Horrible, dirty - avoid!

The room was filthy and disgusting, as was the bathroom which had mould growing in the cracked tiles around the bath. The paint was peeling and the carpet was threadbare or ripped in parts. When I complained I was given the keys to two other rooms (not even taken to them by a member of staff), and both were equally revolting. The "double" bed was tiny and the windows didn't close or open properly. When I complained the manager was so abusive that I gave up and called the head office. They clearly didn't care either and I will never go back again, either there or to any of their other hotels (it is part of the 'Les Hotels de Paris' group).

Excellent location for exploring Paris. Rooms are very large for European standards. Staying at this hotel is a truly Parisian experience. Staff was courteous and rooms clean. Large bathrooms. One block from the Louvre. One block from Metro stop. If you've never been to Paris and want a romantic getaway, this is the place to stay.

Overall, you'd expect more from a hotel with four stars, so don't pay even near their published prices for rooms (starting at 487 euros, I think). I believe we paid about 200 euros per night for 3 persons. The best thing about this hotel is its location. At the Louvre and centrally located between the Marais, Opera and all other tourist destinations, neighborhoods and metros. Lots of great restaurants in the neighborhood or within walking distance directly to the Marais. We were 3 persons...spent 4 nights in Rm 502. It was a large room with a surprisingly large bathroom with double sink and plenty of supplies, including a blow-dryer. 2 single beds with a rollaway bed placed in the room for 3rd person. The single beds were ok, but definitely not 'four star' quality. Apparently, the rollaway bed was very comfortable. The pillows were very small and very flat, so we had to request several more (four stars?). There was plenty of room to hang clothes and plenty of drawers. Staff was nice and accommodating. The day doorman was friendly and the room was always cleaned well. We had absolutely no problem with the heat, but if it gets too hot and you have to open your window, cars will be honking occasionally (daytime, mostly), and there is (every other day or so) early-morning garbage pick-up noise. I agree with Southampton, England (Feb. 8, 2004)...his review was right on; don't expect luxury. We were happy with the central location, the hotel was fine for the price we paid.

We had booked on the internet at a "winter special" rate of ?70 per night. Just a little disturbed to read the negative reviews after booking.We have stayed in much worse conditions, room was just OK, bed was lumpy. We did not use the mini bar, expensive, nor eat in the hotel. As a base for central Paris it was excellent but don't expect 4 star luxury, We would have been very disappointed to have paid the advertised rates and stayed in a room of this standard.Other larger and more expensive rooms may well be better, they would need to be considerably better to justify price.For the price we paid and central location we were happy.

Approach the Normandy with caution!

The Normandy can work, but you need to know what you're getting into.
First of all, put all notions of "4-star" out of your head. If you're looking for a luxury property, you should be shopping the Crillion, Ritz, etc.

The Normandy was probably a grand hotel years ago, but it is pretty tired right now. Don't even consider paying the published $200-$400 rates for this place, or you'll be sorely disappointed. If you're a college student or an adventurous traveler who doesn't mind "shabby chic", and you can get a cheap Web special (we paid $113 US), the place can work. It's clean and well located; you can walk to many attractions.

A few other things we learned: we traveled with friends so we got to see several rooms, all priced at the same US$113. No two were the same.
A few were pleasantly remodeled; some were dark and depressing. The "07" rooms (207, 307, 407, etc.) are large corner rooms, with large bathrooms that include a separate shower and bidet. We weren't thrilled with our first room, asked for another one, and were accomodated with no argument. The English-speaking staff was pleasant and accomodating, but don't expect 4-star frills, like a doorman and help with your luggage.

Don't consume any food or beverages here. The breakfast is absurdly expensive at 25 euros. Take a walk to a cafe, which is much more interesting, anyway. The same for cocktails: one of our party paid about $14 for a gin and tonic in the lobby bar.

Finally, if you know Paris/French at all, consider staying in a more interesting, residential neighborhood than the 1er arronndissement.
You'll get a much better sense of daily Parisian life. The surrounding Rue di Rivoli is full of tacky shops selling kitschy Eiffel Towers, Moulin Rouge t-shirts and stuffed pink poodles.

great location 5 mins from Louvre. but seriously over priced on 20 january 2004, in spite of discount to Stg£132 per room. wallpaper was peeling from walls, wooden windows rotting in panes, no air conditioning, terrible plunbing and really awful doudy furniture in rooms akin to what i threw out months ago at home. management told but do not care and unwilling to move on price. they know it is a 4 star con but they say that is what it is rated as. French authorities are parties to this con trick on unsuspecting tourists as they grade the hotels. do not go there and please tell everyone. the only way to get value for money is to stay away from this typical Parisian rubbish.

Overpriced --- 4 stars? I think not.

The location was superb, but the room was overpriced. The tub never drained properly, therefore I had the pleasure of taking a shower while standing in a pool of my own filth. The room itself was clean, but far from spotless. I was there for a weekend, but would not have stayed if it had been over three nights. For what you get, pay no more than 55 - 60 per person a night.

After a fabulous 3 weeks in France, we spent out last 2 nights at the Normandy Hotel. Upon arrival and check in we realised that the advertising for this hotel was extermely misleading. Well and truely overdue for a refurbishment and perhaps some training for the staff in professional behaviour.

My wife and I recently stayed in the Normandy (room 607), and while it probably doesn't deserve the 4 star rating, it was not as horrible as some of the reviews suggest. Our room was comfortable and clean and I saw none of the peeling wallpaper or dirty corridors mentioned in some reviews.I will admit that the breakfast & bar prices were high for the quality, but the location is excellent and if you get a decent discounted rate via the web, you shouldn't be disappointed.

I stayed at the Normandy for one night in October 2003. The place is a dump. If you are looking for a hotel close to the Louvre, stay at the Hotel de Louvre.

Tired but good service

Our room at the Normandy was tired and the corridors had obviously seen better times. Yet the location is fabulous, our room was very big for Parisian standards, and the heavily discounted rates you can get in the Web make it good value for money. I was very impressed with the service, though. They called me a taxi to go to the airport, and when I got there somehow I forgot about collecting my change (40 euros!!) from the taxi driver. I called the hotel, they tracked the driver, collected the money and sent it back to me. Now, this I call service. I don't think many hotels in Paris would have done this for a customer that was already hundreds of miles away.

Arrived early on Friday and check-in wasn't until 2:00 PM, so I dropped off my bags and went around the city. Came back at 2:00 PM only to find that my room was still not ready. Finally, checked in at 2:45, found the room to be extremely small and quite dirty. Bathroom was clean, but the room terrible. Service also sucked, but the staff did speak English. The bar at the hotel is ridiculous expensive, Manhattan hotels seem cheap. A cup of coffee is close to 5 euros, a Coke is 4.50 euros...you get the idea. So, other than location, close to the Louvre and the Opera, this hotel sucks big...no value for your money...just like the rest of Paris.

Top Local Tips for Paris

By all means go to Paris Paris is one of the most beautiful cities I hav ever been to - 6 trips and counting. Highly recommend the Effiel Tower at sunset and the cruise on the Seine for picture taking. Go to the ballet - wait to see if they have "no show" tickets just before the performance and you might get lucky like we did and end up with a box seat and your own personal waitress to fetch your champagne at intermission. It is a grand city.

Le Louchebem A great restaurant on the rue de Berger, not far from the Pont Neuf. "Louchebem" is a sort of argot term for "boucher" (butcher), and there's lots of meat on the menu. I wasn't hungry enough for a big steak, but a bowl of soupe d'oignon gratinee, a plate of a half-dozen escargot, and a glass of beer later, I was very happy. The service is attentive and pleasant, the food is terrific, and it's in a very nice location if you've been wandering around Ile de la Cite or Les Halles.

Buses Take the Bus! Really easy to use, buy a carnet of 10 tickets that work for all the public transport. All the bus stops have maps of all the routes, and the buses are colour coded. They beat the metro as you can see where you go!
