great breakfast!
from nancykathyvery good location
from Bunny00The location is very good, many places are in the work distance or when you get tired walking there are also metro stations very near by. you can also find many bars and restaurants in the area.
Just remember that it is a low budget hotel so you should't be expecting something really fancy. The rooms are small and don#t have tv etc., but at least we only stayed there pretty much to sleep between exploring the wonderful city. The prices are very good in paris and also breakfast is included.
The staff was very friendly and english speaking and always ready to answer our questions.
Perfect for students (and others!)
from A TripAdvisor MemberIdeal for students, those on a budget, and those looking for a fun area to stay in. Probably not the best place for a romantic getaway - the emphasis is on functionality rather than style - but other than that it was great and we really enjoyed ourselves.
Not a good experience
from Cuca020Superb Low Budget Accomodation
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe hotel is basic (no elevator or tvs in room), but clean and well managed. The location is as good as any in Paris: a 3-4 minute walk to Notre Dame and the Seine, the hotel is quite near the metro Maubert-Mutualite and between the Blvd. St. Germain and the Rue des Ecoles. The Sorbonne and the Musee Cluny are only 2 minutes away.
The area is safe and relatively quite; the hotel management speaks English and is as helpful as any in Paris, whether giving advice about sight-seeing or the best way to reach one of the Paris airports or train stations.
The Marignan is not luxurious, but it is a friendly and lively place that includes breakfast in the price of the room (unusual in Paris) and the free use of laundry facilities. The Marignan's small lobby and breakfast room make for a hectic morning at times, but the staff is always willing to help in any way possible.
Those who cannot haul their bags up a narrow staircase perhaps should look elsewhere, but for those who want a clean, safe, economical, and friendly place to rest after a long day of walking around Paris, the Marignan is an excellent choice.
Again: the location on the Left Bank in the heart of the Latin Quarter is a perfect location for those who are particularly interested in exploring the 5th and 6th arrondissements. And the Marais and the rest of the center of Paris is within easy walking distance.
For budget accomodations in Paris, it would be difficult to find better than the Marignan.
Less than expected

from TessacaBuyer Beware
from mtroomFriendliness of the staff-No complaints actually, and I don't agree with anyone who said they were treated like a nuisance. I found Paul Keninger and the rest of the staff to be very friendly and accomodating. His only fault is being completely frazzled and operating on an un-organized system for assigning rooms. For example, my 2 friends arrived after I did and the only place he had to put them was a single room with two beds. The single room is already only about the size of a walk-in closet, so this arrangement was absolutely ridiculous. They finally talked him into making arrangements at another hotel down the street. This is how it should have been anyway since the hotel had already messed up our arrangements earlier.
Noise Level-Again, maybe the time of year and the fault of an old building, but it was LOUD. Loud to the point that my mother moved out and down to the Best Western from her single room. A few nights later I had to do the same thing because a drunk idiot was screaming obscenities from his sixth floor room. Luckily I had not paid yet.
The rooms were clean, as were most of the bathrooms. For a cheap place to stay, there are only so many repairs they can make at once. The top floor showers were beautiful. The lower floors, not so good and the drains had hairballs...pretty disgusting. The beds were very comfortable, but the thing I don't understand is why they don't put pillowcases on the pillows!
The breakfast in the morning is enough to get you out the door but the coffee was wonderful.
Complaints-
I understand they get a lot of young people in the hotel so there has to be a few rules, but some of them are ridiculous. I'm sure I broke a few.
There is no one on duty at night. This was extremely frustrating because when the noise level was bad, there was no one to complain to. Shouldn't any hotel know what is going on at all times? I felt like they just locked the place up and left, like a dorm without an RA. If they're going to have "rules" there should be someone around to enforce them.
The complete screw-up of my friends' reservations.
If you're young, if you're on a budget, and if you have a good set of earplugs, this place is for you. Personally, I don't want to stay in a place I have to make excuses for. That's how I felt at the Marignan. I have to say I wouldn't stay here again, but the Best Western next door is GREAT!
Top Local Tips for Paris
Don't forget the RER The RER is quieter, less frequented by tourists than the Metro and has some great little stops... and you can mostly get a seat for the long trek across Paris
Parc Astérix Don't go unless you are committed to spending lots of money, stand in long queues everywhere, eat raw hamburger meat, exchange your hamburger two times and get two more hamburgers with raw hamburger meat, finally go back home hungry with only 3 rides in the whole day. This has been our experience.
General 1) Buy a 'carnet' (pack of ten metro tickets). The metro is a big help for getting from place to place. 2) If you're interested in the cultural side of things, stay in the Quartier Latin- most things you'll want to see are within walking distance, or a short metro ride. 3) Try speaking a bit of French (no matter how basic) if looking for directions, or when in a restaurant, etc. The locals appreciate it- not everyone speaks English!
