We stayed at the attalos hotel in September & were very pleased for what we paid. the room was plane but clean & fresh towels were supplied daily. the staff was extremely friendly & always willing to help. the breakfast was also good & the view from the rooftop garden was fantastic. The location is ideal,we walked to Acropolis (not the shortest walk - i think it took us about 30 mins) & the Plaka area. The aircon we had was very noisy so it was a bit annoying at night but not the end of the world! and there were a lot of dogs around & we could hear them throughout the night (when we turned the aircon off!)
Nice hotel, great location

The Attalos is a nice clean hotel with a great location to the Plaka. If you are staying on a friday or saturday, get a room at the back. Very loud and very late.
Great Location!

My husband and I stayed at the Attalos in Sept. 2004 and were pleased with our stay. The rooms are very basic, but they are clean and the hotel provides fresh towels daily. The room we got was quite a bit smaller than the one they show in their advertising, but it was fine. The breakfast was good and the service friendly. The location is great. Basically, you can walk anywhere that is of interest to tourists. It's right next to the Plaka and Psiri and not far from the Acropolis. It also has an amazing rooftop terrace that has a fantastic view of the Acropolis and of the city.

Stayed at Hotel Attalos on June 10th for 4 nights. Location is wonderful, easy walk to Acropolis, Temple of Zeus, Plaka, etc. Rooftop bar is awesome with an amazing view! The rooms were clean - standard Europeon room with twin beds (what is it with that anyway!). The breakfast isn't worth the extra 16 euros - you find something for half that at the delicious bakeries that are on every corner! If you are on a budget and just want a nice, clean room, then I highly recommend this hotel!

we really enjoyed staying at this hotel

We spent 2 nights at the Attalos Hotel in June 2004. The room was lovely and we found the staff friendly and helpful. The hotel is relatively cheap, is conveniently situated, and the view of the Acropolis from the roof top bar is amazing.
Very Convenient!

We were pleased with the European standards of the Hotel Attalos. We choose this hotel from the recommendation of Matt Barrett's website. We arrived on 7/20/04 and stayed 2 nights. We were on the 3rd floor and had a balcony but unfortunately only had a small wedge of a view of the Acropolis through the buildings that surrounded us. We asked for a room with a view, but it was mostly of the buildings next door and the alley below. The room was small, but very clean, nice wood floors, simple but nice, new furniture and the bathroom, although very small was very clean. This room had recently been remodeled. They gave you enough towels and they were normal size. The sheets were clean, white and new, but they had holes in them??? The room also had a small frig and a safe. The roof top bar was wonderful at night, the view of the Acropolis was amazing! Staff on roof top bar was great, very attentive. They serve other things besides alcohol like ice cream, milk shakes. We got a great deal at 66 Euros per night(w/breakfast) for 2 people through -------------- Booked another night by phoning the hotel directly as we were leaving Greece, 8/2 and had to pay 80 Euro (w/o breakfast) When my husband quoted the rate we paid 2 weeks before she said they never had rooms for that rate??? Breakfast was good, buffet/continental style with hardboiled eggs. Wonderful Greek yogurt, honey, cereals, juice, cheeses, sliced meats, breads, etc. The lady preparing and serving the breakfast was so kind and pleasant, nice start to our day. Matt Barrett raved about the staff, but we found the people at the front desk to be the least helpful, they didn't go out of their way. Never saw or met the people Matt mentioned on his site. The major plus is that this hotel is so close to the Monastiraki Metro station, the Plaka, the Acroplis, shopping, resturants and much more! A Great Location! Oh, we stayed in room 214 the night before leaving Greece, it was not as nice, smelled musty, no balcony, noises coming from bathroom above. It had 3 single beds and was a long and narrow room. Air conditioning in both rooms worked well. We will stay there again as long as we can be on the 3rd floor or above. It was a good value for the money especially at this time of the year near the Plaka.

If you are on a budget and want to stay in the center of Athens, this is the place for you. We stayed there one night. The rooms are not too nice... showering is a bit challenging (tub has a step - must see to understand), but all-in-all the hotel serves it purpose. You are very centrally located and have a metro stop at the end of the block. The staff could be more friendly. Essentially, it is a good deal for what you pay.

I stayed in a triple room from 14 - 17 June 2004 with my wife and 19 yr old daughter. The room was small, but clean. The A/C worked great. The shower head in our bathroom was broken and water sprayed everywhere. We were on the side of the hotel next to the main road. The windows did not stop the traffic noise from coming through at night when trying to sleep. The real highlight of this hotel is its location and the fabulous roof-top bar (They serve drinks up to midnight, after that you can bring your own) with a great view of the Acropolis. I have stayed in a number of hotels in Europe and I feel that I got what I payed for with this hotel. I have stayed at more expensive places and felt like I was paying too much.

Perfect for location

I saw this Hotel on Matt Barrett's website. He said that he stayed there when in Athens. If it was good enough for a frequent traveler, I would give it a try. Perfect for my wife and myself. Ask for a room on the back side of building with a view of the Acropolis. This for only 80 euro's per night plus breakfast. When I go back to Athens this Hotel will be my first choice.
Top Local Tips for Athens
Hellenic Cosmos
We only came upon the info about this place by happenstance in a brochure and were happy we did. We arrived in Athens the day before their big snowstorm in Feb 08 and nothing was open. We tok the metro out to Kallithea (http://www.athensinfoguide.com/wtsmuseums/helleniccosmos.htm this is a link that will give you a map as well as some infomration about it.) and had a ball. We saw the Imax type presentation about the Ancent Agora and a virtual reality show about the Olympics. The Ancient Math exhibit was fantastic! Interesting, fun and give yourself (and any kids over 6 or 7) at least an hour or so. There is a cafeteria with basic offerings and free internet access and computers. The staff is helpful and all speak English. The only disappointment was that the gift shop had no books in any language except Greek.
Tidbits
1, Be aware of any store that does not give you a receipt. They are the ones who will tell you one price but charge you more. 2, If you stay in a central location in Athens you don't need to take a taxi. The Metro is a great way to get around and most areas of interest are within walking distance. 3, If your not faint of heart, you can drive a car in Athens. Rent a GPS and stay alert.
Get in and Get out
You only need 1-2 days in Athens to see the Acropolis then get out as soon as you can and go to the islands or other parts of Greece.
