Top Local Tips for Athens

Taxis - beware The rumours are true about the taxi drivers. They ALL will rip you off if they can. Always ask the front desk at the hotel approximately how much it will cost to go from point A to point B and then ask the taxi driver as well. If they get to the destination and try to rip you off, yell at him as loud as you can. They are cowards and will back off and charge the proper amount. ALSO, don't get stuck in a place where there is no other transportation except taxis to take you out of the area. They know that and will charge at least triple the amount or let you walk away. Also beware of the scam from the Pereus port. A taxi driver will offer to take you to the fishing village near the Port for a reasonable amount and deposit you at a restaurant. The restaurant will invite you in and charge an enormous amount of money for fish. The taxi gets a big percentage of this. If you don't order there are no taxis to take you out of the area! You walk uphill.

The Plaka spend the money to stay in the Plaka area. Much nicer area and hotels with quiter streets

Metro To Airport Not every subway on airport line goes to airport. Look for one with plane symbol. We didn't and had to change trains. Approximately every third one goes all the way to airport.
