Top Local Tips for Athens

Food & shopping be sure drink the frappe with milk and sugar. Take you to the Aiolou street and pick one cafe from the stack. The Ermou street is the main from Monestraki to the Syntaghma. Most brands located on this street. If you go behind to the Ermou and Aiolou you can find the cheaper shops. Taste the Souvlaki in the pitta(bread)... All Greek coffee, Greek souvlaki, Greek delight, Greek shirt and much more like these are totally generated from the Turkey. Come to the Istanbul end see the sightseeing, Turkish foods and the shopping. Athens is small like a bug relative to the Istanbul.

Common Features of Greek Hotels Some things that need to be noted about Greek hotels. These features apply to virtually ALL hotels we experienced in Greece, not matter what the location or the price point. 1) bathrooms are small - its not the quality of the hotel, its just the norm 2) elevators are small - again, common 3) uninspired continental breakfast - it doesnt change much, no matter where you go 4) parking is non-existent in central locations (what else would you expect in a city thousands of years old that forces residents to park their cars on sidewalks???) I just wanted to share this with anyone looking for a hotel in Greece. I have read many reviews that give very low ratings to a hotel, but only because they didnt like one of the things I noted above. Then that review suggests going somewhere else. Well....that doesnt help because all of these 'negative' features are common no matter where you go! Hope this helps

No tipping! We were told expressly NOT to tip Athens taxi drivers and now I know why. The number on the meter means nothing; they typically add up to 10 euros to the fare showing on the meter and have some flimsy excuse as to why they did that. So pay the fare and get out - and don't leave a tip.
