Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Electra Palace

Great Value all around

from 2trvl
We had stayed at another five-star hotel when we first arrived, but I found this to be a much better value. Granted, they no longer had the rooftop pool (and what a view one misses though they said they were going to build another) and the "Spa" had lots to be desired and it had a very small indoor pool, but the beds were comfortable, the rooms weren't too small and they were quiet, the location was conveniently in the Platka area and the staff was most attentive. It is a simply gorgeous hotel and it was certainly not overly expensive. (The other hotel had service charges for everything and was just outrageous!) I would most definately return to this hotel.

A wonderful stay in Athens

from MTJTraveller
We had a WONDERFUL stay at the Electra Palace Hotel. Though reviews were sketchy (not that many written, not as highly recommended as other hotels), we decided to stay here for it's location and the bonus of having a balcony.

What a delightful surprise this hotel was. Staff was curteous and most helpful in obtaining a taxi, mailing cards home, deciphering my phone card and how to use it in Greece, and finding an open pharmacy on Saturday (watch out they are mainly closed!).

We stayed here at the beginning of a wonderful trip on the Windspirit ship to Venice and the Electra Palace was such a great beginning! We purchased our room on Expedia I belive, locking our rate in US dollars rather than Electra's website. Essentially we received an upgraded room (witha blacony view of the Acropolis) for the rate of a regular room by booking on Expedia. I would highly recommend the upgraded room, after all you are in Athens and what could be better than to see the Acropolis from your balcony?!?!?!?!?

Breakfast each morning was GREAT! I felt like the overindulgent American as we feasted on fresh mozzerella and olives, olives, olives...Fresh squeezed orange juice was a delight and of course the fresh fruit was great!

The location was wonderful, easy walking distance to everything. We even took the Metro from the airport and it was only a couple block walk from the station. Another plus!

Thank you Electra Palace for a wonderful stay! We will be back!

A wonderful Hotel!

We were given a room on one of the lower floors looking out over an alley and into some apartments. When we checked in, the desk clerk did not understand that we had requested a room with a view of the Acropolis, I even showed him a copy of our reservation confirmation. We told him we would gladly upgrade; he acted as if everything was fine. It certainly wasn't! In the room, the very nice, helpful bellhop got some of my wrath (but not directed at him), he immediately telephoned the desk and spoke loudly to the clerk, came over to us and told us to return to the reception area, as everything was taken care of. He retaind our luggage and followed us down to the receptionist where we wer given an "apartment" for only 50 euros more, on the seventh floor with a double balcony, sitting room and extremely comfortable bed! We never saw that receptionist again. The rest of the staff were wonderful, very helpful, did their best to make our stay memorable - they succeeded! Esp. that bellhop, we ran into him daily and he made us feel as family members! One other staff member, a waiter from the restaurant was equal to the bellhop in truly providing outstanding service and kindness. We wish we knew their names so we could complement/thank them to the Hotel Management.

The food was great, service impeccable, and a great value for the money.

After being ripped off in Rome, Naples, Venice and Florence, we found Greece to be a far greater value for our $s, and the people seemed to be far more considerate, welcoming and genuinely friendly. They even drove inside the marked lanes! The Electra Palace exemplified this to a tee!

We will definitely return to Athens and The Electra Palace, but probably not Italy. (Well, maybe Naples...)

Location, Location. The Palace has it all! And, our thanks.

We spent 3 nights here on a recent tour around Attica. We chose the hotel for its proximity to the Plaka and the fact that it is a 5 star. Too many times we have chosen 3 or 4 star hotels in the Med only to discover their standards are far lower than ours, so this time we went for a luxury class hotel. And this hotel does live up to its 5 stars (although when we stayed at the 5 star Sofitel at Athens airport a few days later, the Electra was found retrospectively lacking somewhat, but probably only because the Sofitel is utter luxury and excellence and well worth the money for an extraordinarily comfortable night’s stay!).

We would definitely recommend the Electra Palace to anyone. The reception area is like a chic gallery. Probably a complete waste of space, but beautiful and welcoming nonetheless. The air conditioning is a godsend in the summer heat. Breakfast was excellent. The cornflakes were real, the fruit juice was real and even the milk was real and not UHT rubbish. I don’t know what it is about the Med, but it’s not often we find these ‘real’ items on offer, only their pour cousins. The only thing missing from the room was tea and coffee making facilities. Perhaps that’s just an English thing, but it would have been welcome, especially given the price we were paying per night.

The hotel’s location was perfect for us. Unlike other hotels that announce their closeness to a particular landmark only to have you walking for miles to actually get there, this hotel really is as close as it says to the Acropolis. The Plaka, the shopping and the restaurants are just down the road (turn right out of the hotel, walk a short distance down the road and there you have it). The Acropolis was a short distance away (and, if you get a chance during your stay, have dinner at a taverna called Strofi – the view of the Acropolis lit up is just spectacular from their terrace).

We didn’t get a room with a view of the Acropolis. I wasn’t going to pay extra to see it when it’s visible from pretty much everywhere when you step outside the hotel. And who goes to Athens to sit in a hotel all day? Save the extra money and use it to buy all those good and cheap products on offer in the streets outside!

Wonderful hotel

I just got back from Athens and I thought the Electra Palace Hotel was terrific. The room was very clean and spacious with a wonderful view of the Acropolis. There is also a restaurant/bar on the roof offering amazing views. The lobby is very impressive and the service is impeccable. The bed was extremely comfortable--I probably slept better there than I usually do at home! Most importantly, the hotel is in an excellent location. It's right in the middle of Plaka, the area with the Acropolis, all the shops and restaurants, the Ancient Agora, and 95% of the things you came to Athens to see. But it's right off of a quiet street so you can actually get some sleep at night. I definately plan on visiting Athens again, and when I do, I'll be staying at the Electra Palace Hotel again.

t pay extra for an Acropolis view room!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at the Electra Palace hotel in Athens from May 23rd to May 26th, 2005. It was a fabulous hotel - spacious rooms, good breakfast, courteous staff - and the location couldn't have been better. It's in the Plaka district right behind the Acropolis so it's within walking distance of great restaurants, shopping and close to most of the archeological sights you'd want to see. The problem I had with the hotel was with the Acropolis view room I booked. I saw a picture of an Acropolis view room on the hotel's website and thought wow! - I'll be willing to pay extra for this! I thought it would be neat to be able to sit out on our hotel balcony at night and view the Acropolis especially as the full moon was on May 23rd. What a shock when we got our room and went out to look at the view. We were looking at the back of the Acropolis and most of what we saw was the windows of other peoples' apartments, laundry hanging out from rooftops, garbage, the street, etc. What a disapointment! The best view of the Acropolis is from the rooftop terrace at the hotel (absolutely fabulous view!) and you don't even have to pay extra for it! I would highly recommend staying at this hotel but save yourself a few $ and don't book the Acropolis view option - it's not at all worth it - especially when you can see everything you would want to from the rooftop terrace.

Very pleasant stay

from Donn
This hotel exceeded my expectations after reading the mixed reviews. Refurbishing is generally to a high standard. Service good, breakfast offers no highlights but is quite adequate. Only gripe is like many Greek hotels (and despite spending lots of money on renovation) seems to suffer from poor sound insulation - could easily hear my neighbours snoring and talking!

What a wonderful trip!

Other than the rooms being classically european, that is, somewhat smaller than we see in the US for this class of hotel, our experience at this facility was outstanding. The staff was more than willing to go far beyond that expected to see that our needs were met (particularly at the front desk). We really can not say enough about the staff!

The hotel is beautiful. Lots of marble and very high quality finishes everywhere. Very, very clean. The breakfast is classically american, not just a donut and coffee. The location is just on the edge of the Center City. Not in the noisy middle of the Plaka, but within an easy 3-5 minute walk. It is located in a very safe area all hours of the night.

We had a wonderful trip largely due to our choice of the Electra Palace.

Honeymoon in Greece

from A TripAdvisor Member
What a wonderful hotel!! The Electra Palace more than met all of our expectations. We were in Athens for the start of our Honeymoon and what a wonderful start we had by staying at the Electra Palace. Friendly and warm staff, English widely spoken, very warm and comfortable 7th floor hotel room, but these were not even the best features. What then are the best features? In our opinion the best features were: location (just steps from the Plaka) and the buffet breakfast. When we return to Athens in the future, the Electra Palace will definitely be our hotel of choice.

Not value for money

from MyriamS
I was there from 26 to 29 dec. 2004 the furniture are nice for both room and lobby but the service are too poor, except for the front desk (they are really helpful): my bathroom was cleaned only once (towels daily). The ashtray and the tables in lobby was always dirty of everything: paper, water, glass... The buffet breakfast is nothing to be proud of: every morning the same eggs (not express), sausage, brioche and juice (not fresh). The dinner is rich and not expensive but the service is very slow (1 hour for grilled shrimps!!). The spaghetti are quite good (I'm Italian), but stay away from the carbonara!!!
It's impossible to switch off the light on the balcony and the curtains are too thin so that the light can enter all night!! The room at 1st floor (just above the restaurant) has no balcony (just 10 centimeters to let you open the windows), it is too noisy and it's too warm, in addition it's impossible to switch off the warmer ("If it is still hot you can open the windows a bit" !!!) .
Its position in Plaka is really really the best! you're just a step away from everything: 5 minute to acropolis, 2 minute from syntagma square and the metro, 5 minute to the old market and the most famous "tavernas".
All considered if I will be in Athens once again, I will stay there (just in winter, the summer is too hot and no roof pool) even if it is overall expensive for the services provided.

Top Local Tips for Athens

TRuly Excellent Its excellent and cheap - live and learn UK... The solution may not lie in taxing motorists to death when there is no viable alternative... You can get anywhere using bus or Metro for peanuts and the fare structure is simple.

t benaki museum excellent, opens til midnight on thurs and is free....well worth a visit.

Good food in the Plaka Try the Plaka Taverna on Kidathinion St in the Plaka. Take the time to relax and talk to the waiters (especially about football!) and you'll be rewarded with a trip to the kitchen to choose from real Greek food not on the menu. Class.
