Historical Traveller Reviews of Hilton Paris La Defense Hotel

Contemporary, clean, comfort

from lifeinpink
If you're looking for these three things, check check check--they've got it. Originally, I was not going to stay here, as I was looking for a more Parisian-style hotel in another area. However, due to work reasons, I was here for three nights and loved it.

The hotel is inside the CNIT (a dome-shaped business center at La Defense), but don't let that give you the wrong impression... it's very quiet, and out of the way of the hussle and bussle. There's a pharmacy downstairs, coffee and quick bites inside the CNIT, and easy access to the metro and RER. Quick and easy check-in, helpful/attentive staff, all English-speaking. The rooms are modern, very large--especially for Europe, clean, and pleasing to the eye--(soothing colors), great ammenities and ample bathroom. We had delicious breakfasts delivered to our room.

The only drawback I would state is that although the location itself is different and intersting--(a huge, open square with modern buildings and the impressive La Grand Arche), it is a bit outside of Paris. Paris is divided in multiple zones--this is in zone 3, and most of the tourist spots are in zone 1. You will always need to take the metro (about 20 min to Paris) or RER (about 10 min to Paris) to get to the tourist must-sees in Paris. If you don't mind that and like the rest, or get a great deal, you can't go wrong here.

t fault this hotel - excellent value!

from lindyloucoops
My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights during August (English bank holiday weekend). It was perfect for us - can't find any real fault at all.

We found the front desk staff very friendly and helpful - even though we arrived too early (late morning) for our room to be ready for us. Nevertheless the room was made ready for us after 15 minutes - time enough for us to grab a coffee. (the reception staff kept our bags for us whilst we sat in the bar).

We got a superb deal on our room - 270 Euros for both of us in total for the 3 nights - a huge reduction on the real price - don't know why. (even got a room upgrade!)

I think, because the hotel is in the business district, it is a lot quieter at the weekend - obviously they like to fill hotel rooms in quieter spells.

The area around the hotel was busy on the friday afternoon but dead on the saturday/sunday - but this was of no real concern to us as we were happier venturing out to see much more of the city.

The location was not a big deal to us - the metro is literally on your doorstep, cheap, quick and reliable. Everywhere easy to get too once you get to grips with the system.

We have visited Paris a few times before, and will do so again! Love it. We would definitely consider this hotel again as our base!!

t find the entrance!

from JimPrim
We were a party of two couples for a weekend in Paris, we picked the Hilton because you we knew what to expect in terms of comfort, facilities, price and cleanliness. The hotel itself was easy to find, ontop of a shopping centre but we were a bit stumped finding the entrance/reception. It was next to the statue of Ceasar's Thumb. Convenient Metro within metres made getting into Paris centre easy and quick. La Defense itself didn't have too much to offer in terms of restuarants but it was a nice area to stay.

Nice hotel but a bit out of the way

from Perks007
Recently stayed at the Hilton La Defen for 8 nights. I picked the hotel because it was close to where I had to work in Colombes. The hotel itself is nice, clean, and the beds very comfortable. As other reviewers have stated, the rooms are larger than most you will find in Paris and quite comfortable. The staff is was also very helpful. As for touring Paris, the hotel is right on the RER and METRO line which makes a trip to the center of Paris very easy. However, if you go into Paris in the morning and spend the day touring and want to come back to the hotel to change before heading out for the night, it is a bit of a journey. And I happened to be there during some very warm weather, which made Metro travel somewhat unpleasant. Overall the hotel is nice and comfortable with a pleasant staff. The minus, it's a 20-40 minute metro ride to city center and to get back to the hotel, so you'll end up spending a lot of time riding the metro.

Decent Hotel out of City Centre

from fordia
The hotel is great if you are working in La Defense (the business district of Paris). If you are just visiting Paris as a tourist this hotel would be good if the rate was good - it is only 10 minutes from the Arc de Triomphe on the RER that runs very frequently outside. If you want a taxi, there is a rank right outside.

Stayed there for a week in July on work, the rooms were better than I expected although the view from them of the inside of a shopping centre was unusual! The staff were very pleasant and all spoke flawless English (less chance to practice my French!). The room service breakfast was overpriced but I have never foud a hotel where it isn't.

There are quite a few restaurants nearby and an enormous shopping centre.

Good hotel in an out-of-way location

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband, 1 year old son and I have just returned from our Paris vacation of two weeks. We chose to stay at the Hilton Paris La Defense despite its out-of-the-way location for a number of reasons. These included the brand name and good price. But most importantly, since we were travelling with a fair bit of luggage and baby gear, we picked this hotel for its guestroom size, which, on average, tends to be larger than comparable hotels in the city centre. We figured that with a rented car, location would not be a negative factor. (We would be wrong on this count -- read on to learn why.)

The guestroom lived up to our expectations. We had a standard room with a king bed and an inside view looking down into the CNIT shopping concourse. It was spacious enough for baby to happily crawl in and around without causing us to trip over him.The washroom was also quite large and came with a full-size bathtub, but no separate shower.

The reception and cleaning staff were all pleasant to deal with, particularly when we made a few requests such as a baby bed, extra pillows and late housekeeping.

However, the location of this hotel did become a negative for us, particularly around the parking situation and lack of eating establishments after 10 PM. Parking for hotel guests is in the underground garage of the CNIT building. The entrance to this garage is very difficult to find and not where you would expect it to be (i.e., far from the entrance of the hotel, which itself is extremely difficult to locate even with the help of a GPS). Furthermore, the garage closes at 11 p.m. each day. Obviously, this will be a problem if you are out late at night. Your options become very limited as there are no nearby streets to park on since the hotel is inside a mall-like structure.

One night we arrived back at the hotel some minutes after 11 p.m. to face the set of iron bars blocking the garage entrance. It was only because of another car that was leaving at the same time we had arrived (causing the iron bars to lift up) were we able to sneak into the garage and park our vehicle. We got lucky. But our problems did not end there. The nearest hotel entrance from the garage is inside the CNIT shopping concourse. This entrance is also locked at 11 p.m. An option would have been to go outside and around the shopping concourse to access the main door of the Hilton, but the concourse doors to the outside were padlocked. Again, we got lucky. Some guests sitting inside near the first entrance realized our predicament and called for a manager to let us in. If they hadn't, we (including our baby) would've been trapped in the concourse for who knows how long!

The other negative of the location concerns the poor food choices, especially late at night. The only restaurants open are a couple of burger joints and casual restaurants in the Quatre Temps shopping centre across the hotel. There is also a Hippotamus, a casual chain eatery, in the CNIT concourse at the base of the hotel. Be forewarned that none of these places, with the exception of the fast food joints, open beyond 10 PM. Again, you could be stuck with limited options after a certain hour.

Would we recommend this hotel to non-business travellers? It depends. Yes, if you don't mind the far-from-city-centre location and are willing to take the conveniently nearby public transit (RER, Metro). No, if you are planning to drive around Paris and would like to enjoy late nights out on the town.

Friendly, charming staff in an immacuately clean hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We six ladies stayed in the hotel in early April 2006 having been attracted by the Hilton name and the excellent rates (£69 per room per night). The hotel has an unusual design and, as some reviewers have mentioned, some of the rooms overlook the shopping mall. The reception staff were excellent throughout our stay. We asked for and were given rooms with connecting doors. The rooms were immaculately clean and well equipped with lovely crisp white bedding. The shopping centre on the other side of the square has a number of low cost restaurants if you do not want to venture into the centre of Paris. Transport links are excellent, especially the RER. I notice an earlier reviewer mentioned that his wife had been robbed near the hotel. We never experienced anything like this and felt that it was in a safe area although, like any major city, you need to be careful. We would definitely recommend this hotel.

Out of city centre but only 10 mins on underground

from scotbon
We went to Paris for a long weekend in January 2006 and picked the Hilton because of the brand name but advertised at a very competitive rate (£82 per night).

Location: Out of city centre (thus better price) but under 10 mins if you used the RER train service (very clean and efficent). We made the mistake of using the Metro first time and it took nearly 20 mins. The train station is below the hotel - very convenient.

First Impressions: Admittedly a bit disappointed as we entered the shopping mall in which the hotel is located. This improved as we entered the hotel - lobby and reception were what we expected of a good Hilton Hotel.

Rooms, Facilities, Staff etc.: Reception staff were excellent. We were asked if we wanted to upgrade our room from one facing into the shopping mall under a concrete roof! to an outer room looking over the square. We did and YOU MUST. Because it was a good deal to start with the extra £10 was worth it. We went for a 'relaxation' room. The room was fantastic. Bright, modern and plenty of space. The TV set into the wall in the whirlpool bathroom was a nice touch. Dining room and breakfast were very good. All the staff were very polite and helpful.

Conclusions: We would recommend this hotel for a few nights in Paris. Despite being 'out of town' it is a good location in the modern business district. We also discovered a great shopping centre on the other side of the square - glad my wife found it on the last day!

PS Someone else commented on being robbed outside the hotel - I feel very sorry for them - but they were unlucky. Not indicative of the surrounding area.

Great stay at Hilton Paris La Defense

from hellokitty95
We stayed at the Hilton Paris La Defense for 4 nights in early March 2006 on our Hilton points and thoroughly enjoyed the stay. The location is on the periphery of the city Center on the termination stop La Defense of Metro Line 1, which made it easy to get to and from the center of Paris (takes about 20 min). We purchased a carte Orange 1 week pass from the RATP counter for easy transport during our stay to and from the center of Paris. Also, you can take the SNCF La Defense to Versailles R.D. to visit the Chateau (trip is only 20 min from La Defense/2 euro one way). The hotel itself is in excellent condition compared to some older hotels. The rooms are large with equally large bathrooms. Amenities include: minibar, water boiler for tea & coffee, in-room safe, scale in bathroom. Front desk was helpful in giving us tips on getting to and from the sites we wanted to see on our trip. We would stay here again.

Poor security at night

from A TripAdvisor Member
The evening security in front of the hotel is poor. My wife was robbed of her purse right in front of the hotel one evening by 3 youths. There was no hotel doorman or security guard. Upon reporting the incident, the hotel staff was not very sympathetic or helpful. I would have expected more from a Hilton branded hotel. If you are a tourist traveling in Paris, be very careful around this hotel at night after dinner time.

Top Local Tips for Paris La Defense

Metro When buying tickets buy a 'carnet' which is a book of ten metro tickets. It is a cheaper than buying tickets individually. However, make sure you buy these in the city centre rather than the outskirts of Paris, as they are around 6 Euros cheaper.

When 4stars are not 4stars The reason many people book with established chains like Marriott and Hilton is that they expect a standard of quality and consistency across locations and countries. However, often this is not the case. In Europe you generally drop 1star from the rating as compared to American hotels. Also, you'll find no consistency on ratings when shopping for hotels on the internet. Just be aware of this and try to google for hotel reviews before relying on reviews from just one website or expectations from prior chain hotel experiences. Published rack rate is not an indication of hotel quality either as most people never pay rack rate even during high season.

Taxi versus RER Took a taxi from Charles De Gaulle to La Defense which took nearly an hour at considerable cost. Took the RER back in 25 minutes at a fraction of the cost.
