Top Local Tips for Munich

Tram Route 17 This tram runs right in front of this hotel and extends all the way to the other side of Munich, normally. There is however a break in the line at Isartor. If you read German you may discover this in advance but otherwise will just find yourself at a temporary "end of the line" and will have to punt. We didn't really understand what was happening until we had ridden the line both directions and found the gap in service.

Art Galleries You should not miss the three major art galleries in Munich. If you had to choose one out of the three, you can see amazing old masters, Breughels, Rubens, Tintoretto etc at the Altes Pinakothek. The other two are equally good if you have more contemporary tastes.

A few special tips Be sure to visit the Viktualienmarkt, the outdoor market, and walk around to see the variety of foods. Sample some of the freshly made juices and have a Weisswurst or Bratwurst at the beer garden near the northern end of the market. Early in the morning, go to the Schmalznudel (across from the Schrannehalle) and drink a coffee and order the local version of a doughnut, which is made just seconds before it appears on your plate. Then, stroll back up to the Rathaus. Keep going on the street heading north--the Rathaus will be on your left and Ludwig Beck's department store on your right-- until you come to Dallmayrs, a delicatessen in the true sense of the word. Then tell me German food's not great!
