Prime location

The location is definitely the biggest thing going for this hotel. Literally below the Acropolis and minutes away from the Plaka, a great shopping district in Athens. The service was great and the food was superb, although maybe a little pricey. If you want to visit Mars' Hill, the Acropolis, and the Plaka and walk from your hotel, this is the place to stay. Our whole group had a great time there.
Great Location But Choose Your Rooms Wisely
from araxas
After almost 2 weeks touring Europe, I was ready for an exciting couple of days in Athens before returning to the States. Following the recommendations of a local travel agency, I reserved a 3 night stay at the Divani Palace, one of several "5 star" hotels in the Plaka area. The hotel is a somewhat pleasant, modern facility, with a great breakfast buffet and wonderfull location. Only minutes from the Acropolis, Plaka, and historical city center, visitors can easily venture out for day trips as well as pleasant cafe adventures in the many shops and cafes in the area. Thats the good news. The bad news was the room we were provided. A hot, somewhat humid enclave, next to an elevator and stairway that was "1 star" all the way. When I inquired about changing rooms I was politely informed that all the rooms were filled for a convention, yet I talked to lady about 10 minutes after my conversation with the desk reception men ( who always seemed irritated whenever anyone asked them a question) who had gotten a room without a reservation quite easily, convention or no convention. To make matters worse, there was a sanitation strike going on, and my "great balcony view" as advertised in the web based site for the Divani, was in reality a side street with run down apartments and a pile of garbage larger than a bus. The air condition wasn't turned on until the last night, even though temperatures were approaching 80 outside. Next time its the Grand Bretagne!
There in mid-March
from HaveOxygen
I was there mid-March and thought it was great. If you are not used to traveling in Europe, then the smoking is a real shock. I am pretty sure Greece does not have any restrictions.
Our group stayed there two nights, went on a cruise, and then returned for another night. Both times I had a great view of the Acropolis. Bathrooms were large. Rooms were not much different than what you get in Manhattan. Decorated nicely. Clean.
There are some great local restaurants not far from the hotel. The plaka is not far. There is a grocery across the street. Great location.
Breakfast buffet was really good. Best included buffet I have had at a hotel.
Definitely recommend this place!

This hotel was absolutely the worst hotel I have ever stayed in my life. Words can not describe how horrible it was. We stayed in Athens for the last two days of our honeymoon, after spending a week in Santorini and a week in Mykonos.
I cried upon entering the hotel and smelling the lobby. Our room was smokey, and we had to change rooms. We did not have a good view of the acropolis as promised, we instead had a view of a local husband on his balcony in his underwear.
The hotel rooftop restaurant was good, and we had a wonderful meal with the acropolis in the distance. Truly romantic. I recommend staying somewhere else and going to the rooftop restaurant.
The worst travel experience of my life. I can't imagine that anyone would have anything good to say about the rooms. And the staff was amazingly rude!

Perfect location

I have recently returned from a stay at theDivaniAcropolis hotel in
Athens. Everything was above reproach. The location
is perfect for walking to the acropolis, Plaka, Hadrian's gate and many other sites. The service at
the desk was exceptional, even managed to teach me
a few Greek phrases. There is a mailbox right around
the corner of the desk which is very handy. The buffet breakfast was fabulous. We were there in March
which was not "sit on your balcony" weather but we did
manage to spend time looking at the acropolis from there. There is a grocery store and many tabernas
very close by. We loved it.

Great view of the Acropolis
from buzzby
The Divani Palace is in a fairly unattractive, quiet residential area. It is a 3 block uphill (steep) walk to the acropolis pedestrian promendade and only a short walk from there to the Plaka area so the location has some advantages. The rooms are very small but functunial with comfortable beds and decent amenities. The breakfast buffet was very good with fresh fruit, breads, pastries, yogurt as well as the usual eggs and bacon. The staff were very freindly and helpful with making dinner reservations, taxis, etc. I would not rate this a five star hotel...perhaps 4* would be more accurate.
good option

my wife and i stayed at this hotel after the hotel we were originally booked in was overbooked and we were placed in this hotel.they first put us in a room with 2 single beds which we used for one night and then requested a room with a double bed which they provided for the next 2 nights.
the bathroom was great, spacious, good shower and tub, clean and everything worked. 2 thumbs up.
the buffet breakfast was outstanding.
the room itself was on the small side but had a balcony. not luxurious but adequate.
the service at the reception was ok, kind of abrupt, i gather this is typical for greece. they did give us a boxed breakfast and a thermos of coffee as we had to check out early in the am, and we were thrilled by this.
location is a couple of blocks from the acropolis. there are no shops in the immediate vicinity, but the plaka is about a 10 minutes walk away.

Good Quality Base for seeing Athens
from mdz
I have very few complaints about this hotel. The location is great, service is perfect. We did not eat at the restaurants at the hotel as we heard they were overpriced. The view from the street side rooms are great. The rooms are clean, the shower is nice and powerful, and the water stays hot. The few complaints that I have...the beds are really hard, the elevator small, and the rates are too high unless you manage to get a really good internet deal like we did. If I was in Athens again, I would stay at this hotel.
great hotel for seeing the Acropolis!
from TravelGirlNY77
My boyfriend and I stayed at the Divani Palace Hotel in mid-September of 2005 and highly recommend it to anyone staying in Athens. It is very well-located in a quiet neighborhood at the bottom of the Acropolis (it’s about a 5 minute walk). The hotel is clean, the staff is helpful, and the rooms have nice little balconies. This is not a luxury hotel, but is the equivalent of a nice Marriot in the U.S. and serves its purpose of being a convenient, nice place to stay at while visiting Athens.
Great Location in Athens
from monarchtravel
Great location with a short walk to the Acropolis as well as to The Plaka. Be sure to ask for a room with a view. We did not and had a view of the apartment building next door while other members of our group had a view of the Acropolis. I disagree with the previous reviewer about the staff. They proved to be very friendly and helpful to us. The front desk recommended to us a wonderful restaurant a short walk from the hotel which had a better view and much better menu at a less expensive price then the hotel's own restaurant. Rooms are a good size and the pool area is a lovely place to cool off at after a hot day of touring. The breakfast which was included with our room was wonderful with a great selection. Be prepared for lots of large tour groups who use this hotel. We noticed that when they were checking in it became quite busy and franctic in the lobby. Other than that it was not a problem. I would stay here again.
Top Local Tips for Athens
National Museum Treat yourself to a day in the Mational Museum. A No.5 or 15 bus will drop you just outside. Amazing!
July Too Hot In Athens If possible try to plan any trip to Athens in Spring , ideally ( April, May early June) or later in the year (September, October) . Avoid July as the heat is intense and unless you like crowds, heat, dust and car fumes Athens can be very uncomfortable, especially for sight seeing.
Buying water Go to a grocery store for water bottles, snacks, and even olive oil to take home. Prices are much less than the souvenier shops.
