If it's beer you're after, you couldn't do any better than this tidy, atmospheric hotel in central Munich. You could literally fall out of the Haufbrau Haus into the Platzl. Not bad after downing a couple of their mega-draughts.
It's also close to a lot of great shopping, eateries and sights of old Munich.
The rooms are clean, but a little dark and why don't Europeans like queen beds? The bathrooms are also clean, but a little dated. The whole place is in good shape, but just needs some updating.
Breakfast was good with lots of sausage to combat the previous night's digressions.
It's not cheap, but that keeps out the real loud, cheap drunks who puke and whiz in the streets.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Platzl Hotel

Great Location, Rest is Passable

from Meowy
I stood at the Platzl for three nights for the World Cup. The only real positive for the hotel is its location. It is right on Marienplatz, but enough off of the main street so that the noise and hussle and bussle don't disturb you. Besides its location the rest was problem after problem.

I originally booked via Expedia three months in advance. When I arrived at the hotel I was told that I did not have reservations. After checking and double checking they found that I was booked under a completely different name. Don't know whether to blame the hotel or expedia.

The rooms are a decent size but lacks air conditioning. I had to swelter in the top floor attic room during one of the hottest summers on record. Luckily I went into town and bought an electric fan.

The hotel does in fact perform currency exchange, as the website lists, but not before chastizing you that there are other places that this can be done. After I convinced them to exchange my money they told me that they can only exchange upwards of 100 euros.

Upon checking out they would not let me pay by credit card, only cash!

There are probably better hotels out there, stay somewhere else and avoid the rather rude staff.

Fantastic!!!

During our visit to Germany in February 2006, my husband and I stayed at this lovely hotel twice. Our room was very clean, comfortable and quiet. For a European hotel, I found the room size to be quite spacious, including the bathroom. The breakfast buffet is out of this world. You will be spoiled by all of the good wurst, hearty breads, fresh fruits, cheeses, variety of cereals and yogurt. After a long flight, the spa is just what one needs to rejuvenate the body. The hotel’s location is ideal. The hotel is a block and a half from the Marienplatz and next door to the Hofbrauhaus. The staff is knowledgeable of the city, multi-lingual and very friendly.

On our return to the hotel from Austria for the second leg of our stay, I came down with food poisoning. Needless to say, I needed to check into our room fast. The desk clerk took one look at me as I approached the front desk and handed me the key to our room while my husband checked us in. He remembered us from our earlier stay. Several of the employees asked my husband if there was anything I needed or if he would like for them to call for a doctor for me.

We will definitely stay at the Platzl Hotel whenever we are in Munich.

Great location - needs some updating

from Scrapegypt
We stayed 4 nights and had 2 rooms - one for us and one for our young teens. This was not my first choice (because of the price), but the other hotels I wanted were closed for the Christmas/New Year week.

I agree that the breakfast is spectacular - a variety of meats, cheeses, cereals, fruits, juices, breads - plus scrambled eggs, bacon, and sausages. You could also request waffles. Quite a treat.

However, when I made my reservation I had specifically requested non-smoking rooms since my younger son is allergic to smoke. Upon arrival, we were offered one non-smoking and one smoking room. This would have been fine, but the rooms were quite a distance away - which was not acceptable to us. The only way we could get 2 rooms close together was to take 2 smoking rooms. Fortunately, there was no smoky smell and since they faced the courtyard - they were quiet.

The rooms were small (well, average for Europe) and I felt the furnishings were rather worn and dated. I understand the hotel will be undergoing some renovations in 2006 and that is definitely needed.

With the exception of the room request snafu, I did find the front desk staff to be quite helpful - calling cabs, checking on airport transfers, recommending restaurants, and even finding us an English showing of Harry Potter.

The best thing about the Platzl is the location - right in the heart of town and easy walking to restaurants, shopping, and many sites. We easily walked to the Science and Technology Museum - even in the snow.

Would I stay here again? Probably not, because I felt the rooms were overpriced (especially since we need 2 rooms). But - if price is not a determining factor, you can't beat the location.

Amazing

This hotel was more then I expected. I would say that it was way better then any place I've stayed at. The hotel staff are very helpful and friendly. The complimentery breakfast will suprise you. No old donuts and coffee, nothing but a first class spread. The hotel is in the best location to everything. I will stay here everytime I visit.

Unbeatable Location!

from Jemimagold
We recently stayed here the weekend of Nov. 25-27 during our annual trip to Munich to visit their Christmas Market. This was our first time to stay at the Platzl.

Pros: 1. It is in a wonderful location - 1 block from the Hofbrauhaus and otherwise extremely close to Marienplatz which seems to be the center of town- at least during Christmas Market time. The Marienplatz Subway stop is likewise convenient to get to by foot. 2. Breakfast is an enormous and lavish buffet with everything imaginable (including champagne) and is included in the room price. 3. The hotel has a charming Bavarian atmosphere.

Cons: 1. As others have noted in previous reviews, the front desk service is a bit sketchy. They repeatedly gave friends of ours the wrong information that we had already checked in when in fact we had not which led to our friends sitting around the lobby for about an hour for no reason. 2. They will give you whatever room they feel like - REGARDLESS of what is shown on your booking confirmation. We had reserved a King Sized bed but were given 2 twin beds on opposite sides of the room. The person posing as the Manager (he was all of 20 - I don't really believe he was the Manager) said that that was the only room they had left. To credit their though - the last night we were there, they called our room at 10 pm and offered to let us come down to the Bar and have 2 free cocktails on them. As we had an early flight to catch, we did not take them up on it. It would have been better had they offered us the cocktail on the day we checked in which is when all the problems occurred - I attribute this to the inexperience of the staff.

The soul of Munich!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Yes, there are indeed some small rooms here, and some of them can indeed be noisy, especially those overlooking a construction site. But with prior planning, you can easily book yourself into a superior, quieter room.

In fact, our room (#422) contained a small sitting area and glimpses of the rooftops of Munich. It was quiet and filled with charm. Perhaps some of the charm resulted from our having booked Platzl's Champagne Weekend package for a superior room (€50 more). As soon as we checked in, we were given our transportation/museum pass and a warm welcome. At 4:00p.m., our room was ready and had flowers and a bottle of Champagne chilling in a bucket.

Our package also untitled us to a regional menu at the hotel's Pfistermuhle. Excellent local fish was available but the server would be more than happy to provide a substitution for the hungry carnivores. Dessert was a sampling of the chef's creations, from sorbets, fresh fruit, to tarts. Drinks are extra.

But it is the breakfast for which the Platzl is reknown. You can (and should) order waffles with strawberries and the large white (veal) sausages with mustard. Of course, the buffet table contains all the requisite fruits, cheeses, meats, fish, breads for which Germany is so justifiably famous.
The coffee is provided by Dallmyer, the food emporium of the rich and famous.

I have read some negative reviews about service, and certainly I would have to agree that information is not always available. For instance, we wanted to know about the Buga (flower/ecology) festival that was taking place in the suburbs. No one at the desk seemed to know too much about it. But I have the feeling that the Platzl is like a training ground for hotel employees, because I have never seen the same staff during the eight visits we've made here. But someone definitely is behind the scenes, because for the past four years I've received a birthday card signed by whatever staff is currently behind the scenes. It is nice to be remembered.

Think Twice

from TimothyJNoel
I found the prior reviews to be quite different from what I experienced at the Platzl Hotel. Perhaps because of the Christmas Market Season the hotel was over-taxed but that is no excuse for poor customer service.

Let me start with the good: Great location and nice breakfast.

After that, the Platzl is a hotel that is in need of a remodel. Security on the room doors is very poor and there are no room safes. The two elevators are over worked. Waits for the elevators can be long and bellmen expect priority boarding when taking luggage to a room. The front desk staff is adequate yet not exactly warm or accommodating. This is not a business hotel. This hotel screams tourist class with the tourist groups milling about to prove it. Bavarian elegance exists in a Disneyland sense. There is nothing romantic or chic about this Germanic hotel. I will concede there might be nicer rooms but I wouldn't know. My wife and I had two single beds that would make Lucy and Ricky Ricardo feel right at home. That was not what we booked.

There are a number of better hotels in much quieter locations. The Hofbrauhaus and the construction project across the street can certainly arouse a light sleeper.

I will not return to the Platzl, yet I cannot help but to reflect on the previous reviews. They made me want to stay there. Now I find myself thinking, Damn I paid all of that for this?

Alas, we never needed a wake-up call! Our maid walked into our room twice while we were sleeping. Something is not right about that!

Very nice hotel

from CPPDenver
We stayed here for four nights during Oktoberfest Sept 2004. While we stayed here, extensive construction took place in what previously was the adjacant square and the noise began at 7am. Other than this inconvience, which was minimized by double glazed windows which eliminated much of the noise, we enjoyed the hotel. The staff were very friendly, spoke good English, and were helpful with maps and directions. The breakfast buffet was our best during our eight night stay in Bavaria (try the white German sausages for Breakfast). The location of the hotel is outstanding to Marienplatz, the Hofbrauhaus and other old city spots. It is a bit of a distance from Oktoberfest itself, but easily accessable by the subway. I would stay here again when the construction is over.

A Bavarian Delight

from Frbill92
I had the opportunity to spend almost a week at the Platzl Hotel. It is located about a block from the main square--Marianplatz. What an ideal location for branching out to all areas of Munich. I especially appreciated the convenient location of the subway stop that is located a block from the hotel. It made it convenient for getting to the airport since this is station is one of the stops for the airport train. The cost for the train from the Marianplatz to the airport was only about 10 euro compared to almost 75 euro for a taxi. I found the hotel bar very accomadating. The staff was always friendly and welcoming. The breakfast buffet was delicious, but during peak breakfast times there was quite a wait for a clean table. The room was clean and welcoming. It was a very comfortable hotel in the heart of all the action of Munich. I definitely would return there again and highly recommend it.

Hotel - nice looking , Service - poor, Noise level - Horrible!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Nice looking hotel, however rooms are very small and overpriced. Did not receive the room that I origonally booked and paid for. Was travelling throughout Germany for business and did not get to sleep until after 3am due to the noise level outside my window. Then was woken up at 6am by the incredibly loud demolition/construction project next door - Which by the way they failed to mention anywhere on the website or when booking the hotel! (Project will continue for 2 more years) To top it all off, when I asked to change to a quieter room I was flat out denied by the front desk personnel and wasn't even given a reason.
I travel throughout Germany often and will never stay at this hotel again.

Top Local Tips for Munich

Shopping Excellent choice and great value. Munich is the New York of Europe. maximillianstrasse is well worth the visit, the prices are HUGE

Trains to airport You can take the S1 or S8 from Marienplatz (nearest to hotel) to the airport. A colleague in the office advised me to take the S8 rather than the S1, as apparently only part of the S1 goes to the airport. The other part breaks off halfway there leaving you liable to ending up in the wrong place unless you know what you're doing! The S8 goes straight there as a final destination, so you can't go wrong.
