Top Local Tips for Athens

Keeping bags safe. Make sure to keep all money and important things such as passports and credit cards away from the top of any bag carried. Keep an eye on bags at all times especially when in a crowd. The best places to go into are those where people are not trying to usher customers into.

Get thyself to the Acropolis early! I heard that you should get to the Acropolis early to avoid the crowds but what we encountered put the "t" in throngs of tour groups. We didn't get up super early so when made it to the Acropolis it was crawling with people like an ant hill made of sugar cubes!

Can't get to the airport by Metro before 6:15 AM! If you have a choice when to depart from Athens airport, just note that public transportation doesn't start running until 5-5:30 am so there is no way to get to the airport by public transportation before 6:15 am. If you need to be there earlier, you have to take a cab which for us (2 people, 2 bags coming from a hotel near Acropolis) cost 45 euro! I chose the early morning flight because of lower cost but I'm sure the difference in cost for a later flight would have been less than this taxi fare!
