charming bargain in the marais

i can't imagine a better bargain in paris. this hotel IS charming and ideally located. yes many of the rooms are small (abandon all vast american spacial standards) but others, such as the corner room my daughter and i switched to for not much more money, are Perfectly roomy for 2 people. the staff was boundlessly warm and helpful. i hope to stay there againandagainandagain.

We stayed at this hotel July 22 or 23 until the 26 this past summer. After staying at this hotel I raced to look up the dictionnary definition of "charming" and "sweet" because those two words do not describe this hotel! One person at a time in the elevator...and if you have a big suitcase you better send it up without you. Make sure you recommend a room on a lower floor (2, or 3). I was on the 5th floor and after a night of drinking wine at local restaurants it was not fun dragging myself up those stairs. The room is so small if you are fighting with your roommate (in my case, the boyfriend) you better make up soon because you have nowhere to look but at each other. No air conditioning...and if you leave the balcony door you risk being robbed (or worse) because the balconies are all attached. The bathroom is so small that if you are ass is shaped like Beyonce (as mine is) good luck shutting the door.
As a final surprise I found ants crawling on my backpack and in the bed on my last day. Believe it or not I am not telling you to stay away...I just wanted to tell the truth about how "charming" this place really is

What a fantastic hotel- great people, great location, great bargain! The room was cute and clean, and in a wonderful area. Jeanne d'arc was my husband's and my favorite hotel on a month long Paris to Rome vacation. Young and vibrant area, wonderful restaurants, never more than 3 or 4 metro stops (or a beautiful Paris walk) from many major attractions. We wouldn't stay anywhere else!

They charged me for an extra night! Be careful!

Be careful. We stayed there in June 2004 for 3 nights. Before we left we paid for all 3 nights. When we arrived home I discovered they had also charged our credit card for an additional night. I emailed them and they haven't responded yet. If I don't hear from them soon I intend to discuss it with my credit card company. I don't know if it was intentional or a mistake.

Perfect in Paris

We spent 3 days at the Jeanne D'Arc in June 2004 and found it to be a great bargain. Our room on the ground floor was enormous (though the TV is tiny -- but who watches TV in Paris?) with a bright green bidet and tub/shower to match. The staff is delightful and the location can't be beat -- great bars, restaurants, and creperies within 5 minutes. The Epouvantail restaurant is right next to the hotel and the duck and duchess potatoes there were superb!

You gotta love the lobby!

This is the best hotel in Paris if you are looking for a reasonably priced hotel that is safe for adventurous women and close to many excellent (and affordable) restaurants. My daughter and I love the lobby with the crazy mirror, numerous guidebooks and an always full candy dish on the reception desk!

I stayed at this hotel in November 2003 and was very very pleased with the condition of the hotel. I had read about it in a guide book and was slightly concerned because of how inexpensive it was. The rooms are small but very clean and the neighborhood is charming. I am going back to Paris this coming July and am bummed that the hotel is booked already. I hope to be as lucky with future hotel picks...wish I was staying at the hotel Jeanne d'arc again

Excellent hotel at a great location

This hotell turned out to be perfectly located in a quiet back street with everything within easy reach on foot or by metro half a block away. The english-speaking staff was very friendly and helpful with all our requests. The hotel is small, and so are the rooms, the bathrooms & the elevator (only one person at a time with luggage, or two persons without luggage) - which is fine for small people like me and my wife, but probably not suitable for larger, i.e. taller (the beds are short) or wider people. The two stars would otherwise easily be three. We will definetily stay there next time, as we really enjoyed both this area of Paris and the hotel. A great variety of foods can be bought within a short walk from the hotel, and the courtyard right behind the hotel offers a number of relatively quiet restaurants. Shopping is also easily available right nearby, from fashions stores to street markets - the Bastille market is only a 5 minute walk away - here locals by anything from fresh bread to meat, fish, and underwear. The river of Paris, La Seine, is only a 4 minute walk away, Notre Dame 10 minutes. Excellent deal for the money.

Good value for the money

Great value for the money! We just came back from a Europena vacation. The Grand Hotel Jeanne d'Arc was clean comfrotable and quiet. The only knock I would have is that the staff seemed to be somewhat aloof. We were there for three days and aksed for an extra pillow everyday and everyday we were told "we will have to ask Monsieur" We never did see one. The location is excellent as the Seine is close by and there are lots of restaurants.
The rooms had basically no views but obviously you are not in Paris to stay in your room

Great price, comfortable, attractive and very clean room, great location to see the major tourism sites. Definitely would go there again - friendly, helpful staff - lots of shops and restaurants close by and conveniently located for the underground. My daughter and I had a great time - wished we could stay longer. I would definitely recommend this charming hotel.

Top Local Tips for Paris

I love Paris in the springtime... But to my great surprise, I found I also loved it in the freezing cold of January. It was well below zero for most of our stay, so I recommend bringing a warm wool coat rather than a rain coat, a warm scarf (a fashion necessity in Paris anyway), gloves and a tidy hat--a beret would do (but please, leave the baseball caps behind). When it's too cold to be outside in January, you can always retreat inside the shops to warm up your credit card at the amazing semi-annual soldes (sales)!

cheap food options in the Marais If you are into Jewish food, there is a whole street (Rue Roisiers) with some great falafels, delis, and bagels. There is one falafel place in particular that is extremely good and extremely popular, and seems to be open late. Look for Lenny Kravitz's picture in the window. :)

So much to do, so little time First, if you plan to take public transit, either buy yourself a daily Mobilis card or a Paris Visite ticket, which is good for several days. We bought a couple of ten ticket carnets and found that the tickets often did not work, but when we bought a daily pass, we had no problems. In the past, I had bought the Visite ticket, but did not use transportation as much as I did this time, and later wished we had gotten this ticket. The metro and buses are very easy to use, and will get you to all of the attractions. Also, if you plan to see several museums buy a Museum pass, which will get you into all the major museums and most of the little ones. It is a bit pricey, but well worth it because it helps you avoid the outrageous queues at the Louvre and D'Orsay. We bought our ticket at the smaller Picasso musee because it is less crowded with little wait. In the past I went to the art and textile museum near the Louvre, which was a smart way to get the pass. There was no wait at all.
