Rent a car to see the area better While Parking is expensive and hard to find sometimes, renting a car in France is generally not hard and driving there (other than Paris) is not really any worse than driving in the States. If you have any experience with traffic circles, you won't have any issues driving in France. Paris is comparable to NYC, but slightly worse because of the motorcyclists and scooters that rule the roads, weaving and zigging their way in between cars without notice. Most drivers are considerate, and if you show the same consideration to others, you will be rewarded.
Bring a photo so you can get a NaviGO transit pass A "NaviGO" transit pass greatly speeds using the metro, RER, or bus. (NaviGO has replaced what used to be called a "Carte Orange.") It is especially useful for riding busses because, unlike the metro, busses don't have free transfers between lines. And while the metro will get you there fast, from a bus you can see Paris. NaviGO is an electronic pass. You wave it over or near a sensor at the bus or metro entrance. It is sold by the calendar month or calendar week (Monday through Sunday). It comes in a reusable transparent plastic frame for which there's an additional one-time charge. The first time you buy one, you have to attach your picture. Bring with you a full-face picture that will fit into the 3cm-square space on the card. With that (and some euros), you can get your NaviGO card from just about any metro station as soon as you arrive.
