Wonderful Stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
We truly enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The staff was absolutely wonderful...the best Paris has to offer! The rooms were very comfortable: clean, nicely decorated and had a great breakfast included. The hotel is in an excellent location as well. The staff went above and beyond! We definately recommend.

some major setbacks, but functional

from A TripAdvisor Member
this hotel is not optimal for pleasure travelers. check in was a bit problematic (it took 40 minutes) due to some confusion over my family's method of payment (pre-paid marriott gift cards). but the staff spoke good english and the hiccup was settled on good terms. while the location is only about a 3 minute walk from the la defense meto station, allow for 20-25 minutes to take the train into the city centre (hotel de ville, louvre, marais etc.). that said, its convenient to get to versailles via the suburban rail, which departs from la defense and gets you to versailles in about 30 mins. for whatever reason, the hotel staff was misinformed about a number of tourist activities. for instance, we were told that napoleon's tomb closed at 6 and planned on ending our day there. we arrived at 4:45 and it was closed. we were told that the restaurants atop montmartre would be opened til 12 am after a day out of the city, but when we arrived around 10, there was only one place open. other than that, the place is comfortable and functional, but lacks real parisian charm.

Great hotel --- the modern side of Paris

from rompingmermaid
I used points to stay here, and at the manager's reception, learned that this is the most requested hotel in the chain for using points. The hotel is at the far end of the metro line but only 10-15 minutes to most destinations, the location generally assures getting a seat instead of having to stand. Although the hotel food was mediocre at best (I had access to the concierge level lounge so the bulk of what I had was free), the access to fruit, beverages, and good coffee (perhaps the best I have had in the whole Marriott chain) was a plus. The room was large, quiet, and very comfortable. The staff was extremely helpful and pleasant. The grocery store and shopping center near the hotel was appreciated; the food on offer was at least as good as elsewhere in Paris (Paul bakery was nearly as good as the high end Poulaine, Pierre Herme, etc.) and the variety of produce, fish, cheese etc. was also great. The modern surrounding of La Defense were also a good balance to the more traditional central city locations.

t mind the metro

from A TripAdvisor Member
You will like the Renaissance La Defense if you like friendly, professional staff, a nice gym with sauna and jacuzzi, a good breakfast and fully equipped rooms at a rather reasonable price (by Paris standards).

You will not like the hotel if you want to stay in the city center with many attractions close by. La Defense is dead in the evenings and on the weekends. Literally dead. There is absolutely nothing. The good news is that it is less than a 5 minute walk to the metro and only a 10 minute ride to Champs-Elysees on the same metro line. Personally, I don't mind the short travel.

You will like the hotel, but maybe you want to stay in the city center. If you don't mind the metro, I recommend you stay at the Renaissance.

In my opinion the superior rooms are not really worth extra money. If you have a deep pocket, try one of the suites. Maybe you can get a good price.

t Waste Your Marriott Points on This Hotel

from PRR
Extremely disappointed in this hotel. This was our first stay at a Renaissance Hotel (Nov. 9-16,2004). We were guests for a week using points from my Marriott Rewards Account. The room was physically uncomfortable primarily due to the temperature. Although the weather outside for the week averaged a high of 50 F and a low of 35 F the room and the hotel was heated to 80 F or higher. The air conditionning was turned off and only the heating system worked. The window could barely be opened. Staff was pleasant but unable to resolve the problem. They did manage to unlock the window to allow it to be opened wide but this resulted in the keeping the room lit from the lights of the adjoing office towers. The heavy drapes could not close with the window open and if they could close would keep all the cold air out. The high temperature plus a bed that needed to be replaced (the matress was crowned so you could easily roll off the bed) resulted in a week of poor sleeping. We were asked if we wanted to change rooms but were never shown another room or obtained an answer to our question if the heating/cooling system problem would be resolved in the "new" room. Thus we opted to stay and avoid the trouble of repacking etc;. The staff promptly fixed the burnt out lights and the broken outlet in the hair dryer which was needed for an electric razor in our room. We have stayed in many hotels in Paris over the years. This was certainly the least comfortable. The size of the room was small as expected but poorly designed especially with respect to waste space, poor traffic flow and mirror placement for starters. The hot water in the hotel is too hot which creates a safety problem in the shower when, as was the case, the water valve in the shower sticks and it is impossible to make small incremental changes. This is an accident (scaling or a fall avoiding scalding) waiting to happen. The staff was friendly and helpful but they can not make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
We agree that the breakfast buffet was nice but way overpriced. Be forewarned that the whole area shuts up at night and on the weekend and it is very hard to find a place to eat or snack in the evening except in the hotel. The metro is about 300 yeards away and not a problem (end of line 1). If you had business in La Defense one might consider this hotel. If you were visiting Paris for mostly tourism it is a poor choice. Don't waste your Marriott point here.

Very Good Hotel

from jimtexas
Overall this is a very good hotel. The rooms are well appointed but a bit small and the bathroom is large by Paris standards. The staff is very helpful. The buffet breakfast is not worth the price.

The Metro is a close (not very close, but close) walk from the hotel.

This is very good American style hotel in Paris. Its away from the tourist spots and deep in the business area.

Great hotel!! Would stay there again!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed there in May 2004 and would highly recommend it. It's definitely off the beaten path, but we were only steps away from the Metro. We felt very safe walking back to our hotel at night.

The staff was friendly and accomodating. I mistakenly burned the comforter with the iron, and they were okay with that. They replaced the comforter and didn't charge us for the damages.

The staff was very willing to speak in English and make whatever reservations we wanted. They told us what areas to avoid by metro at night and the best tours to book.

All in all --- fabulous!

Great first trip to Paris!

My wife and I stayed here 5 days on our Marriot Pts and had a great time. Here are the highlights:

Location: Hotel is in the massive La Defense business park but this was actually an OK setting - huge pedestrian mall, modern sculptures, a merry-go-round, cinema complex, a shopping center and restarants all surrounded by ultra-modern buildings. It's a pleasant 5 minute walk past the Grande Arche to the No. 1 metro line making it very convenient to get to all of Central Paris sights (15 minutes to the Louvre/St. Michel/Marais, 20 minutes and one connection to Eiffel Tower, Montmartre, Montparse).

Hotel: Hotel seems new and is well appointed. The rooms and beds are very comfortable. Rooms are of average size (but probably spacious for Paris). Staff is very pleasant and helpful (all speak english very well).
The hotel's gym, hot tub and sauna were open 24 hours and were a great way to relax at the end of the day. Also, sleeping at night was very peaceful since the windows are very sound proof. If you are an elite member with Marriott, you'll get a great free breakfast and desserts/drinks all day at the concierge lounge.

Would definately recommend this hotel - especially given its price (or low pts redemption level). The non-central location was not inconvenient at all.

A great stay!

Only one night here -- and it was stunning! We stayed using all my Marriott points and were treated *very* well!

After a few days in an OK hotel in downtown Paris it was really worth the subway ride out to this fine hotel!

If (when) I return to Paris I will return to this hotel.

Oui! Oui! WE loved this hotel. sept 30-october 2,2004

What a great hotel!

My husband and I used Marriott points for our vacation to London and Paris. We arrived via the eurostar and then took a cab to our hotel. It cost around 40 euros.
We were so pleasantly surprised how beautiful the hotel was. Very nice lobby and nice bi-lingual people at the front desk. We were on the concierge floor just steps away from the concierge suite. Our hotel room was really big! And the bathroom was beautiful! A nice configured room with an exceptionally comfy bed.
Of course we went straight to the concierge suite. Oh yeah! They had great desserts, fruits, cheeses. And stocked with soda and water.
WE were so delighted. Their breakfasts were really good too!
The location is the last stop on the Metro. However, the Metro is so close and very safe to walk to and fro. The Metro is fast and easy to use too. Definitely get the pack of 10 ( a good deal). 10 rides for 10 euros, instead of paying 1.40 euros a piece. It takes about 15 minutes on the Metro to get to the heart of Paris. About 20 minutes to Notre Dame area. It runs till 12:30 a.m.
We would leave in the morning and come home around midnight. So, we really didn't need a hotel in the city.
You'll be glad to return to your comfy, very modern, clean hotel after a full day in Paris.
Have a great time.
And make sure you spend time in Ille saint Louis....
The restaurants are the best, great little stores, and go to the gelato store. Yeah, it's italian, but it's better than the other ice creams in the Ille saint louis area.

Top Local Tips for Paris La Defense

NO!!!!! Metro and RER are the EASIEST ways of getting around. Parking is a hassle, traffic is terrible, taxis are VERY expensive, plus the metro is much faster.

Don't blow your money on a tourist hotel The metro is a great way to get around, and costs only 10 Euro per day for unlimited metro and bus service. You can save much more than this on a hotel, especially on Priceline. If you stay in La Defense, you are only minutes away from the Eiffel Tower and all the other tourist attractions anyway. Trains and buses run every 5-10 minutes! With the money you save, you can eat in a nice restaurant in Chinatown (13th Arrondisement).

All is beautiful in Paris If it's not the first time you visit Paris and you have seen all major monuments and museums... walk in Belleville, following Pennac novels. It will be an amazing experience.
