Fabulous staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
Here is a copy of the letter I sent to the Plaka Hotel

Dear Plaka: I want to thank you and your staff for a most pleasant stay
> (May 18-23) in Athens. In particular, I wish to praise Maria at the front desk for her invaluable help while we were your guests. She got us restaurant reservations, gave us good touring directions, and arranged a more convenient car rental pick-up for us when we left the city. Her enthusiastic and professional demeanor gave us complete confidence in her, confidence that was always confirmed by happy outcomes. Please commend her for us.
> Thank you again for the best hotel stay during our 3-week
> vacation. We will recommend the Plaka to our friends.

Great location!

from fotoman
Hotel Plaka is definately a great place to stay if you are in the Plaka district. The location is excellent. 15 min. walk to the Acropolis; 10 min. walk to Syntagma square and shopping and restaurantes all around. The two kinds of rooms are both very nice. The room with a view of the acropolis is a little smaller than the room with a view of the city, but still very nice. All of the help speak english and will try to help with anything you need.

Location, location

Excellent location- 10 mins stroll from central Syntagma square. Right next to main shopping street (Ermou), Monastiraki, and Plaka. Walk straight up Kapnikareas street to find a leafy square full of bars and restaurants where you can enjoy the popular frappé coffee. Modern airy rooms, although with small bathroom (shower, no bath). Lovely roof-top terrace with loungers, tables and chairs (bar in summer?)-views of acropolis and nearby cathedral. It was a bit noisy at night, but I stayed while they were celebrating Greek Independance day, so that no doubt had something to do with it! Simple breakfast, but something for everyone. Would stay there again.

3 Star Hotel in an EXCELLENT Location!

from TravelPrincess
We stayed 4 nights at the Hotel Plaka in mid-February and I highly recommend this hotel for its location. This indeed is in the "Heart of Athens" an ideal place to stay, close to Archaeological sites, restaurants, flee market, great shopping & public transportation as well. Everything was walking distance, with an added bonus of having an internet cafe, mini-mart and starbucks a few steps away. Hotel staff was very helpful and friendly. We had a triple room on the first floor, 3 single beds that were a bit too firm. The room had AC, hairdryer, TV a small refrigerator and a balcony. We had a good sized bathroom and plenty of towels. The buffet breakfast was always fresh and plentiful (typical European bkft with assorted breads, cheese, cold meat, hard boiled eggs, cereal, juice, tea & coffee + fresh yougurt and honey). Unfortunately since it was off season, the Rooftop Restaurant was closed. Being in the main tourist area, the hotel could be noisy at times, but this did not ruin our stay at all. This is a great 3 star hotel that we would definitely visit again.

Nice hotel, great location, helpful staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel was in the perfect location for my wife and I who love to walk and plan trips ourselves. It's 5 blocks from Sintagma square, 1 block from the nicest shopping area in downtown Athens, 1 block from the Plaka touristic shopping area, in the middle of the restaurant and club zone, next to the postal office and 2 blocks from the Monastery subway station (that takes you directly to the airport for 5 Euro). The hotel is a classic 3 star hotel that provides what you need, the feel is roomy and definitively clean. Breakfast is free and plenty, and in case you have any question all staff members at the front desk are very helpful. We were there 4 days including the new years eve, and were able to take wonderful pictures and video from the roof, which has an unblocked view of the Acropolis. I'll definitively be back there in my next trip or stop over in Athens.

You pay for the location

My husband and I stayed at the Plaka Hotel for three nights (beginning of October). There are two very remarkable things about this hotel: the great view of the Acropolis from the roof garden and some rooms (ask for a room with a view) and the location, of course on Plaka near all the restaurants and souvenir shops and above all, near the most important archaelogical sites. The room was O.K., the bathroom also, however the beds were a little bit hard. Anyway, I think that for the price we paid the state of the hotel could have been better. I presume you pay for the location. I stayed an additional night back from the islands at the Athens Cypria hotel, and I recommend that one far better. Same price, a little bit farther from Plaka (but no more than 4 blocks), nearer to Syntagma Square, but far nicer.

Wonderful Location, Friendly Staff

from GSVA
My daughters and I recently shared a triple room at the Hotel Plaka. Our three single beds were all lined up in a tiny space. The air conditioner ran on a remote. The breakfast was typical basic European fare - by the 4th day I went out for breakfast.

That being said, the hotel is in a wonderful location. How luxurious to wake up early in the morning and walk to The Parthenon! There is also a comfortable, large sitting area on each floor which was great for reading and relaxing.

The staff was friendly and helpful - even providing us with excellent restaurant suggestions. The best part of Hotel Plaka is the view from the rooftop bar. I would definitely stay there again!

Perfect location

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at the Plaka for four nights in June, 2004 and found it to be a perfect choice. I requested an upper floor room at the back and had a wonderful view of the Acropolis. The location is perfect for walking Plaka and Monistoraki. The room was spotless. Although the bathroom was tiny, there was plenty of hot water. I found the staff to be very helpful with assisting me in making phone calls. To summarize, I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Perfect for sightseeing

from DC_Maryland_Dave
The Plaka hotel is great for those people who spend most of their time sightseeing and just need a place to put thier heads down at night. The hotel is nicely decorated, modern, and clean. The room we had was very small, with an even smaller bathroom. I am an averaged size guy and had difficulty turning around in the shower. That is only a minor issue compared to the incredible views of the Acropolis from both our room and the roof garden. I found the service to be very courteous and helped us out whenever we needed it. The free breakfast is nothing spectacular, but what is offered is good and fresh. The hotel's location could not be better, that part is perfect. The Acropolis and the Plaka are on one side with great dining and views of the city. Shopping and just about all of the other sites are on the other side of the hotel. Almost everything is within walking distance. For having just a couple days in Athens this was a perfect hotel for us!

The hotel itself is not bad, it very well could be worse. I came to Athens for my cosuins wedding and Athens itself was worse then I expected. It is very dirty and filled with all these strays. But back to the hotel, it is very clean and the rooms are all newly decorated so they are not bad. the hallways are nice, all new rugs and dark moldings. the staff was friendly and eager to help. There was a great place to eat right across the way from the hotel. The hotel is in a great location if you want to be in the plaka(where all the stores are). I just wasnt impressed with any of the stores, it is more like an outdoor flea market. For athens, this is a great place to stay.

Top Local Tips for Athens

Late Nights.... In Athens, even during the week nights, it is customary to eat dinner late.....sometimes as late as midnight. The nightlife is one of the best in Europe as most place stay open until people leave. So if the sounds of people playing music, laughing, and congregating in the street as late as 2am will bother you...get over it and have a good time. :)

from/to airport Metro is the fastest (~6 euro). Monastiraki is the closest station to the hotel but there are crowds around it. Syntagma is a bit further but the walk is more enjoyable (Mitropoleos street). This station is closer to the airport. Also, there is an airport bus X95 (e3.20) terminal next to Syntagma Sq., a 40-min. ride at night (don't take during the day unless you have plenty of time). Both depart every 30 min. Metro starts ~5.30 and ends around midnight.

Surprising Restaurant Along Tourist Row There is a restaurant that looks like a big tourist trap, but it's actually really good. The name is Attalos Colonnade. The address and phone is 9, Adrianou Street, telephone 210 3219520. It's along a row of very touristy looking restaurants on a part of Adrianou that faces the Ancient Agora. We got lured in at by one of those Athenian restaurantier hustlers at a weak moment and ended up being really glad we did. The food and coffee were great! And the service was great, too -- very friendly waiters. It's an airy, bright, modern interior with guitars and traditional string instruments hanging on one wall. Outside, you sit next to the suburban train track, but it's got trees and ancient ruins mingled together and then a view of the Agora.
