Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Torbrau

Charming but cramped

from trellis2
The Torbrau is a very old Hotel, very close to the City Centre. For two days in July it was a good base for exploring the City.

Car parking on a quiet street next to the Hotel, visible from reception seemed very secure. The rooms were ok but not fitted to the highest standards - shower only rather than bath, for example. The lift (singular) was tiny and very slow - without suitcases it was quicker to walk up 4 storeys than to wait.

Breakfast was fine - generous and wide choice. The staff seemed very keen to please, if a little unctuous.

Great location

from jwsmd3
Being a pair of older buildings there is much variability to size and layout of rooms. When we commented how small our room was (like cruise ship small !!! ) we were quickly moved to one twice the size, with two sinks and tub and told we should've asked for a "double" and not a "twin" ?!?!?!? It was a dramatic difference that would have changed my overall perception. On the side street 3rd floor there was no perception of noise.

It was in the 80's during my stay and the A/C worked fine though it wouldn't accept a temp below 18 degrees C. It did go well over 90 the day after we left.

Included breakfast was very good, smokers and nonsmokers separated and on our second day, with better weather, sitting outside on the balcony was a treat

The location can't be beat especially since the Isartor S-Bahn station is right outside (use the Im Tal exit completely opposite end from Deutchmuseum).

I never found it til after the fact: website is (---) !!!!

Good location, air conditioning does not work!

from Trip Advisor from Dallas, TX
We have just returned from a 2 night stay at Hotel Torbrau in Munich. We chose this hotel because of its location & because it had air conditioning since we were traveling in July. The location is great. IF AIR CONDITIONING IS IMPORTANT TO YOU, PICK ANOTHER HOTEL. We had 2 connecting rooms (we were traveling with our 2 children), the a/c vent blew warm air in one room & cool in the other room. However, neither rooms were ever cool. After a hot first night, we informed the management that the a/c was not working. We were told it would be fixed during the day. When we returned at the end of the day, it had not been fixed. We asked to move to another room but were told there were no connecting rooms for us to move to. The manager then "fixed" the a/c & it did work for a few hours & then quit working again during the night.

After 2 hot, sleepless nights, the management never offered any form of compensation for the 2 hot nights that we spent in their hotel.

We will not be recommending this hotel or staying here again.

Great Location!

from AroundtheWorld
Hotel Torbrau is in a perfect location. It is easy to get to from both the train station and the airport. Hotel Torbrau is in a shopping street but still quiet....and fun for people-watching from the hotel's Italian dining venue. "La Famiglia." Best of all, the hotel is within walking distance of the Marienplatz and the famous Glockenspiel. The room was on the smallish side...but clean.....and the breakfast was huge and well-nigh amazing!
I would stay here again whenever visiting Munich in the future.

Great break at the Torbrau

from winnieacre
We stayed three nights at the Torbrau and would recommend the hotel which is very central. Breakfast is excellent with everything from sparkling wine and strawberries, cheese, meats, breads as well as hot bacon and eggs. Rooms are small but adequate and we had a non-smoking room at the rear which was very quiet. Staff at the front desk were helpful, friendly and experienced.

Great Hotel,Location and Excellent Service

Worth every penny. Can't beat the price, accomodations, location and especially the service! Enjoy.

Disappointing experience at the Torbrau

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Hotel Torbrau in late March. The reason we selected the Torbrau was because of the many nice reviews we had read on the Trip Advisor site. True to the reviews, the location was great and the hotel itself was clean and nice. However, the service staff at the front desk were less than accommodating. We had booked three rooms and were planning to stay two nights. However, a family emergency forced us to check out after the first night. I informed the front desk staff of our situation and they told me we would be charged (over 500 euros) for the second night regardless of whether we stayed or not. I pleaded with the front desk staff and was met with little more than a shurg and sorry, we can't help you. Finally, I spoke with the assistant manager, who was even less helpful than the front desk personnel. He went on and on about hotel policy and they were a family run operation that couldn't waiver from policy. Absolutely no compassion for our family emergency and unwilling to work with us in any way. Most disappointing, however, was the lack of appreciation shown to us as guests of their hotel. After one night we had spend nearly $1,000 on food (we ate in the hotel restaurant) and lodging. We were treated as if we hadn't spent a dime with them. We checked out and sure enough, when I got my American Express bill a month later we were charged for the second night. We will be coming back to Munich, however, we won't be coming back to the Hotel Torbrau.

Torbrau Excellence!

from SCSpud
On a suggestion of a friend, we had the opportunity to stay at the Torbrau Hotel this past February. The management and staff were exceptionally helpful and extremely friendly. The room was delightful in that we had a wonderful view of the Munich skyline and it was immaculately clean. A fabulous breakfast awaited each morning and a truly lovely Italian cafe on site as well. The location is terrific just blocks away from Marienplaz and the S-Bahn is right outside the door.

I would highly recommend this hotel.

#1 Location!

from Pir8guy
We just stayed at the Torbrau for Oktoberfest, and like everything else we experienced in Munich, the Torbrau was beautiful, efficient and well-run.
The hotel is in a perfect place, just a couple of blocks from Marienplatz. The staff was very patient and friendly (can you imagine how many times they gave directions to Oktoberfest??). The room was quite large for a historic hotel, and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was spotless. (NOTE: This hotel DOES have A/C and it worked well).
The breakfast was outstanding and there is a nice cafe just out the front.
Overall, an excellent experience!!!

I stayed at the Torbraeu for two weekend nights in September 2004 and recommend it. It is located very close to an S-Bahn station (very convenient for those taking the train from their airport) and in a quiet neighborhood (relatively speaking, of course, since it is a downtown hotel). All major sites are a convenient walk away, even on days as rainy as mine were during my stay. Light (and jetlagged) sleepers beware: at least two local churches toll the hours. All. Night. Long. It’s something you’ll have to deal with in any hotel in the area.

My single room was as small as I expected for the price paid, but extremely clean. It was a non-smoking room that I was pleased to find did not in fact smell like it had been smoked in. There was a thermostat, so I’m assuming the room could be air conditioned. But the weather was so mild during my stay that I didn’t need to use it. The staff spoke English and were universally friendly, always greeting guests with a mild “Gruess Gott.” Breakfast was fresh bread, fresh fruit, cheese and cold cuts.

Something that was not mentioned in info I’ve read on the hotel – wireless internet access was available in the public “meeting room” adjacent to the lobby. You need to ask the reception clerk to “turn it on,” otherwise you only connect to the access point can’t get but out to the Net. The price for it was steep, however – three euros for 15 minutes. I later found two internet cafes on Im Tal that charged 2.50 euros per hour. The hotel also has a business center with wired internet access.
