Top Local Tips for Athens

A good time to go Take a trip in February or March. Weather is good, not too hot and there are less people about.

Athens has great food! Eat at Acropol Restaurant in Plaka. The moussaka is amazing, the stuffed grape leaves are fantastic, and they gave us free dessert and free wine each time we ate there! Also, the Taverna Tou Psiri in Psiri is great, homemade food. The lamb was absolutely delicious. These were two of our favorite restaurants in Athens. Il Parmigiano is an Italian restaurant in the neighbrohood of Kolonaki. The food was very good, but the tiramisu was beyond belief. Best tiramisu I've ever had. Have fun eating in Athens!

Getting around Find a hotel close to the metro. Catching the train from the Airport to Omonia Square is only 5 Eu, versus 38 for a taxi. Can catch the metro from Omonia Square to all of the sights, abot 0.70 - 0.80 Eu per ticket, depending on how many zones you'll hit.. See the Acropolis early in the morning, otherwise, during the summer you'll definitely get overheated, plus have to wait in long lines, and ABSOLUTELY, carry some water, don't hit the juice bar down at the exit, it'll cost you 5 Eu for a cup of lemonade. Walk down to any newspaper kiosk and a bottle of water will be around 0.50 Eu. If visiting a museum, don't try to take a picture of your spouse next to an artifact, the museum guards will shout at you and ask to see the picture, then you'll need to delet it. One way to get around it (didn't think about it at the time) take a picture of your spouse without the artifact, then a picture of the artifact, then merge on your computer.And, for sure, wear comfortable shoes.
