Historical Traveller Reviews of Ritz Paris Hotel

Le Grande Dame

from A TripAdvisor Member
I have frequented most of the finest hotels in this world, yet NOTHING compares to Ritz Paris! A hotel in a class of its own. Want to get tickets for a show that has been sold out a year, well at the Ritz, give them an Hour and you will have some of the best seats, (I have NEVER paid a sur charge) however, it is MOST DEFINITELY EXPECTED that you tip accordingly, (on the ++++ side) for whatever even, dinding arangement, or errand you have the hotel arrange.
Rooms can be small, but they will gladly accomodate your requests for a larger room if stated in advance. Elegant, Frette Sheets on all beds, 24 hour maid service and dining available. Have always stayed at Ritz, and always will, $500 and up 4 a standard so don't be shocked by the bill, Prestigue stuites such as the Coco Chanel suite will cost approx $2000 USD per nt. Slightly below expectations

from s_s_ryan
I was at the Ritz from the 22nd to the 24th of December 2004 after which I moved to the George V (review also written). I had a lot of expectations for this hotel considering its reputation. However, although I had an excellent experience there, it was slightly, very slightly below expectations. First impressions of the hotel will blow you away. Its sumptuous, opulent and gilded decor will make you just gasp. It is really beautiful in a Versailles sort of way. The suite I had was lovely but there were a few signs of wear on some of the furniture. However, I think it added to the charm of the room as it felt a bit more like a home rather than a cold hotel room. The location on the Place Vendome is beautiful and exclusive. The part which I found a bit wanting was the service. It's not that the service is bad, it's actually one of the best in Paris, as it should be. However, the problem was that it was inconsistent. There were occasions when the concierge on duty was far from helpful or even if he was, he made it feel like he HAD to be nice rather than sincerely nice. Nonetheless, overall service is above par especially at the Bar Vendome and L'Espadon which by the way has excellent food. I would still recommend people to stay at this hotel, if anything, for the Ritz Paris experience. More likely then not, you will probably bump into a celebrity there during your stay like I did. Apart from that slight blip in service, it is a really wonderful hotel.

Service lacking

from bizguy
My wife and I stayed here for three nights in December 2003. The room we were given was larger than what we had booked and was on the better side of the hotel facing Place Vendôme. We weren't charged any extra for the bigger room. Breakfast service was laughable for a hotel with the Ritz's reputation and prices. My wife ordered tea with lemon. The busboy dropped the lemon slice on the floor, carefully picked it up with his silver tongs and replaced it on her saucer! When we returned home there was on our credit card statement a charge for a mini-bar item that we hadn't taken or signed for. I was able to get the credit card company to remove the charge from my statement because I hadn't signed for it. The decorations in the hotel are sumptuous but during our stay could have used a good dusting.

Grand of course but not memorable

from Kessel
I spent a weekend at the Ritz - it is certainly more luxurious and friendly than the stiff Ritz, London. Taking a deluxe room I really expected to sink into exquisite comforts, judging by the website pics. In fact it is very handsome, but austere - the bathroom was long with twin sinks but a dearth of bath products and no big shower rose. The page who escorted me to the 4th floor (elegant corridors) did not even bother to show me how to use the key or operate the room switches - I had to ask him. There were no welcoming complimentary sweets or wine which some other hotels manage. No one passed by to ask how I found the room - another unforgettable fine touch I've encountered elsewhere. All the Ritz hotels I've stayed in (except Madrid) fail on these memorable extras. The aristocratic decor is gorgeous, as is the real log fire in the lounge - where I saw Mohammed al-Fayed sitting talking with an English woman and being discreetly ogled by another guest. I was surprised however at the cameras in the corridors and evidence of security - who asked me to stop walking around all the hotel corridors (when staying in such places I usually like to explore). Beyond that the food was excellent - a high point was the special Ritz room service breakfast with champagne. L'Espadon is also not the most expensive restaurant around (unlike George V's Cinq restaurant) but I've definitely eaten better elsewhere. What disappointed me was their breakfast - not buffet, but formally served, so you have to wait for the waiters to come round and of course they forgot items I'd ordered while in a buffet you can browse at your leisure and eat your fill. They have a lovely health suite and pleasant secluded terraces - unfortunately too cold to use in October. The location in Place Vendome (where Chopin died) is great. But the George V does those personal touches better, Ritz it seemed to me, hardly at all.

The Best Ever

from heme34
We stayed 2 nights at the Ritz in Paris Oct. 1-3, 2004. It was a rare experience. The personnel treated us wonderfully and upgraded us to a suite which was magnificent. The food, service, and facilities are all outstanding. We used the fitness center, pool, shops and had great experience in all. This is by far our best hotel visit and we plan to return.

very nice surprise

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed in The Ritz Hotel for the 6th time a few months ago to celebrate my birthday. The service is impressive as is the security, the staff is very friendly and the rooms are very nice. I ordered some hard to get items, among them an auction magazine, at the beginning of the afternoon, when i came back at about six o'clock everything i ordered was there. On my departure i got a bottle of Ritz champagne with a 'happy birthday' text, a very nice surprise. Together with the Vier Jahreszeiten Hotel in Hamburg i like this hotel very much.

Still the Best

from A TripAdvisor Member
Just returned from our latest trip to the Ritz. Happy to report that the service and the property itself are still at their peak. After many trips to Europe, and staying at some of the best hotels therein, I have to say that our favorite remains the Ritz (George V coming in a close second).

Cest Bon!

This was the most beautiful hotel I have ever seen.
We had a very nice time here. We couldn't believe our room, it was a deluxe with high ceilings and a chandelier above the bed. The bathroom had gold swan faucets...very luxurious.
The staff was great, the restaurante was wonderful and the Hemmingway bar was one of a kind.

One thing I do have to say though is that the gigantic antique French tapestry on our bedroom wall had an unusual subject....a dog going to the bathroom...not sure what that was all about but as long as you didn't look at it too long it didn't bother you.

Top Local Tips for Paris

If Ritz restaurants booked out.... There was some event on at the Ritz one night that we were unaware of so all restaurants were fully booked. The "Hotel Vendome" next door has a beautitul restaurant with professional waiters and great food. Just make a booking at reception through the main entrance of the hotel. Perfect for a cold night when you dont want to have to venture too far.

Say Cheese If you want to bring cheese back to the states, ask the Cheese (Frommage) store to vacuum seal it for you. They will assist you in finding cheese that does not need refrigeration and will keep until you get back.

l'Orangerie Museum This small museum in the Tuillerie Gardens has works by many famous painters, including unbelievable panels by Monet. It is much easier to navigate because it is smaller than the Louvre. In an hour and a half you can see it all. Be sure to get a headset so you can listen in your language to the story behind many of the paintings in the gallery.
