Top Local Tips for Athens

Bitterly Disappointed The whole city, apart from archaeological sites is a dump; dirty & decayed. Streets awash with graffiti, beggars and hawkers at every turn and locals are rude. Traffic is crazy and the drivers inconsiderate of pedestrians. On train to Piraeus around Falliro saw gypsies living in rubbish tips, in worse conditions than in Thailand or Malaysia. If you are staying around Omonia junkies passed out on pavement stoned to their eyeballs is everyday sight. Prostitutes, hawkers and all manner of miscreants roam the area 24-7. The police sit around on their motorcycles and do nothing. Miserable and depressing place. Only good point about the city itself is the metro and trams, which are clean, cheap, efficient and a pleasure to use. Best to stay away from Athens and concentrate on the islands, which are great. Take an overnight boat to Piraeus, see Acropolis and Lycabyttos in one day and be out of there pronto. No reason to hang around for more. It is not Amsterdam or San Francisco, where walking is a pleasure and the place is clean. Athenians seem to take no pride in their city, and do not really deserve you there.

Outdoor cinema You can watch a movie, turn around and see the Acropolis, beautifully lit at night. We went to the Cine Paris in Plaka district and watched Indiano Jones.. it was amazing, the place is really nice. It a cinema in a roof terrace with chairs and small tables, there's a bar where you can buy drinks and snacks. Price is 8 euros per person and the cinema is located on a main street in Plaka. A couple of blocks away there's a little square qith nice restaurants if you want to have dinner in a more secluded space and 1 block from the cinema there's a trendy bar called Brettos that you'll find on most tourist guides.
