The best in Paris

I go there every month, the price is ecxellent and the staff is very friendly. There are a lot of shops and also le gare du nord. You don't have le grand luxe but you don't have to pay for that. This is for me the best hotel in Paris.

I've just returned from Paris and I'll try to help people who is thinking about staying at this hotel. It's not a good hotel. I mean, you can only use it to sleep and take a shower (at least if there's one in your bedroom). Beds are quite comfortable and noise can be stopped if you close the windows. People from hotel are friendly, they even lend you things as forks, knives, more towels..if you ask for it. The situation is great if you're a tourist, there are supermarkets, restaurants, bakery, apotheke...all near the hotel. It's not a family hotel but for youth, you get a free place to sleep. No bugs and clean every day.

Unhelpful and dishonest staff

I was unfortunate to accidently leave some items of clothing in my room when I left this hotel. I spoke to the manager and staff several times (as did my French housemate), and they promised to return my belongings if I faxed them my address, which I did twice. I offered to pay for the postage of course. I never received the items and they began to fob me off each time I called. Some of the staff were very rude on the phone. Very dissapointing.

Frankly, you get what you pay for. As a place to sleep for the night, it's great - comfy beds, shower (as long as you go ensuite) and great transport links. Staff are reasonably friendly, and contrary to other reviews, there are some electrical sockets. There is a lot of traffic on the road all night, but if you've spent all day exploring Paris like you should, you'll have no trouble sleeping. The elevators could be described as scary, but it's quite fun, and we saw no evidence of cigarette smoke or bed bugs. Just don't come expecting luxury.

Fabulous location and a more than eager staff greeted my friends and I during my 2nd visit to Paris and my 2nd stay at the Grand Hotel Magenta. It's nothing fancy, but it's clean and secure. Get a room ensuite, if possible, and be sure to take advantage of the stellar location (5 minute walk to Gare du Nord). Definitely going to stay here again the next time I'm in Paris!

Bed Bug Bites : Stay away from it even if you are broke!

I chose this hotel because it is very close to the train station. However, pay more and find a better and further place. This is the worst place I have even lived in. The staff was definitely unfriendly. The door to our room on the sixth floor could not be locked and the staff made it sounded like we didn't know how to lock the door. Not only that, but the beds were fulled of bugs. My friends and I were bitten by bugs all over our body. This was the worst experience ever. Our whole bodies were itchy and red spots appeared everywhere and we had to go to the doctors. For you own good, please stay away. I would have given the hotel a negative rating if I could. Youth hostels were far more better than this.

This hotel was definitly something. The elevators were terrifying... but you can't take the stairs because they slope so much and you just fall! Our room was on the top floor, so you couldn't walk in half of it because of the roof slope. We stayed for 3 days, and I could not bring myself to use the showers. oh! and there were cigarette burns in the bedding the size of my fist! Cheap, but would never stay there again.. ever.. ever.

Don't be fooled - it's awful

I visited this hotel in March 2005, and within two hours of being there had booked reservations at a different hotel. This place was awful - it was very dirty, with visible stains on the bedding, we didn't have an en suite room so the shower was three flights down and cost 3 euros. I didn't even bother looking for it. Situated adjacent to the red light district, it did not feel safe at all. The police sirens outside our window kept us up all night. There were no shades on the window, so the sun woke us at 6 am. The metal chair in the room was falling apart and had cigarette burns on it. My girlfriend and I are college students, and are by no means prissy travelers who need high-class accomodations. We spent our entire trip through Europe in low-cost hostels and enjoyed every other place but "Grand Hotel Magenta." The staff was indeed very friendly. And we were just as friendly back to them as we told them that we had found other accomodations. See "Hotel Voltaire Republique".

Shocking!

The whole hotel stunk of smoke. The shower was grim, but ok and did not cost anything. We had booked a twin room only to find that it was a very small double in the roof with a bed that seen better days. The single room that was booked was even worse with the bed linen in very poor condition. We gave the staff our passports for safe keeping and were not able to collect them hours before our departure as they were in the safe and the night staff did not have access to it. The owner needed to come before we got our passports and they tried saying it was our fault! Location is good for the station, but it's worth spending a touch more for somewhere habitable. The staff were very unfriendly, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Rooms were fine for the price, location good, right by Gare du Nord. Staff was friendly. BUT, someone please do something with that crack in a wall called shower with no windows or fan, mold on the ceiling, dirty tiles, awaful smell, and all that in 1 meter x 1/2 meter closet :(
