Unforgettable views

The mattress sagged, the furnishings were shabby, the rooms were tiny - to be expected, the amenities sparse but those views are glorious. The seine, to be on the quai voltaire, the evening lights.....!

The Hotel do Quai Voltaire has been and forever will remain my favorite Paris hotel. Its location is superb: throw open your windows and you see the Palais du Louvre across the Seine. A few blocks west and you arrive at the Musee d'Orsay; travel south, away from the Seine, and you tumble into the Quartier St. Germain. Taxis stream by on the quai at all hours of the day and night if you want to travel farther afield. As far as history, the Hotel is another kind of Paris central: Oscar Wilde and Camille Pissarro are but two notables called it home. The hospitality is extraordinary as well. I had an extended conversation with one night desk clerk about French history and politics. Now, it must be said that the accommodations are modest: this is not a pretentious place, old-fashioned and with a certain shabby romance. You should not expect plush furnishings and state-of-the-art amenities. but when I go to Paris I do not sit in my room, so I don't care. (No TV, for example, but I detest TV so that's fine. And who needs an exercise room when you can walk for miles and admire the archihtecture?) My only small complaint is the frailty of the wattage in the electric lights, but that is universal in French hotels, even the pricey ones, in my experience. If you wish to be centrally located and treated with dignity, and do not want to waste money that can better be spent on food, wine, and fashion, the Hotel du Quai Voltaire will suit you perfectly.

Stayed at Room # 21 facing the Seine and Louvre. The views and location are unbeatable. The French doors leading out to the view made it feel like nowhere else but Paris. The street noise did not really bother me. The staff is very accommodating. The rooms are very basic, even faded which can have its charm. However after two nights on that mattress, my boyfriend and I were ready to buy futons at BVH - the local department store and haul them in for the rest of our weeklong stay. That being said I would stay there again but only for a maximum of two nights (unless they changed the mattresses for newer and firmer ones!).

It is frustrating that a hotel in such a great location should continue in such a dilapidated state. The room interiors are old and worn, the bathrooms in need of refurbishment. The communal areas downstairs aren't quite so bad but it is the bedrooms that are the real let down. Have stayed there twice now and after the last visit feel I could not recommend it to anyone.

We spent 2 nights at the Quai Voltaire, Paris in November of last year and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Ramshackle is probably the best way to describe the rooms, but what it lacks in luxury it more than makes up for in location and atmosphere. with rooms overlooking the Seine there is no better place to watch Paris wake up in the morning, St German is on your doorstep and the Louvre just across the river. Having visited Paris on several occasions and staying in various hotels we think, for the budget conscious visitor this hotel is ideal.

A view of the Seine and Parisian traffic whirring through the road below - even in the May rain we could feel the metropolis stretching before us. Run by calm, efficient and helpful staff, who instinctively understood a very English need for tea, this little hotel was a stone's throw from the Musee d'Orsay, the Louvre and Cathedrale Notre Dame, and walking distance from the Tour d'Eiffel. And with a Metro station just the other side of the road and river, the rest of Paris was just minutes away. Perfect for the long bank holiday weekend, though perhaps pricey for longer stays.

Top Local Tips for Paris

Don't forget There are no washclothes in the bathrooms so I brought the Dove cleanings clothes that have the soap in the cloth and all you need to do is wet them. They were a life saver
