This was our first time in Paris, so don't have another hotel to compare it to, but we were very satisfied. The rooms were very quiet and clean - a nice haven from the business of the tourist areas at the end of the day! We stayed there a week and had no problems and the room was kept clean and the staff were helpful and pleasant. The room was very small, but we were hardly there! Breakfast was plentiful and good value. Would recommend to anyone!

Hotel Room door left open all day

A friend and I spent a week in Europe dividing our time between London and Paris. In Paris we spend four nights in the Hotel Magellan. It was a nice, small hotel and the neighbourhood seem quiet nice.

We did have a tendency to get up late and miss our breakfast. But the one time we did, proved to us we really had not missed that much: Bread, cold meats, coffee and juice (no croissants, which I though was strange.)

But the one thing that completely tainted my view of the hotel was the night we came back at around 10:30 -11:00 PM after being out all day. We found our hotel room door completely open!

The maid had obviously left the door open while cleaning our room, and left the door stopper in place. Our room was completely open. This completely freaked us out. We went down to the night desk clerk; he came to our room and calmly asked if anything was taken. Fortunately, after a quick look around, we still had our passports and the few gifts we had purchased, so we found nothing missing.

I think what pissed us off so much was the fact that he seemed completely unconcerned that this happened. All he said was that he would tell the manager the next morning.

When we left the next day, we settled our account, having used the hotel’s internet service and paid the 12 euros we owed. When I was asked how we liked our stay by the lady at the desk, I said we were a bit freaked out about the discovery of our room being completely open all day. She said that happens sometimes, when the maids forget to close the door.

All that my friend kept repeating is how he couldn’t believe they asked us to pay for the internet service and didn’t even offer to cancel the charge. Personally I would be less pissed if at least one person had apologized for what happened or shown some actual concern.

Let’s say I learned my lesson, and won’t be making the same mistake twice and booking at the Hotel Magellan no matter how good a deal it seems.

My husband and I really enjoyed ourselves and loved the quiet location of this charming hotel. People should be aware that it does not have air conditioning, which was not a problem for us this summer (2005), because of cool temperatures in Paris. However, had it been hot, it would have been unbearable. All that said, we thought the hotel was lovely and charming and very reasonably priced. We were able to get anywhere by metro very quickly.

Don't believe the guidbooks! Don't be fooled by the guidebooks which tell you it is better to go to the Eiffel Tower at night. We went at 9:30pm and went to all the way to the "sommet" (top of the tower!). Here were our waiting times - to get tickets - 45mins, to get to the first lift - 20mins, to wait on 2nd floor for lift - 40mins, to wait at the top for lift down - 30 mins, to wait on 2nd floor for final lift down - 20mins. It may be much more during the day, I don't know. But our experience was made worse by the school groups who got put in ahead of the waiting tourists and the children who were grumpy and screaming after being dragged to the Tower late at night! Don't get me wrong, it was good to say I've done it - but use the stairs if you are able, or even go to the Dome at the Sacre Coeur/Notre Dame towers for good views across the city!
