Convenient, calm and attractive

We visit Strasbourg often, trying out different hotels. The Sofitel has been one of the few "repeats". Convenient location combined with quiet, and well-maintained, attractive surroundings are what distinguish the Sofitel. Located on a small, quiet square, on the fringes of the main shopping and pedestrian zone, just a few minutes by foot from the main Strasbourg attractions, the Sofitel is an upscale hotel, which can often be booked on the Internet for very reasonable, discounted rates. For those arriving by car, there is convenient public parking in the square in front of the hotel. Valet parking is also offered. The tram stop (""Homme de Fer"") is less than 5 minutes away. Rooms are spacious and attractive, with the amenities one would expect in a 4-star establishment -- room safe, mini-bar, hair dryer, internet connectivity, and the like. Staff are friendly and helpful, and all speak English. Beds are comfortable. The restaurant serves Alsatian cooking at reasonable prices; and there are many other eating possibilities close at hand, ranging from fast food to brasseries to Chinese food. We have had nothing but good experiences here, and would recommend this hotel without reservation.

Trams in Strasbourg Strasbourg's tram system is pretty cheap, reliable and a great way to get around this rather tangled and confusing city. As of October 2008, a ticket valid for exactly 24 hours from first use for one person is 3.60 euro, or you can buy twelve single-journey tickets for 12 euro (single and return tickets are also available, but more expensive). Whichever ticket you buy, you have to validate it on a machine on the platform the first time you use it (and before your return journey for a return ticket as well). The ticket machines take only coins or certain special cards (which foreign visitors will almost certainly not have) so hoard those Euro coins. There is a shop in the basement of the main train station that sells the carnet of 12 tickets over the counter, though.
