Disappointed

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in December so that we could visit the Rock and do a day trip to Tangiers. I read the reviews on Trip Advisor and they seemed great. We had two rooms for us and our children. The beds were awful! The sheets were not clean and were very thin. The sheets were so gray and worn that they looked like they should have been thrown out years ago. My daughter's bed had a thin sheet over her mattress with no mattress pad underneath- the sheet was so thin, you could see the mattress! The front desk people were also not very friendly or helpful when it came to restaraunt suggestions. We were given rooms that were lower down (even though the hotel didn't seem the least bit crowded) so we had an awful view of the rooftops of some ugly buildings. Not what you see from the pictures on Trip Advisor. This is not what you expect for a four star hotel and the amount we paid. We are expats living in Europe and have traveled all over the place- have stayed in all kinds of places- and this far has been one of the most disappointing!

I have just got back from 4 days at the Eliot with a group of 7 friends.

An excellent Hotel, superb modern rooms, one of the best buffet breakfasts I can remember at a Hotel, great Location.

The food and wine in the restaurant was fantastic, especially the Sea Bass.

We stayed at the Eliott Hotel Gibraltar at the beginning of June. It really is a lovely hotel in a great location – in the centre of town near to shops, pubs, restaurants etc. In spite of being so near to the busy main street, it is surprisingly quiet.

The breakfast was excellent and the evening meal perhaps a bit pricey but no problem – there are nice, reasonably priced restaurants close at hand in Casemates Square. I believe the hotel has recently been refurbished and they have certainly made an excellent job of it.

A tip though for would be visitors to Gibraltar – we were there over a weekend and practically everywhere closes at 2pm on a Saturday and doesn’t re-open until Monday morning so go to Gibraltar mid-week !.

We would certainly stay at the Eliott again.

Just got back from Gibraltar stayed at the Elliot Hotel. Was very impressed the room was ready when we arrived which was about 11am. We unpacked and went to the pool area which was quiet. We never had any problems getting a sunbed. The breakfast was buffet style and excellent could not fault the service and the bar area downstairs serves fantastic food. They gave out free tapas when the football was on in the bar area a very nice gesture.

A great hotel - staff friendly, efficient and helpful. The rooms we had were a good size, nice quiet a/c, excellent shower and bathroom and nice comfy spacious beds.

The "extra's" weren't over the top (coffee's, drinks, snacks) and while you sometimes had to scout out for a waiter/bar staff, they were courteous and helpful when you found one (may have been a shortage of staff because not in peak season).

Wouldn't hesitate to stay there again - location the best on the Rock, and everywhere was spotless.

Good, non-flashy hotel

Great location, stunning roof-top pool, breakfast served in pool-side restaurant overlooking the sea. Rooms very 'corporate' and characterless but large and spotlessly clean. Nice shaded bar terrace downstairs.

Any gripes? No mini bar in the rooms which would have been good if only to have some chilled water available during the night without calling room service! Also check-in took forever even though there were only 3 of us.

However, would definitely stay there again. Glad we didn't stay at The Rock once we saw the steep hill that leads up to it!

Excellent hotel! The room was large, comfortable and spotlessly clean and kept that way throughout our stay. Great breakfast and dinner. Also very good bar "snacks" - some snack they were huge! The staff were very polite and helpful. Could not fault it.

First Class Elliot

Stayed at The Elliot, Gibraltar for my 40+ birthday weekend 20/1/06. After reading reviews was a little worried about the renovations, but needn't have bothered! Everything has now been completed to a very high standard and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Situated just around the corner from the start of Main Street could not have wished for a better position, so no hire car needed. (so glad as the streets are so narrow would not have driven anyway!!) Breakfast is taken on top floor restaurant with breathtaking views over the Straits, with the Swimming Pool and sunbathing area above. Really pleased we decided to stick with our original plans to stay at this lovely Hotel, a little pricey but well worth it!!

Just returned from the Eliott and, after reading reviews, we were worried what we would find. It was pretty good! Refurbishment is still progressing on the 3rd floor but our room, 503, was newly done and fine. We were room only and breakfast is £13 so we didn't try it, nor dinner. The pool is cool but clean and pleasant, the pool bar closes this weekend for the winter.

For good food don't just look in the main street and 'Casemates' but try the Queensway Quay marina and Marina bay.

We stayed at the Eliott for 4 nights from 13 Sept 05 and cost £484 total for B&B. VERY convenient location, just off Main Street. Still undergoing renovations but building work didn't impact negatively (working on the 3rd floor at present and looks like they will soon be finished altogether) - a trifle noisy during the day but we were out most of the time anyway so couldn't care less - we were on the 5th floor.

Checked in by very polite and chatty young man, got a non smokers room as requested. Room excellent - very spacious. Yes, it was a bit like a 'travel lodge' in design/style but much larger and more 'substantial' furnishings, queen size bed etc. Great bathroom, well stocked. If you've forgotton razor/toothbrush/comb etc hotel will bring it up for you, all the usual shower gel etc already there and replenished daily. Everything VERY clean and bedding/towels completely fresh (I'm extremely fussy).

Tea/coffee facilities in room, even get a little teapot. All well stocked.

Breakfast catered pretty well (full 'english' plus rolls/meat, pastries, cereal - something for everyone) although dining room quite small. Staff there might be considered slightly offhand I suppose, don't get the usual pleasantries (but not rude), but they were quite busy most mornings. Didn't eat in the hotel at all apart from mornings so can't comment on other food there or the cost of it. Bar staff friendly although only drank there 1 evening. Afraid we don't usually go away to hang about inside the hotel.

I can't find fault with this hotel at all and from my experience I would highly recommend it, having read previous reviews before we went I was a bit concerned but I'd have to say we didn't experience any problems whatsoever and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. Needed a late checkout and the hotel happily obliged till 4pm then they stored our luggage for a further 2 hours.

The Eliott was by far a better location than The Rock, met some guests from there who said it is a bit on the shabby side - "seen better days" to be precise and they were paying £160 per night!

Top Local Tips for Gibraltar

Buses There are four little buses numbered 1 to 4 who travel circular routes round town, the frontier (which is also the airport) Rosia which is out towards the dry docks and Both Worlds which is a holiday centre round the other side of Gib, beyond the Caleta hotel. At 60p they are a great way of getting about and i'm sure they will sell rover tickets although we didn't get one. Maps are shown in all the bus stops and they are easy to get the hang of.

Transport Use the local buses to get to your hotel - no taxis in sight and a long queue when we arrived. Buses cheap and efficient.

Duty free It seemed that the Indian shops in the town sold their alcohol cheaper than the Airport.The Spanish come across the border to fill up with petrol , Cigs and Booze !!
