We (couple with 2-year-old boy) stayed 4 nights at Athos Hotel (Athens, Plaka) in May 2009. The hotel is well situated and the room was clean, the receptionists were really friendly. Even though, we would not go back, because we had a serious dispute with the hotel owner. We booked our double room with a baby cot through e-mail; the rate was 75 EUR incl. cot and taxes per room. When I arrived at the hotel after a long journey, I was as inattentive as to sign a paper which stated that the rate was 75 EUR plus 13% taxes. Later we went to the hotel owner and showed her the printout of her e-mail confirming the rate of 75 EUR. She said that since I signed the paper at arrival, her email is not valid any more. We tried to explain how immoral her approach is. She said that we got linens for the baby cot for free (as if it was not natural!!) and a big room (it was not at all big). She added that if I had said at the arrival that I want a cheaper room, she would have given us a smaller one, but that would have been really tiny for the 3 of us. We told her that she should not have confirmed a room for 3 persons if she is not willing to accept the agreed rate for the particular room. Later, we heard that ours was not the first case like this. At the end, after we had told her we would call the police, she accepted that we pay 75 EUR (plus 6 EUR/breakfast), but we really had a bad feeling in that hotel.

The Athos was located in Athens, Greece in the Plaka area where there are lots of great restaurants and shopping within easy walking distance. It's located on a more quiet side street. But it was the owner Nina, and her son Nikos that made our stay so wonderful. Honestly, they made us feel like we were part of their family. They helped us with tour reserations (we did not speak the language) so that was invaluable. I can not say enough about how absolutely incredible the people at the Athos were. Helpful and kind, and the hotel was reasonably priced and worth every cent!

Clean hotel/rooms, safe, and enjoyable stay at a very reasonable price. Location was excellent. A quiet street location. Well within quick walking distance to Plaka, Syntagma and all sites. Perfect, central location. Small restuarant next door is excellent and open early and late, when you want to experience traditional, homecooked meals. Staff was very professional and helpful. Highly recommend this hotel if you want a basic place to stay that is reasonably priced.

Top Local Tips for Athens

Do not take the ferry and the flight the same day All Ferry Companys are not reliable in their schedule. The traffic in rush or not rush hours can make your trip a nightmare when trying to catch a flight the same day you are returning from and island. We had a 5 hour window between the ferry at Piraeus and the flight to Amsterdam, but the ferry was 2,5 hours late, catching your baggage takes a LOT of time + the highway was a parking lot= we loose our plane. Dont do it.

Buses to the Athens Airport Take one of the express buses to the airport. For 3.20 euros, it's a tremendous bargain. Check with the tourist office or your hotel to find out where to catch the bus. And show up early: the buses fill up fast, and you don't want to stand all the way to the airport!
