We'd visited Villefranche before this stay and chose the Provencal this time around because of its quiet but central location and because it looked pleasantly old-fashioned. The staff were always friendly and helpful. We had a room in the tower, with plenty of light and a nice view. The furnishings and decor were a bit outdated, but it was clean and comfortable. I can't remember what we paid, but the rate included a buffet breakfast and we thought it was good value. This hotel would suit people who are usually happy with 2* hotels and value character more than amenities.

Top Local Tips for Villefranche Sur Mer

Best value is away from the water The seafood at La Fille de Peschere (sic) on the water was incredible (though pricey), but apart from this there did not seem to be much value (or at least value worth paying for). Had much more luck on the back streets, including Campenelle which was really homely and charming, and Le Creperie Escale (i.e. "the creperie on the stairs) for lunch or cheaper dinner (crepes, omelletes, salad and even excellent burgers)

Riviera home base. Stay and park in Villefranche for visit to Nice, Monaco, and other nearby locations on convenient, inexpensive public transportation. It is also a very convenient base for automobile day-trips with the pleasures of a smaller city on the Cote d'Azur that is not over crowded but still offers dining, beaches, and old world charm.
