Top Local Tips for Paris
Tipping in Europe If you go out to dinner the tip is usually included in the overall price of the meal. There is no need to tip the 15-20% like in the united states because you will end up paying double tip. So find out before you spend the extra euros if the tip is included. Also if the service is above or beyond the included tip then 1-2 euros per person is sufficient. Also we stumbled upon a great Moroccan restaurant called Al-Mounia. Try it if you have time!
Cafe Culture Be carefull of the prices when you sit at a cafe, especially outside. They tend to up the prices. My husband ordered a Coke at a cafe in St. Michel and we paid 8.50 Euro for it. That's about $12!!!
Make sure you get to Versailles Versailles is easily accessible via the metro & the fare is inexpensive. A half hour ride on the train drops you a 5-minute walk from the chateau, and it's not to be missed. Buy a Museum Pass at one of the Paris museums (Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre, etc.) and you will bypass the ticket line at Versailles (although there are portions of the castle for which you must buy a ticket on site, you can see plenty in the "regular" portion). Plan to include time in the gardens - they are amazing! Even my teenagers were impressed. There is a terrific little creperie on the walk between the metro station & the chateau. The menus are available in English, but the waiters speak little of it, so a minimal command of French is a plus.
