Top Local Tips for Athens

Be careful @ restaurants The restaurants in Athens targeted tourists like no place I have ever seen, and I have traveled quite a bit. They charge for everything (water, bread, butter) so make sure to be careful. I'd also check out a couple place in the area you are wanting to eat for the best prices, because seriously, a gyros is a gyros, no matter where you go.

Airport transportation to the Plaka If you are staying anywhere in or near the Plaka, once you arrive at the airport and collect your bags head down to the street level and ask for directions to where the city buses leave for Syntagma Square (city center). Buy a ticket on the #95 bus (3.20 Euros) and it will take you directly to Snytagma Square. From there you can either walk to your hotel (if it's reasonable distance), or take a taxi. Even if you do have to take a taxi it will cost dramatically less than if you had taken it from the airport. As an alternative to the bus, for 6 Euros you can also take the Metro train to Syntagma. That stop is perhaps 2- 3 blocks from where the bus stop is. The Metro is a bit faster, but we enjoy the bus because there's so many sites to see along the way.
