Top Local Tips for Paris
doing it with less Go in March, and spend less. Call the hotel for reservations, and pay less. Buy Metro ticket packets instead of individual tickets. Take one 22 inch rolling bag and a carry-on (backpacks are good), and use one of the many laundromats in the neighborhoods. Buy fruit, bread, sausage, cheese, and drinks in the local markets for a lot of meals. Finally, do the regular tourist things; then get out and see the off-beat museums, open markets, parks, and shops. Wear good walking shoes.
Ripoff at Gare du Nord Do not, I repeat, DO NOT take the first cabbie to approach you at the train station! We arrived on the Eurostar from London, tired and hot, wanting only to get to our airconditioned hotel in a hurry. We were approached by a driver, who was first in line, and told it would cost 120 euro to get to the hotel on the left bank. He had a printed sheet with prices on it, and we assumed all the taxi's would cost that. WRONG!! While it was a big, airconditioned cab, it was NOT worth that. No matter how tired and hot you are, check around. We found out later we could have gotten a ride to our hotel for 45 euro!
...instead of Paris Visite card We saved quite a lot of money bying a return ticket from CDG airport to Chatelet Les Halles station which connects with Les Halles metro station (16.80 euros return, RER B, 30 minutes trip)+ a pack of 10 metro tickets (11.40 euros). If you are prepared to spend a bit more time travelling, you can catch Paris city bus 350 or 351 (around 60-90 min, 4.50 euros or 3 metro tickets, check timetable because there are restrictions at night time). These options are not really suitable if you are carrying a lot of luggage. We did a lot of walking, essential if you want to appreciate the beauty of Paris!.
