Top Local Tips for Athens

Take metro from airport! It's easy! Don't waste money and take a cab to the hotel like I did upon arrival. Hop on the metro at the airport (Blue line). You can buy the 6 or 7 euro ticket at the ticket window in the airport and get off at the Megaro Moussakis stop. Walk just about 3 blocks to the hotel (past the US Embassy). It's quicker and much cheaper than taking a taxi. All instructions are in English in addition to Greek so it's very easy to follow.

Athens Beaches are Beautiful and Close! Don’t forget how close Athens beaches are – you can catch the tram for 60 cents from Syntagma, 24 hours a day, and be at beautiful beaches in 15 minutes! Some of the beaches are private and those closest to Athens can be expensive – up to 10 euro in the weekend per person, but during the week the public beaches are not too crowded.

Parthenon, Acropolis etc When you buy a ticket into the Parthenon/Acropolis (which, by the way, is amazing), you get tickets to several other sites in Athens. So, hang on to the tickets because they let you into the other sites (even on the following day(s)). And do go see them all. You definitely need at least a full two days of walking around in Athens. Wear good shoes! The sites are slippery, and you will walk a lot. Bring lots of water, wear sunscreen. But most of all, plan to spend a lot of time on your feet reading and learning. It's amazing. There is so much to see and learn. If you have time, I also recommend a one or two day trip (there are arranged tours you can do - the hotel will set them up for you) to Delphi. ALSO: Don't believe all the negative things some people say about Athens. Everyone had told us it was a dirty, awful place. We loved it. It's very much a European city, so if you like cities, and you like the European feel, you'll like it. And the people aren't pretentious. Nice.
