The Best Place to Stay in Athens

We stayed at the Ava Hotel in August 2005 and wouldn't think of staying anywhere else in Athens. It is located one block from the heart of the Plaka on a quiet street. The rooms with balconies are magnificent and have views of the Acropolis and the Temple of Zeus. As if all of that isn't good enough, the staff at the Ava is warm, friendly and exceedingly accommodating. We will be back in Athens again and will wouldn't think of staying anywhere else.

A quiet oasis......

The Ava Hotel is a quiet oasis in the midst of a bustling city. The location couldn't be better... the heart of Plaka, a few steps from restaurants, banks and shopping, major historic sites, and transportation. The rooms are immaculate and spacious with fully furnished kitchenettes and a stocked mini-bar. A kiosk outside the building sells everything from razor blades to cold drinks and snacks. The staff could not be friendlier nor more helpful.
The breakfast was plentiful and enjoyable both in the dining room and on our veranda overlooking the acropolis and Hadrian's Arch.
Our daughter, son-in-law, and two year-old grandaughter joined us in Athens and found their Ava Hotel apartment to be the perfect accomodation for travel with children.
Our six-day stay at this hotel made this trip to Athens our most relaxed and enjoyable one yet, and we will absolutely stay there when we visit Athens again!

A wonderful experience

Yes, the rooms are modern, spacious and very comfortable but what cinched our exceptional experience at the AVA was the staff. Eleni and George - among others - made us feel welcomed from the moment we arrived. Whether responding to requests for local recommendations, sharing a bit about Greek culture, or simply addressing hotel services, their staff is the best. The cleaning staff is also noteworthy as we were exceptionally pleased by their efforts. Set back just enough from main streets, it is quiet and relaxing and ideally located for walking to major attractions, shops, and dining.

Simply Fantastic

AVA Hotel is one of those rare gems that seems to have everything a traveler could want. The rooms are huge by European standards with furnishings that are both functional and stylish. Every room has a spacious bathroom and kitchenette, and many have fold-out couches which turn into king-sized beds for the kids. The hotel was remodeled in 2004 so everything looks and feels new. The staff is so friendly and helpful that you'll enjoy just standing around the lobby chatting with them. The location is perfect; just a few steps away from the main streets of the Plaka, five minutes walking distance from the Acropolis, and within fifteen minutes walking distance of almost every major attraction in the city. Amazingly enough, though, the street the hotel is on is very quiet at night despite being in the heart of the tourist district.

Feels Like Home

After a ten-hour flight to Athens, arriving at the AVA was indeed a pleasure. As first time travellers to this wonderful city, we were both thrilled and amazed at the service provided by this small, but comfortable hotel. The staff was welcoming and friendly, as well as knowledgeable. We were provided with information about authentic Greek restaurants and the best sightseeing tours. AVA's excellent location in the Plaka District made it possible for us to travel to many of the main attractions of Athens by foot.

Although described as a "regular apartment," the space was more than adequate. The cleaning staff did an exceptional job, as the room was extremely clean.

The breakfast is a perfect way to start a day of sightseeing or shopping. Should our future travels take us back to Athens, there is no other hotel that we would consider.

Huge beautiful rooms, great price

My husband and I went to this hotel for 6 days in April and we have nothing but great things to say about it. Both of us have have travelled in various areas around the world and we agree that this hotel offers generous space, modern comfort, a desirable location and costs a lot less money than most of the big size hotels we considered in Athens. Staff was very friendly and courtous in giving us tips for places to eat and activities to do. The location offers tons of restaurants within walking distance. You can also walk to the train station though it's a bit of hike (though there's tons to see along the way!). Certainly one of the best value we've come across compared to many other major European cities.

Great location, but no soul

The AVA is located in Plaka 5 minutes away from the Acropolis. We rented the suite and had a view of the walls of the Acropolis from our terrace (not the Parthenon). It was a spacious room. However, the hotel lacks any soul, the furniture is bland, the decor is bland, the staff are ok. The breakfast was very poor, given the rates that they charge. They also tried to get us to pay 10 Euros per person per day for the breakfast, though this was never mentioned during the check-in.

Conclusion - it is a good base for the centre of Athens and near the major sites, though I would not stay there again.

The AVA Hotel and its staff are real gems. The rooms themselves, including the bathroom, were downright spacious. The AVA's location couldn't be better for anyone wanting to walk out the door and wander into Plaka or the Acropolis. As if the location isn't good enough, the attention we received from the staff was impeccable ... on the same level as one would expect in a high-end bed & breakfast.

All of the AVA's staff consistently, patiently and enthusiastically answered our many questions, providing timesaving advice on what to see and how to get about. They also made calls for us to find out the hours of the sights we were interested in seeing. In one instance, when we returned to the hotel after not finding a restaurant in the adjacent Plaka, they even offered to walk us there! In all my years of travel, I have never received such attentive and personable service from a hotel/motel.

If I ever have the good fortune to return to Athens, the AVA will once again be my home base.

My husband and I spent 7 days in Greece, including two prior days at another hotel in Athens, but it wasn't until our final three days in Athens when we discovered the Ava that we finally felt like guests.
The hotel is family run, EXCELLENT location, spacious suites, and very clean. We had a kitchenette, living room, bedroom, large bathroom, and balcony. Furniture and decor is tastefully selected and the view from the balcony is fantastic. There are wonderful little bonuses, like guidebooks and magazines about Athens tourism waiting for you on the coffee table so you can curl up on the couch and plan your next adventure.

Staff is very friendly and helpful, and they'll bend over backwards for you to make sure your stay is enjoyable. Breakfast in the morning is served early (for Athens time) but a nice selection.

This is the place to stay in the Plaka - don't go anywhere else!

PS - don't bother paying for a transfer from the airport. Taxis are fine, and from the airport to the Ava it's about 40 Euros.

Perfect Hotel

I stayed in the AVA Hotel from the 4th till the 15th of July, and I was surprised by the quality of the hotel. Nice, spacious rooms, which were thoroughly cleaned every day. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I had a magnificent view of the Acropolis and Hadrian's Arch from the balcony. The location is just perfect, with all the attractions (and metrostation Syntagma) within walking distance. Just around the corner you'll find one of the most enjoyable places of Athens. If someday I'll come back to Athens, I will stay at the AVA Hotel again!

Top Local Tips for Athens

Musuem of Cycladian Art At the moment (March 2008), two and half floors out of the 4 floors in the museum are closed to the public, but the museum still charges the full entrance fee, which is one of the most expensive in Athens (5 Euros per person).

Use the Metro! The airport is pretty far out of town...think Heathrow (London), not Logan (Boston). The Metro from the airlport to the city takes about 45 minutes and costs about 5 Euros each. A great deal, especially if you are staying in the Plaka. It leaves the airport on the half-hour. Most of the attractions in Athens are clustered around the Acropolis and Plaka. You can do almost everything on foot. We never even thought of using Taxis.

Use it The metro is top notch, gets you everywhere, cheap, clean, and on time.
