Versailles Hotel Bargain
Although a little bit out of the way, the Mercure Versailles Chateau is worth an extra few blocks of searching. Still within walking distance of the Chateau, this clean and pleasant hotel is about 1/3 the price of the Sofitel. Granted, the rooms are fairly small, and they serve only a relatively expensive breakfast, but the staff is very friendly and accommodating. The hotel is only a few blocks from the main square, with its 3 X per week farmers market. This is actually a fairly large market and includes several large permanent buildings. There are several decent restaurants located around the periphery of the squre. Try Le Chien Qui Fumer for a great dinner.
