Top Local Tips for Paris
Paris is not as I expected Paris is huge, I expected a smaller, quainter city with more charm than it really has to offer. I found other European cities to be far more charming. We did not find the restaraunts and dining experience to be any better than any other city. Hit or miss. Nothing spectacular. However, the baguetts, baguett sandwiches, and crepes from street vendors were fabulous. Coffee and beer are also of greater quality than that which you get in the States. The attractions were just okay, but we did not do a lot of sightseeing, we were there to visit our daughter. The fashion and shopping were fun, St. Michaels street and the open market are recommended. Public transportation is easy. Take a cab to and from the airport. We went to the Lido show, it was good but way too much money for what you get. Very expensive city. I had a romantic vision of this city, but found it too be very commercial and over rated.
General notes on Paris Public transport is very inexpensive, including taxis (compared to London of course!). The new Velib' service is absolutely brilliant - http://www.velib.paris.fr/ People are friendly and like to speak English, even though (or maybe because?!) I tried out my very bad French on them as much as possible. The Moulin Rouge is outrageously expensive and the quality of the performers nowhere near as good as London's West End - but it was a laugh and worth going for the experience (no need to dress up, casual is fine). The Batobus is also a great way to get across the city, if you prefer to stay above ground and enjoy boat travel. Book in advance or make plenty of time for the Eiffel Tower - queues were HUGE. Save money and don't eat breakfast in the hotel - there are cafes everywhere and the experience is much nicer.
Tourist Bus Do not buy the 2 day pass, one day is more than enough because the route is fairly short. Use the subway that is very easy to understand.
