Top Local Tips for Paris
La Tour de Montparnasse For a fantastic view of the Eiffel Tower at night, go to the Ciel de Paris atop the Tour de Montparnasse. Food is quite good; the experience, terriffic. Two seatings. Reserve.
Choose arrondisement wisely Hard to get taxis so choose hotel close to sights you want to see the most. Also, important to be near restaurants & cafes. We've been to Paris many times and we amazed soooo many people everywhere. Pantheon area and Right Bank lovely locations with less people. Getting rid of car in Montparnasse was a nightmare. Luckily we arrived on a Sunday but still hard to find, park, and then had to locate garage---45 minutes to get rid of the car. Better to unload it at the airport. Try to make arrangements to get to CDG early, van pick-up terrific--security is very tight, man arrested by gendarmes right next to us.
Lower your voice... The French tend to be a hushed people. Try to speak quietly in most situations. Cafes and restaurants situate tables extremely close to one another and people lean in to have their conversations. Don't be the voice that everyone can hear ringing out above all the others in any given situation. And oh yeah, try to speak French beyond bonjour and au revoir. My french is poor but I learned enough to order a glass of wine and my meal in french. The people I came across really seemed to appreciate that I was trying and most were very warm. I did not encounter the stereotypical rudeness I have heard so much about.
