Decent value (for Paris!), great location

Not a cheap hotel by any means but, by Parisien standards, a really nice, good value hotel in a great location.

We stayed in a superior room on the first floor which was contemporary, spacious and nicely furnished with exposed beams and a perfectly adequate bathroom. Staff are very friendly and it's nicely air-conditioned.

Can't comment on the breakfast because, quite frankly, you'd be crazy not to leave the hotel for food. The hotel's big strength is its location and you're in the heart of the city, an easy stroll from numerous cafes, restaurants and bars.

Location is also the one, very minor, downside. Le Marais is a buzzy part of Paris that attracts people into the wee small hours. We didn't find it too intrusive, but you will hear street noise in this hotel.

Overall though, being in Le Marais has many more positives than negatives if you're in Paris for the weekend. It's the one part of the city that stays truly open for business on a Sunday and is a simple walk from so much of this great city. We only used the Metro twice all weekend, to get to and from Gare du Nord.

Great location, clean and modern

This hotel looks excellent from the street - very modern and smart looking. Reception staff are exceptionally friendly. We stayed in room 42 on the fourth floor. It is small but for a couple of nights away, how much space do you need? There was an adequate wardrobe with lots of hangers, a big very comfortable bed with good pillows and a duvet type sheet, a minibar which was quite cheap (3 euro for a beer) and a safe. The bathroom was small but very clean and had a large window which you could open and sit in the (small) bath and look out of. Air con was a good temperature - cool without being chilly.
Breakfast was nice but not 11 euro worth - I recommend going to one of the dozens of 'salon de the' or patisseries in the area.
For a couple who enjoy nothing more than strolling round streets and finding little art galleries and other interesting shops and restaurants, you can't beat the Marais. Perfect Paris.

Great location - Pleasant staff

We stayed on the 6th (top) floor. Room and bath small, but clean and well appointed (including a small safe).

Hardly any noise from outside, but it's possible that you may get disturbed by the neighbouring rooms as the soundproofing could be better. Not a problem during our stay.

Air conditioning effective and quiet enough.

Desk staff always polite and friendly. Continental breakfast at 11 EUR fine, but maybe a little pricey.

The only downside for us was that Hotel de Ville metro is currently closed for refurbishment, so there was more walking than ideal.

We will probably return.

Outstanding location and good value

Of the scores of small hotels in the Marais, this is one of the best. The primary asset is an outstanding location, in the heart of the Marais, and very short walking distance to the sights and the Seine. The hotel's lobby is done in a very nice contemporary design, which is also reflected in the color schemes of the rooms. As said in posts elsewhere, rooms are tiny, but to be expected and the norm for the historic and tightly-packed Marais. But what separates their rooms from other Marais digs is that they look contemporary, fresh, clean and nicely laid out despite their small size. If you luck out, you may get a room with rustic wood beams and high ceilings (but that has happened only once to me in many different stays at this hotel). Book far, far ahead, as this hotel is in great demand by regulars.

A few notes of caution... Bring earplugs in case you get a room facing the inner courtyard: it has an adjoining restaurant that likes to make a lot of noise very early in the morning (unfortunately, lack of soundproofing in these historic buildings converted to hotels is another norm for the Marais). This hotel would be a bad choice for homophobes, as there are several gay bars nearby (the hotel itself attracts a diverse, upscale crowd and the greater Marais area is similar in diversity as Greenwich Village). There is Internet access in the lobby, breakfast in the wine cellar, and a concierge, but there is no restaurant and no room service. However, scores of restaurants beginning immediately across the street make up for the shortcomings.

Great Hotel in Super Location

This is a super little Hotel in a perfect location. The Hotel is small and so are the rooms but this is what you have to expect in Paris unless you are happy to stay on the outskirts and get trains into the city. The decor of the hotel is really funky and most importantly clean ! It has been recently renovated. The location is great - it is just behind the Hotel De Ville in The Marais district which is very cool and safe. The Metro is 2 seconds walk away and you are on a main line. From the hotel you are walking distance to teh Centre Pompidou, the Louvre, Bastille and Hotel De Ville.

The Price were also reasonable for the location. I have stayed in cheaper hotels in paris but would stay here again without a doubt !

One point to note is that The Marais is a mostly Gay area and some of the bars / nightclubs in the area are strictly gay which is something to be aware of.

Ideal stay

My husband and I booked a six-night stay to celebrate getting legally married as a gay couple in Massachusetts and Axial Beaubourg was an ideal place to honeymoon. We had a double room with shower/bath and though the room itself was small in footage, it was perfectly designed for comfort and effficiency. High ceilings kept it from feeling at all claustrophobic and the big windows were a great plus. The bed was terrific, and the shower's water pressure very good -- two things you can't always count on when traveling.

Beyond the room, the staff were helpful and friendly -- humoring my really poor French and cheerfully making up the difference in English as needed. The location was great -- not just for a gay couple but for anyone wanting to revel in the feeling of romantic Paris from years past. The hotel is a block from the Hotel de Ville metro and not much further from the Seine (you can walk to the two Iles easily). Rue St. Croix de Bretonairre is the next street up from the hotel and it's lovely (with a killer boulangerie on the corner of Temple), plus it leads to the shops and cafes of Rue Vielle du Temple which runs somewhat parallel to Rue Temple a few blocks over.

We would go back in a heartbeat.

Good location and nicely done. Despite everyone saying the rooms are small, you don't think they are going to be THAT small. Even the largest room is tiny. Lots of noise from the street late at night and first thing in the morning, so unless you are a VERY heavy sleeper take earplugs and we were on the top floor. Nice bathroom. No mirror in bedroom so very difficult for my wife to do herself up if I have had a bath or shower (mirrors all steamed in bathroom). Very comfy bed though and no gap in the middle. So many hotels use zip up beds/mattresses so they can be twins or doubles, not in this case. Didn't eat breakfast as so many good cafes offering a more French experience. Room was warm, cosy and more than adequate for a quick visit and sight seeing experience. Highly recomend Alain Ducasse' restaurant. Best meal ever, but cost as much for one meal as a weeks stay at this Hotel - depends what your priorities are. Hotel or food. For us in this case it was food. Otherwise would have stayed somewhere else. I put at above average as at this price I cannot think of anywhere else in Paris.

Good but not Amazing

Rooms are small - but thats the norm in Paris. The walls are VERY thin and noise travels very easily. My biggest gripe was the heating in the rooms - on arrival the room was boiling and the only way the temp could be kept to a pleasant level was by keeping the window onto the street open. Even tho' we were on the fourth floor the noise was considerable - especially on the Saturday night.
On the plus side the staff were helpful and spoke good english. Location is very central and easy to find.

Very charming place to be

We live in São Paulo - Brazil and stayed at this lovely hotel between 04 to 09 november/2004. Really the room was quite small but totally renovated and with a nice decor. At the Marais heart is a very charming place to be and the staff was always polite. Ask for a room at the 6th. floor with a beautiful view to Hôtel de Ville. Surely we'll be back !

A wonderful place to stay in Paris

I stayed at the Axial Beaubourg based on reviews from this site. The hotel is in the heart of the Marais, which is the center of gay (and Jewish) life in Paris. The rooms were tiny but very clean and modern. The staff were friendly and helpful. The location is very convenient to many major attractions including the Pompidou Center and the Louvre, as well as the shopping areas on the Rue de Rivoli and in the Bastille, and, of course, the many gay bars and restaurants of the Marais. This area has very heavy foot traffic, but I never had a problem with noise from either the outside or from adjacent rooms or common areas of the hotel. I would stay here again without question.

Top Local Tips for Paris

Subway is fine, BUT... The Metro is wonderful, but getting to and from the airport will entail going up and down several sets of stairs, so if lifting luggage is a problem, take the Air France to the closest spot, then taxi to the hotel, or take a taxi from the airport ( not too much price difference when its totalled). Don't take taxi to front door, but get dropped at bottom of the street (its one way, but hotel is only a block in)-otherwise you double the taxi cost.

Georges Go and have an afternoon cocktail at Georges on top of The Pompidu Centre.

Paris Metro Buy a 'Carnet' (a book of 10 train tickets) this is in my opinion, the most cost effective way of getting around Paris. The cost is 11 Euros and each ticket entitles you to travel anywhere in the Paris region. The metro is very well served with logical layouts and route numbers. The tickets can also be used on the bus routes and the regional train routes.
