Historical Traveller Reviews of Westin Paris Hotel

Rude and Inept

from Mike_D_Ann_Arbor
Apparently, now that the Le Grande is the flagship Intercontinental in Paris, this Intercontinental on Rue de Castiglione is left with the staff dregs. I visited the hotel in late September while in town for the motor show. The front desk told me prior to my stay that there would be high-speed Internet in the room. There is a modem data port; that's it.

Even though I am an Ambassador member, the whole staff treated me with contempt. Calls to the front desk and concierge went unanswered, and I didn't get the room I had reserved. The staff at the restaurant was rude and incompetent.

The "business center" reeked of smoke and consisted of two crappy computers, one broken. There wasn't even a phone, so getting work done was very difficult. I paid $200 for wireless access to get work done while there; it only worked in the smoky lobby. All week I was running upstairs to use the phone and back down to get online and file stories (I am a journalist).

The final insult came when I tried to mail some documents. The concierge said he'd send a bellman right up with a Fedex box. After two hours, nobody came. I went down to the concierge desk and there was a line of people waiting but no concierge in sight. I gave up and left the hotel, hopefully never to return.

Interconti nice but disappointing

from bcm21mk
We just returned from Paris yesterday, having spent 6 nights at the Intercontinental. As the previous reviewer indicated, I too was an Ambassador client and was expecting an upgrade and view of the Tuileries Gardens. I was assured at booking that this would be provided. Instead the room wasn't ready when we arrived in the morning and we were told to come back in an hour, but they sent us to the bar for some complimentary coffee. All was still well. When we were assigned our room it was not on a high floor and was facing a tiny courtyard with ASTROTURF! Needless to say I called the front desk to ask for a better room. The woman who had helped us at the desk was haughty and flatly said No! We had a deluxe room (not to my mind)and it was quiet! (I'll agree with her on that one) I should also mention that 5 nights out of the 6 were complimentary because they were rewards nights. I felt this was probably the reason we were assiged this kind of location. But after reading the previous viewer I realize it really didn't make any difference. You just weren't getting preferential service. Anyway I was disappointed and wrote my comments on a survey several days later and was hoping the manager would read it and act upon it. Instead they sent us another basket of fruit and a bottle of wine. Eventually I got over it and simply enjoyed Paris as always. In the end I did enjoy the room for what it was , its spacious bathroom, comfortable bed and fine linens, etc. I was just disappointed that I did not receive the treatment I was led to believe I would without having to ask for it. I could have stayed at the Le Grand Interconti but several reviewers on TripAdvisors mentioned the metro rumbling under their floor and I decided against it. I think the room would have been nicer. Next time we stay on the Left Bank where all the action is!

Hotel was great, but not all expecations met.

The Paris Intercontinental has the greatest location for seeing the sites, catching the metro and simply walking and window shopping. However, as a premium member of Priority Rewards (Ambassador), I was given assurances of early check-in, upgrade in room to the Club floor, access to the club lounge, etc., none of which were provided. Beware of promises at time of booking. Also, save yourself time and aggrevation and do not use the Internet to book tickets to opera, concerts, museum pass, metro, local tours, etc. All are easily available when you arrive and you won't have to spent taxi fares and extra time securing your local vouchers. Bring plenty of money - Paris is more expensive that we could have imagined -- even casual meals without wine were were over $50 for two.

A pleasurable Parisian stay

from kakow
Stayed at the Intercontinental for 4 nights in Sep this year. We have stayed at numerous Intercontinental properties throughout the US and Asia and this one is one of the better ones. Even though we had two nights free coupon, the management had no problem fullfilling our need to have a room with a view of the Eiffel Tower, the more expensive rooms due to the view. The room is a little bit smaller than the room facing the courtyard, but what a view! You can see the Tower, the garden, the Lourve, Musee D'Orsay, and the rest of the right bank. The view is especially great late at night and early in the mornig. You will know why Paris is called the city of light.
The location is close to the metro, shopping district of St. Honore, but without the noise and the crowds of Le Grand Intercontinental. We can't wait to go back next year!

A great experience

This is a great hotel. We stayed for 5 days December 18th 2003. The club level is small, but first class. Try to book on the club level if you can, breakfast, drinks and snacks. It may not be the best "5 Star" hotel, but for the money in Paris its a bargin.

Loved the Paris Intecontinental, 3 Rue de Castiglione!!!

Stayed here 10 days in late July 04.
Wonderful! Hotel was beautiful, room was very big and nice! Room AC felt great!Had room on back side, quiet, big bath. Daughter joined us later in our stay and our room was still PLENTY big with a fold out sofa, walk in closet.

Great location for many cafes, restaurants, shopping, museums, sightseeing. We had great internet rate for club level that was well worth it. All the hotel staff were wonderful, very helpful and courteous. Very nice decor, courtyard was a nice centerpoint, day and night.
Club lvl breakfast, tea time and cocktail hour was a delight. Club level concierge and staff was tops! Nice folks. Nightly champagne was very pleasant break after sightseeing and before dinner...

Only ate 1 meal in hotel...there were so many quaint and good places to eat next door and withing blocks. Emailed concierge ahead for dinner reservations on Eiffel Tower, Altitude 95 and we got the best window seat thru his efforts. Very knowledgable and resourceful main concierge staff!
We had early check in confirmed ahead due to early flight arrival. All super smooth. VERY nice hotel. Highly recommend this hotel. Beautiful place to take my wife to fulfill a 20 yr old promise.

Very Nice

Stayed at the Intercontinental while travelling with two children (10 and 13 yrs old; three total in the room). The hotel lobby and staff were courteous and knowledgeable. The concierge recommended several restaurants/stores and also arranged two excursions to my satisfaction. We were in a "deluxe" room with a courtyard view (which I prefer as you don't have any street noise) that accommodated a comfortable rollaway bed that was free of charge. The room was nicely appointed, very comfortable, and large by Parisian standards. I have stayed at many luxury hotels around the world and found the Intercontinental an excellent value and would definitely stay there again.

A great experience. The staff was attentive and friendly. The rooms were wonderful - we had a great view of the Park. And speaking of the Park, joggers will love rolling out of the hotel and into the Tuilleries, around the Louvre then up the Seine. The location was simply perfect. I don't have a single complaint about this hotel.

I stayed five nights at the Paris IC in early March. I loved the location - so convenient to everything you would want to see in Paris: the Louvre, the Musee D'Orsay, Eiffel Tower, etc. The check-in staff was very accomodating and the conceriege helpful. The room was very large by European standards, tastefully decorated. There was just one major problem throughout my stay - NOISE! There was construction / repair noise almost every day until seven or so at night. The housekeeping staff made the area directly outside my room their "staging" area for my floor and consequently was awoken early every day by their banter and equipement. Lucky me! To their credit, an IC hotel manager responded quickly to my comments, with a promise of an upgrade on my next visit. I appreciate their efforts.

Perfect Location - perfect view

This was our second trip to Paris, and we had a great experience at the hotel. We arrived at about 11am, after an overnight flight, and we greeted by a very charming woman at the front desk. Since we were staying 8 nights, it was a bit of a challenge finding a room that was available for the entire stay, that was ready. She persisted and offered us a large room, with no view, or a smaller room with a view. Of course we took the view, and were rewarded with french doors opening to a spectacular view of the Tuilleries, Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. Yes the room was small, by US standards, but very comfortable. Marble bath and high-end linens and towels didn't hurt. One thing to be aware of - the mini-bar!. When you move - or remove any item, even if it is replaced, you will be automatically charged! They do provide a designated area for guest use though. Most staff was very pleasant and accommodating. Restaurant prices are ridiculous. Had a fabulous meal 2 blocks away at Le Souffle - less than 100 euro for 3 courses each, and a couple glasses of great bubbly.
