in the price and it filled us up until lunchtime. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They offer good tours from the hotel in which a bus will pick you up and take you to the rendevous point.
We booked online and got our 5th night for free. Also on the website they offered packages with the tours. We would absolutley stay here again!
Also, right down the street is a charming restaurant called Vitro which we had new years dinner at. The people are very friendly here as well as the place next door called, GOds REstaurant

Clean Effective - Great Location

Had a good room with a small balcony and a view (just) of the Acropolis. Breakfast was a bit disappointing after reading other reviews - so settled on the fantastic Greek yogurt drizzled with honey each morning.

Great location - spent hours walking from hotel, round Acropolis, to Monastiraki, onto main shopping street, down to the Plaka with virtually no traffic whatsoever. Plaka was great for pavement restaurants etc.

Hotel had obviously been recently refurbished. We also popped across to the sister hotel Herodion which has a fantastic view of the Acropolis. Sat there and had tea sent up - great service!

The Philippos is located close to everything that you need however our room was a bit shabby, the tv didn't work, remote control was broken and taped together and the beds are really hard. I think that it is in desperate need of refurbishment.

The Philippos is an excellent Athens hotel

Great location although some may find the rooms small. The showers are also small but overall we felt our stay was excellent. This is the third time we have stayed at the Philippos and we cannot imagine a better place to stay in Athen's. It is a short walk to the Metro, Plaka and other sites around Athen's. Staff was very friendly and breakfast was good.

We stayed at the Philippos Hotel and were completely satisfied with our stay. The location--within blocks of the Acropolis, Plaka, etc.,--can't be beat. We felt like the hotel was a good value and would stay there again.

My husband and I stayed at the Philippos for 1 night. Our room was small, clean and just perfect because we spent very little time in it. I would not recommend the room if you are planning on hanging out or relaxing for hours at a time in it. We reallly liked the breakfast which had enough variety to keep us both happy (if you are looking for an American-style eggs and bacon breakfast this is not for you).

The location of the Philippos was amazing. We were able to wake up at 9am, eat breakfast, and still beat the crowds to the Acropolis. It is an extremely short walk to most of the historic sites in Athens including- the Agoras, the Plaka. It is also a short walk to the Akropoli metro stop - a real $$ saver if you fly into Athens.

In a nutshell: If you are stopping in Athens on the way to or from the islands - this hotel is the place for you.

I was travelling alone, stayed for 2 nights, room with a double bed (for some reason there were big wooden steps leading up from the bed to the window?!). My room was at the back so no view, but there were rooms at the front with balconies. Bathroom was rather small but adequate and you had to climb over the high bath edge to get into shower, so not ideal for everyone. The location was great, under 10 mins to Plaka, metro stn few mins walk and I felt safe walking back to hotel. You can see the Acropolis from the street. The best part of my stay was the breakfast, fabulous!

Handy to Acropolis

Not a bad place to stay, handy to Acropilos. We paid $110 euro a night in July. Walking distance to shops and Metro.

Pros - Quiet, close to Acropolis, internet available downstairs for 4 euro an hour, friendly staff, 5 min to metro station.

Cons - Not close to much food options, some suspicious looking surrounding streets, smallest shower ever.

Top Local Tips for Athens

Go to the Platanos Restaurant If you want affordable and authentic Greek food, try the Platanos in the Plaka. It opens at 8pm and when we ate there, we were the only non-Athenians. The lamb with okra was phenomenal!

View of Acropolis-Worth the Extra Expense! One thing I didn't mention in my post is that our room did not have a view of the Acropolis. In retrospect, I would definitely spend the extra money for a view. You only go to Athens once (well, maybe) and it is absolutely worth a few extra Euro to have the opportunity to see the Parthenon lit up at night from your balcony. I wish I had spent it! Next time I will.

Maps We frequently got lost and found the tourist maps not completely helpful. Try to get a more detailed map. This is also helpful when your taxi driver doesn't speak English because you can at least show him the location of your destination.
