I have been to Paris many times and stayed at several different 1-2 star hotels. The Mistral is a typical Parisian old fashion hotel with atmosphere (and narrow stairs...), way above expectations in the budget category! Good location being close to the Metro and bus stops. Shops, cafés, bakeries and plenty of restaurants in the vicinity. Nice English-speaking staff. Clean rooms with hairdryer, TV, and private facilities. Buffet breakfast, if you want that. Larger rooms than the other hotels I've stayed at. 5 stories and no elevator may explain that it's only rated as a one-start hotel!

Not knowing major cities can be a hit or miss shot at finding the right place to stay. We flew into Charles de Gaul and I had first thought of staying near the airport. As the airport is way out of town we tried to find a budget hotel that was convienient as well as comfortable. The Mistral was way above our expectations. Room number one was large, clean and had smallish bathroom with a shower. Like all of Europe, they don't believe in a kettle for making that early morning tea/coffee. The hotel is situated half a mile from Gare de Lyon, along Rue Diterot. This is very handy for travelling to all the sites. The hotel was ideal for our needs and we will use it again.

Top Local Tips for Paris
Getting around Paris We arrived at Charles de Gaulle, terminal 2 a, found the RER line B, changed at Chatelet for Metro line 1, Vincennes and got out at the metro for our hotel - it is on their website, I forget the name. We left for the south of France by TGV from Gare de Lyons, which was a convenient 15 minute walk from the hotel. we used the maps of the metro system of Paris and buses to get to where we wanted to go for the day and then walked to all the sites we wanted to see in that area. The boys soon figured out the metro and were more adept at finding our way than I was.
