From the balcony of our room, you look up to the clear night sky. The stars are there but amazingly so is the Parthenon, so close you feel you could touch it. Clean beds, clean rooms with washbasin (shared shower and toilet). Best value we have found in any city.

Top Local Tips for Athens

Easy to find Unlike many "good finds", the Hotel Phaedra is easy to find. It is on a weel-known street although not a crowed one. It is on a corner. You don't have to go through any back allies. It is a short walk from where the airport bus leaves you and taxis can take you there without problem.

Monastiraki flea market The Plaka District is bulging with souvenir stores just aching to get their hands on your hard earned cash. Right next to Plaka is the Monastiraki district, just north of the Acropolis. Just next to the metro station is a great flea market that also sells lots of local stuff. Open every day.

Stay off the main drag! If you're looking for a place to eat in the Plaka, you'd be well advised to look outside the main street (Adrianhou) and the large squares. The food ranges from acceptable to terrible and will always be overpriced. As with any tourist area, just work your way back a couple of streets and you'll find some real gems.
