Top Local Tips for Berlin
Buy a 72 hour travel pass on arrival at the airport Berliners seemingly operate an 'honour sytem' when it comes to travelling on public transport so no-one ever checks your tickets. I'd recommend buying a tourist pass on arrival - we more than got our money out of this on the trains and trams.
although out of the way location, there is excellent tram network BUY A TICKET: stations, buses tubes & trams there are no manned ticket booths so you buy from machines & its really confusing so be really careful. There are 3 types of tickets a short journey which is for about 6 tram stops 3 underground or station stops you can buy this for zone A & B(central & outer Berlin & this is enough as airports are in zone C) for 1.30euro. Std ticket which lasts for 2 hours but you CANNOT use it to return this is excellent value at 2.40 euro or a Day ticket which lasts the whole day & costs about 6 euros. All tickets can be used on all services even some ferries to cross rivers in berlin. When you buy the ticket on the Tube or the stations you need to then validate them in the small boxes next to the ticket machines, this is a really good facility as if you are staying for a couple of days you can buy enough tickets for the duration and validate them each day. Its illegal to travel on any public transport without buying a ticket, 40euro each on the spot fine!
