Historical Traveller Reviews of Herodion Hotel

My favorite hotel of the trip. Fantastic Food.

from A TripAdvisor Member
We were on a 14 day tour of Greece, and this was my favorite hotel. The lobby was lovely, staff were gracious. The beds were so comfortable, I smile thinking of it. Also they had the best breakfast of any hotel in our trip. 6 kinds of juice 6 kinds of fruit goat milk yogurt, pancakes, eggs, sweetbreads, etc. When I come to Greece again, I will stay here, the food alone is worth it. And the beds! And it is so close to the Plaka just 4 blocks, and there you are in shopping heaven!

Good location, reasonable hotel

from dugongs2
The hotel is well located for the tourist part of Athens and is minutes walk from the plaka, acropolis metro station and say 10 mins from the acropolis etc.

The downside of the location is it is touristy so expect to pay far more for restaurants and service is not always friendly.

The hotel was being refurbished when we arrived and a Friday afternoon nap was constantly interrupted by banging and drilling however this stopped at 5 and then the hotel was quiet for the rest of the weekend.

We stayed in a second floor room looking over a quiet street however traffic noise was apparent from buses and lorries - not constant but enough to be annoying - although the double glazing cut this out completely. Another issue was no air conditioning only heating in the room. Not sure if this was because of the time of year as the room had a ducted unit on the wall which would appear to cool but we were told by the porter if you want to cool room open window which was amusing but a bit poor in a 4 star hotel particularly given the street noise. The bathroom was very small, shower was an attachment to the tap although worked ok was a little short and bath narrow so felt cramped and the double bed was two singles pushed together not even joined. TV had CNN and BBC World on cable.

Breakfast was a buffet eggs, bacon and continental selection. Only one tiny 2 slice toaster which was impossible. Overall OK not exceptional. We did enjoy a room service afternoon coffee and chocolate brownie which was excellent for a small room service fee.

Overall location location location and good for a weekend sight seeing in Athens. For £60 a night thought it was reasonable value although Greece is not the bargain it once was.

Good for the price

Just got back from Greece; stayed at Herodion Hotel for 3 nights. Hotel seemed to be a 3 instead of a 4 star. Small room but clean. Nice lobby with somewhat friendly front desk personnel(except for a few grouchy old men with glasses). The breakfast buffet was wonderful! Hotel is within walking distance to the Acropolis, Plaka and to metro train stations which you can get on to different places in the city. The hotel has internet services by the front lobby for a nominal charge. Their restaurant is so-so but make sure you go out and walk at the Plaka to get some variety.

Nice Gem of a Hotel

Stayed with a larger group at the Herodian. It was VERY clean, the beds were VERY comfortable. Bathrooms very acceptable.

It is within wonderful walking distance of the Plaka (shopping restaurant district), the Acropolis, and the Agora.

When making reservations I recommend getting rooms 412, 414 or 415 for great views of the Acropolis. In room 412 I could see the lit acropolis at night while resting in bed. You may also go to the 5th floor roof for wonderful views of the lit Parthenon.

The Hotel Restaurant is good, the breakfast buffet is excellent by European standard, the Ice Cream at the hotel was agroup favorite.

Staff was outstanding.

Terrific location and helpful staff

We stayed at the Herodion Hotel for a total of five nights. The location is terrific. It is two blocks to the pedestrian walk, and the hotel is very close to the Acropolis and to the Plaka. The staff was very helpful to us. The rooms are a little small, but we tolerated that because we were so delighted with the location. Breakfast was good. The hotel is attractive and on a quiet street. Computer is available in the lobby for a small fee. I recommend this hotel!

Great location

Just returned from the Herodion and can not praise the hotel and staff enough. I was there with a group of 20 for 3 nights, then returned for a night after sightseeing for a week in Greece, and then for an additional night after a week to Crete and the islands. The rooms are very clean and many have a great view of the Acropolis. Within easy walking distance are many excellent restaurants, the Metro, the Acropolis, and the Plaka.
Stayed here 3 years ago and the high quality has not changed. On a previous trip to Athens I stayed at a so-called 5 star hotel that was horrendous.
Highly recommend the Herodion and I will stay here again on the next trip.

Pricy but with a great location

from OttawaMimi
We were originally booked at the Phillipos which is the Herodion's sister property located just around the corner. When we arrived at the Phillipos, we were informed that we were being upgraded to the Herodion. They immediately sent a bellman to transfer our luggage.

Everything was a breeze, check in, check out, getting a taxi to the airport. Breakfast is buffet style with lots of variety. Service was friendly and efficient.

Only "negative" comment is the ridiculously small bathroom (even by European standards) with only half of a shower door and no curtain.

Pricy but with a great central location with the Plaka and Acropolis within walking distance.

Superb Breakfast!

We've stayed here end Feb'2005 and would highly recommend this hotel - great location, walking distance to Plaka, Metro & Akropolis. I must agree that the restaurant is expensive, however you have some good restaurants all around the hotel including one next to the hotel. If you are staying here you MUST go to eat out at TO KATI ALLO a very small restaurant which is on the right side of the road when walking to the Metro - couldn't get enough of that delicious food! A local couple run the restaurant, cook different menus daily - fantastic food, where the locals go to eat. We've travelled with our 3 year old and we enjoyed our stay here - views off the balcony, nothing to write home about, didn't try the view from the roof & restaurant though. Oh Yeah, the hotel serves range & also fantastic cooked breakfast everyday - wished I'd lifted the lids of the dishes earlier (discovered last day).

My partner and I have just returned from a 4 night stay at the Herodion hotel. We enjoyed our stay very much. The location was ideal, the rooms comfortable with a great view of the Acropalis. The brekfast was good with plenty of choices. On arrival at the hotel the staff on the reception were friendlyand helpful. The only small downside was that we found the barstaff surly and not particularly welcoming. We did not let this spoil our enjoyment and would not hesitate to book at the Herodion again.

Good hotel, good location, good price.

My wife and I went to Athens for about 4 days last year in mid March. This hotel we found to be located in a good area and it was very clean with friendly help. It is small, and the rooms are smaller than most North Americans expect, but by European standards they are nice sized. The place is clean, balcony's are big, roof top terrace has a great view of the Acropolis. The free breakfast was bearable and the food at the cafe was fair.

The Akropoli Station is located a short walk away and there are news stands to buy drinks at all over. Just across the street from the Akropoli station was a decent restaurant and about 10 minutes away from the hotel was a stip shopping area where there were other eateries.

Athens is a walking city in our opinion but be prepared for steps. This hotel is located very close to the entrance of the Acropolis Hill. Other sites we found were easy enough to get to using the train or just walking.

Good hotel for the price (which we paid last year about $90 a night).

Top Local Tips for Athens

Eating in the Plaka area. This is the main tourist area of Athens, and has some good places to eat. But some cater solely for tourists and are rather average to say the least. Go up some of the side alleyways that lead up towards the Acropolis rock and you will find some quieter and better tavernas, with good views and lower prices.

After the Acropolis After seeing the Acropolis, return by walking down through the old city through miriads of tiny laneways and dozens of restaurants in the most beautiful settings.

Use the metro! Metro from the airport is efficient, clean and safe and inexpensive! As it is from all points ...
