Excellent location, walking distance of many major museums and galleries. Site near busy road junction, so noisy. Staff very welcoming and helpful. Room small, with shower, demi-bain wash cubicle very small and uncomfortable. However it was clean and tidy. Numerous excellent cafes nearby for meals.

Great value and excellent location within 2 minutes of Notre dame cathedral. Convenient to RER and cafes/restaurants. Friendly staff. Parisian ambience with balconies decorated with flower pots. Would stay again.

Hotel OK, Great Location

The hotel was basic and a bit worn, but the location was excellent. There were no serious issues. I was there for 3 nights in October.
The details: I asked for a regular pillow which was far better than the tootsie roll pillow. The bathroom was a good size, with good lighting, hair dryer, etc. The plumbing and hot water worked fine. The balcony was excellent, gave a great "view of the rue". The pictures on the website are the entire first floor! It is not a very big place, even by European standards. I skipped the breakfast because there are so many restaurants in the area. The shuttle service to the CDG Airport worked out great. The staff were reasonably friendly.
If you spend a lot of time in a hotel, you won't like it. But if you need a reliable place to stay while taking in Paris, this is worth it. It was a good value for the price.

Stayed at Hotel Royal Cardinal for 4 nights (Oct. 21, 2004) and I was frankly disappointed in the service. The room was very old with stains on the walls and chairs, and the back of the doors were worn down and frayed. The pillow on the bed is one long tootsie-roll instead of normal square pillows and they didn't change our sheets (which had holes in them) the entire time we stayed there! The one good thing about the hotel is the location.

We stayed on the 2nd floor in September. Had a Pie shaped room that was roomy and had a little balcony which we loved. Kept the balcony doors open while in the room until bedtime which kept the room cool. Sound proofing for outside was great. Even on the 2nd floor, with the doors closed the traffic was not noticeable. Not sure how it would be in summer though if you had to keep the doors open. If I had any suggestions for the hotel management, it would be to install ceiling fans to move the air around.
Didn't take the breakfast, too many little cafes nearby that we wanted to try. Location was great! we enjoyed walking to the Seine and used the Batobus and the close Metro.
Anna on the front desk was an absolute sweetheart. Spoke English well and did everything she could to make our stay pleasant. Only one electrical plug but we had taken a "strip" which was handy.

Great Value and Location

My husband and I stayed at the Royal au Cardinal the last week of July 2004 and we truly had a fantastic stay. The hotel was clean, the staff was extremely helpful, and the location was perfect! You can catch a metro just one block up the street, you are within walking distant to the Notre Dame, the Pantheon, and my favorite the Latin Quarter! If I was to return to Paris I would certainly stay here again. It was a great value! The staff was fantastic! I couldn't have picked a better hotel.

Great location!!! My husband and I stayed there in May 2004 for 4 nights. Considering the price and location this hotel was a great find!!! I read previous reviews on Tripadvisor.com and made sure to order pillows when I checked in (that made a great difference). The room on the 2nd floor was small, but comfortable and clean! The bathroom was clean and spacious. As to the noise - Hey, it's Paris! (this is in response to the 6/22/04 review) Did I mention the great location?

I have to disagree with the previous reviews somewhat. We didn't particularly enjoy our 7 night stay at this hotel. The room smelled moldy. It was a very cramped triple room.
We stayed at the hotel in June 2004, so the weather was very warm. No air conditioning and since the rooms open up to the busy main streets below it is impossible to sleep with the windows open. We were all hot at night and finally gave in and opened the window. We were there in early June. I can't imagine staying there in warmer weather.
The bathroom was very nice, though we didn't get soap or any amenities. Another guest mentioned she got some so I had to go downstairs and ask. Bathtub was very small.
Breakfast was a croissant, coffee, and juice. Definitely not worth the price. The spiral staircase was rickety. The metal strips holding the carpet in place were all over the steps so you had to be careful when you took the steps upstairs. The elevator wasn't working the day we got there, so we had to drag our suitcases up 4 flights of stairs.
We found the hotel to be rather noisy at night. People talking loudly in the hall and in their rooms. The walls aren't insulated well.
The beds were saggy and the neck pillows were not very comfortable. The wool blankets hadn't been washed in awhile and had a funny smell. There was just a wardrobe with very few hangers so we had to keep all our things in our suitcases. We each had a small suitcase, but there wasn't much room for them in the room.
The location was good. We were near 2 metro stations, which made it very convenient. We were a short walk from Cluny-Sorbonne area where there were plenty of good restaurants.
The staff was ok. I would say not unfriendly, but they weren't outgoing. The worst thing that happened to us was we booked this hotel online at their secure site. We got a prompt confirmation email back via regular email with all of personal and our credit card information! I was not happy about this. I did receive a "Sorry you weren't happy" email back. So, beware when booking this hotel in terms of safety and credit cards!
We paid 130 euros a night, so for that amount of money I will look elsewhere next time. I wouldn't recommend it to my friends.

Good location, Strange Quad

As the other reviewers have said this hotel's location can't be beat and the hotel staff are truly the best. There are also several places to do laundry in the neighborhood (for those of you who pack VERY light) and some very cool comic book stores. However, when I booked a quad room I guess I expected 2 double beds like some of the other reviewers said they had. Well, we ended up getting what I would call a very large bed. It was a double, a twin and a "cot" all pushed together in a room that could barely fit them. We ended up walking over the bed to get to the charming balcony. I did not complain to the management because we were 2 youngish coulples travleing together, not a family with older parents or something. I wanted to mention this so when people book in the future that they confirm what type of bedding they will recieve. Other than that the place is very clean and the bathroom large and modern.

I stayed here 30 years ago, and it's better today! We had a 5th floor room with a balcony and private bath (all the rooms have private baths now). Closest MO stop is Cardinal Lemoine. Great little bistros, and half a block away (on Rue Lemonge) is the BEST patisserie - Ke or Ka. Beautiful inside and everything is delicious. Hotel is within walking distance of Montparnasse, Louvre, Sorbonne, Notre Dame, etc. The breakfast wasn't free in March 2004, I believe it was 5 euro. We elected to go find a place and happened delightfully at Ke. For a quick lunch on the run (we took ours on the train back through the Chunnel), go across the street to Deux Bis for pannini. Most hotel staff speak some English - a "bonjour," "merci" and hand gestures work well! Bon voyage!

A nice little Hotel in the heart of the Latin Quarter. Excellent location for all of Paris.
Beds were a bit sagged, pillows were not, but the staff was great and the breakfast service on time and tasty. We were traveling with our 80-year-old father, and he found getting into the "tub-showers" impossible. There is a room with two double beds on the top floor that has a bathtub. (they moved us there after our first night.) If you have mobility problems, let them know. (NOT WHEEL-CHAIR ACCESSABLE {but then, where in Paris is?})
Resturants-- Try the Turkish place next door. Excellent and a good bargain. Tell them the two middle-aged American men and their 80 year old father sent you. Also, if you long for a burger, go one block west to "Breakfast in America" Run by Craig, another solid (albiet very American) resturant. All of the expats come here to get a taste of home.

These are very friendly folks! Clean, well-kept, French hotel. A stone's throw to walk along the quais. Walk to the Cluny, Notre Dame, and Sorbonne... Did I mention the wonderful staff?!have fun!
Top Local Tips for Paris
Fat Tire Bike Tour We took this bike tour our first evening and we all were so glad we did it. The guides (we had Bronwyn, she was wonderful!) were all helpful and fun. The also have day tours, which we didn't try, but next time we will!
Airport Shuttle! Make sure you the shuttle (mini-bus), get it because it really is worth it, we had no hassles, just a relaxing (or as relaxing as being driven by the frenchman can be!), journey.
Le cimetiere du Pere la chaise If you fancy a little stroll amongst trees and forget the busy life of Paris, go to the pere Lachaise cemetary. Each tomb tells a story, it's like a sculpture museum and you can find lots of well known persons. We go there every time we are in Paris, it's like stepping out of time.
