Top Local Tips for Hamburg
harbor cruises Although city occupants don't seem to buy tickets for the subway, you do need one in case you are asked for it and the fines are quite steep. There are no stiles to pass thru like in London/D.C./New York so you don't need a ticket to pass thru and it's very fast to get on and off. A one day or longer pass allows you to jump on and off a very fast and convenient system. We also learned on a bus tour that one of the trains going to the harbor has a great view of the harborfront and river and you can use your pass to travel along the river to the Fish Market or other stops where there are shorefront walks and cafes. There were a number of couples taking a romantic cruise along the riverfront in the evening, especially if the weather is nice. The other side of the river is a working port but there is something otherwordly about seeing it all lit at night.
Hamburg Card. Isestrasse market. Buy a Hamburg Card for getting around. You can get them to cover different time spans & numbers of people. The tourist office @ Hauptbahnhof will help with which is best for you. If you by a day pass it covers from 18.00 the night before. The train system is excellent & efficient. For a shopping experience with a difference take the Ubahn U1 to Klosterstern or U3 to Hoheluftbrucke or Eppendorfer Baum on Tuesday or Friday morning & walk along the market under the railway (doesn't even matter if it's raining. You'll be amazed @ the breads, meats, fruit, veg, fish & above all the variety of salads, etc.
Airport into the City of Hamburg At the moment, the airport doesn't have any connecting rail services. The only way into the City has to include an element of ground transportation. The choices are: Taxi, Airport Express bus which drops at the Hauptbahnhof only, or a transfer bus to the nearest U-Bahn station in Ohlsdorf. Either way, the journey time into the City is quite qick, and can sometimes be achieved in under 30mins (Traffic permitting).
