Eiffel Tower Views for First Time Visit!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at the Hotel Splendid in the 7th Arrondissement from 2-9 May 04. After researching several dozen hotels online, I chose Hotel Splendid and was very happy with my decision. My criteria were 1) Eiffel Tower views, 2) near Metro, 3) safe neighborhood (since I was traveling alone and female), and 4) not a chain hotel. I opted to pay a bit more for a junior suite on the fifth floor with a view of the Eiffel Tower, but did not take the breakfast option. It was great to see the Eiffel Tower each morning and to watch it sparkle every hour on the hour at night (until 0100). The double bed (two singles together) was firm and comfortable, and the staff made sure to adjust the temperature daily (either by turning on the heat or opening the windows). The room came with a small sitting area, closet and minibar (I moved things over to stash my cheese and wine). Rue Cler was fun to walk thru and had some outstanding cheese shops. I would not recommend the 24 hour brasserie across the street...the food is mediocre at best (but convenient if you're just too tired to go out to eat). Otherwise, for breakfast, try Cafe La Source (up the street near Invalides) and Le Champs de Mars across from the park. There is also a supermarket just down the street, but be aware that it closes early (around 2100, I think). A better choice is Monoprix, or if you're planning a special occasion, Le Grand Epicerie next to the Bon Marche; both are in the 6th Arrondissement. Make sure to take or buy a corkscrew for your wine! Also, the self-service laundry across the street takes longer than standard US machines...about 45 minutes for the washer, but only 20 minutes to dry. It cost about 5 euros (yes, that's about $6.50) per load. Overall, Hotel Splendid was perfect for my first (and definitely not last) trip to Paris. Thanks especially to Frederic at the front desk!

Good for a short stop

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed in the hotel in April 04 and i have to say the room was very nice. we where with a large group of people and all had a nice room through out. Breakfast was a bit on the scabby side and VERY expensive for what they where giving you. €25. Bar staff a bit slow to react, Over all i would visit this hotel again but only for a short hop.

Surprisingly nice!

from AlpineLife
I must say I was a little trepidatious about the Hotel Splendid. I booked it on Expedia where I saw a photo of a cute "triangle-shaped" hotel that looked "just right" but the price seemed too good to be true. I was pleasantly surprised when we viewed the room before accepting it. Carpets clean, clean twin beds (as described, not the "euro-switcheroo" where they say sleeps two, but they mean "sleeps siamese-twins"). The bathroom was efficient and CLEAN! Sparkling, new, clean curtain. No mold. Downstairs the lobby was bright and tasteful with a small bar. At the end of the day, the nice concierge/bartender fixed me a drink and we had a nice chat. You can't beat the location!
We looked out our window (OK, we had to lean a little) and watched the sunset on the Eiffel Tower!! Did you know there is a light show at dusk? Need I say more? I think you can tell I was very please with our visit. Ritz-Carleton it's not, but who needs that when you are running around checking out street art and metro-musicians!

Location, location, location.

I agree with April 8 review. This is an adequate hotel that is a great place for a home base. A lot of stuff nearby, and the Eiffel Tower is visible from the window (slight lean to the left for us).

A lot of shops, a supermarket nearby, and a laundromat across the street. Pretty quiet at night, too.

Not so sure about this place

from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed here for a few days in April. It was my first time in Paris and I was a little shocked. Our room was fairly dirty - the ceiling was crumbling and when you showered, the ceiling in the bathroom leaked.
The walls are very thin and you could not only hear everything, but since there are no non-smoking rooms, the smoke from other rooms would filter in through the walls and doors. Also, the bed was extremely worn - it was very very soft and low to the ground. The bathroom (en suite) was clean though, which was good. The hotel is close to the Eiffel Tower, which was nice, but the closest metro (Militaire) is under renovation and closes at 9pm until June 21st I think. Hotel staff was ok, but as usual, everything was an additional charge. The safe in the room had no lock and in order to get it, you had to pay 2.50 euro per day for it. I am jusy not very sure about this place.

Excellent location, adequate hotel

from teeraveller
We booked this hotel based on reviews on tripadvisor. This hotel met our needs perfectly. We were looking for an adequate hotel with excellent location. If you are looking for a posh hotel with luxurious rooms, this is not the place for you. But for a room with adquate space (altho not spacious by US standards) for the double sized bed, the desk and luggage for two, this room met our needs. It is dated, the bed not as comfortable but only okay, and the shape of our room was oddly elongated. The bathroom was literally a closet, but it was clean with double the toiletries. Bring your own alarm clock, as I didn't see one in the room. The TV had only one english-speaking channel, but we were able to watch Eddie Murphy speaking french on another channel. A perk is if you lean slightly out the balcony (not too heavily as it was wobbly) you do get a view of the Eiffel Tower from our window. But the primary reason we chose this hotel was its location, which was excellent. It is on busy corner, true, but in a relatively quiet neighborhood esp. at night so noise was not a factor. There are great eateries and grocery stores across the street and Rue Cler market around the corner. The hotel is across the Ecole Militaire (the bldg not the Metro stop) and steps from the Champs de Mars, Tour Eiffel, le Invalides, and Musee de Rodin. If you need to get around by Metro, the station is also conveniently around the corner, although I must warn that it is one of the early closing stations. Service was friendly, tho we did not really stay at the hotel much, it sufficed our needs and we enjoyed our stay.

Typical Parisian Attitute

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at Le splendid for Valentine's Day, 2004. The room was small, the beds extremely worn-down, and not to mention the problem opening the room door. In terms of location to the Eiffel Tower, perfect. The staff forgot the 7:00 am wake- up call and somehow I miraculously woke up at 8:00am--the time the shuttle driver was scheduled to arrive. When I checked out and questioned the staff about the wake up call, I was told that simply forgot to write it down. When the hotel recommended- airport- shuttle dropped us at the airport, the driver wanted more money even though I showed him the hotel paid receipt. After we get dropped off, at the wrong terminal, we only had 5 minutes left before the gate closed. Thank to British Airways, we were booked on business class to Heathrow. I do not recommed this hotel. Typical Parisian Attitute.

Great French Romantic Experience

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Splendid last week(3-26-29-04). I stayed at this hotel solely based on the reviews on this website. I was looking for the French experience in my hotel and this was the right place. The rooms are like the ones you would expect in Europe, small yet clean and functional. The location is perfect if one intends on using the Metro to get around. There are many fine eating establishments that are very close and I would recommend NOT eating at the hotel and walking across the street for your crepes. The staff was extremely helpful and polite. One precaution for travellers looking for peace and quiet. The hotel is on a very busy corner. However, for those looking for a truly French romantic experience this is the hotel for you.

Good location and nice hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed at this hotel from 18/03/04 to 21/03/04.Its a nice hotel, and a very good location, near loads of good bars and resturants, and an area which is nice and clean and you fell safe in.The room was of a reasonable size, and the bathroom was very clean and nice. We had a balcony and great views of eiffle tower. The drawbacks are that the bed was too low, and not very comfortable. Also they have t.vs in the room, but all the channels are in french, so no point in having a tv in the room. The breakfast was too expensive and basic, so we tended to eat out near the many resturants nearby. The staff was nice and helpful, overall a good hotel for the price, but need to get satalite tv in, and better beds.

Nice, but

I just stayed at the Hotel Splendid, and while it is a clean and attractive hotel with a good location near the Ecole Militaires metro stop, it is far from perfect. The rooms that we received for a family of three was absurdly small with a bathroom to match. To be fair, this is a problem with most Paris hotels that are reasonably priced, as the Hotel Splendid is. The staff was pleasant, but there were problems there, too. I asked for basic information about transportation service to Charles de Gaulle airport and was given wrong information, which almost caused us to miss our flight. The reception desk should certainly make sure they have accurate information and that it's up to date. They directed us to the Air France shuttle service at Invalides, which only provides service to Orly. Again, to be fair, for the money this is probably a good deal, considering the costs of Parisian hotels.
But we opted not to spend the 10 Euros for the assortment of breads and pastries that the hotel offered. Instead, we were able to get a breakfast of eggs, bacon, and croissants at one of the nearby brasseries for about the same amount of money.Joyce Davis

Top Local Tips for Paris

Walk the streets of Paris There seemed to be a Metro stop every couple of blocks which can mean it takes a while to cover a small distance on the Metro. I recommend walking around Paris where possible in favour of transport. Eiffel Tower to Musee D'Orsay takes about 20 mins on foot. Eiffel Tower to Notre Dame takes just over 30 mins. Definitely the best way to take in the sights and atmosphere of Paris.

Get to know the metro The metro is great and takes 2 mins to suss it out. Its fast and takes you all the places you need to go.

How to get to hotel I suggest the RER from Charles deGaul airport to downtown Paris - then catch a taxi! It is difficult to navigate the subway (Metro) with luggage.
