Great hotel

The hotel was really clean and smart and the concierge was lovely. We didn't try the breakfasts but were happy going to the local cafes.

All the rooms face onto the street.

The bathroom was amazing - new clean & luxurious, especially by Paris standards.

The location was fine - close to the metro and walkable into the city centre.

I would very much recommend this hotel.

I stayed at the Grand Hotel des Gobelins over a long weekend with friends (there were 4 of us, so 2 separate rooms). We only booked 2 weeks in advance, so all our top hotel picks were already booked solid. Therefore, we went with this hotel based on the reviews here.

We weren't horrified, but we weren't overly enthusiastic either. The hotel lobby is beautiful and gives a very good first impression. The rooms, however, left a little to be desired. I had requested 2 single beds in each room as we were all just friends and didn't necessarily want to share beds. Of course, we were treated with double beds upon arrival. No big deal. The rooms are no smaller than any other typical European hotel, so that was fine.

The room I stayed in had three sets of windows in the sleeping area and one in the bathroom, which was most welcome as the room really heated up at night. There was considerable street noise, especially Frfiday night, but it wasn't unbearable. The other room, however, had a much smaller bathroom and only one window to provide cooling relie.! The shower in my bathroom had problems draining during most of our stay, which was a little irritating since we were two females sharing a room and each morning one of us was stuck standing in the other's remaining shower water as we showered. Also, don't bother with brekfast at the hotel; the dining room is cramped and the selection is not so good. Instead, head to any cafe down the road and enjoy premium coffee and omelettes and croissants at half the price.

On a positive note, the hotel was an excellent bargain for Paris, and it is conveniently located near 2 Metro stops. There are also plenty of restaurants nearby. Take a tip on a dinner restaurant from the front desk: they should give you a flyer for Au Bon Coin, a very pleasant Parisian-style restuarant only 3 blocks away. The flyer also entitles each member of the party to a free Kir (yum!). The French Onion Soup is wonderful there!

All in all, this was not a bad hotel nor a wonderful one. It's certainly a good choice for travelers on a budget.

Good Quality Hotel

We spent 2 nights at the Grand Hotel des Gobelins and were very impressed by the standard and cleanliness of the room. The bathroom was spacious and modern, and other than needing a lick of paint here and there, we couldn't really fault it, especially for a 3 star hotel. Bus and metro stops were very close, along with a good-sized supermarket. The breakfast was of a high standard, with fresh fruit juices, lovely bread and croissants, and all the usual cereals, cheese etc and even had proper tea. The staff were very friendly, and we were able to leave our luggage on the last day after we'd checked out, which was very handy. We'd definitely recommend it.

We stayed at the Gobelins for 3 nights on a Eurostar package. It was very reasonably priced (the total package for train and hotel was around 533 pounds). The staff were very friendly and helpful, spoke English, and the hotel room was immaculate. Excellent breakfast provided, close to three Metro stops and in a vibrant neighborhood. Highly recommended!

Great Stay

My girlfriend and I stayed at the hotel for 3 days, staff were extremely friendly and helpfull, breakfast was excellent and the rooms were very clean and comfortable, easy access to all parts of Paris and the area around the hotel is amazing with lots of nice restaurants and the outdoor market is great, highly reccomend this to anyone travelling to Paris.

Stayed at this hotel with my close girlfriend. It was very straightfoward to get to from Gard de Nord train station(we had taken the eurostar from london-took maybe 30min (with luggage). Rue Moufftard is literally a 10min walk- found thee best boulangerie on the walk there---you know you've spotted a good one when there's of queue of locals outside it.
Yes- the room was small, and we originally wanted to ask for a bigger one, but we then decided to stay with it. I had read in the reviews that the rooms were small, but the bathroom is quite large. Everything was very clean. There is no mini-bar( didn't bother us) nor was there a safe in the room, but honestly Paris felt like one of the safest european cities that i have visited. Women should always be cautious, as you would even in your home-town. We both found that the area surrounding the hotel was mainly locals and that we were in very close walking distance to the metro (Gobelins), but often we preferred to walk everywhere. I would definately consider staying at this hotel again. It is small, quaint, and very Parisian. The staff were always helpful and courteous. Would recommend "Le Jardin D'Ivy" for dinner (on Rue Moufftard)-really Delicious french cuisine, check out the artwork as well. Shopping- La Marais area. Walks, for sure along the Sienne. We both felt very safe taking the metro home late at night, and also walking to the hotel from the metro at night.

Great staff and very good location

Just got back after couple of days there. All staff were very friendly (the reception staff spoke very good English) and location was very convenient for the Metro (Les Gobelins). The rooms were a bit small and basic, but not a problem - we were staying there to see Paris, and not to stay in a plush hotel. The rooms were a bit warm and there was lashings of hot water (nice after a hard day sightseeing!).

If you want luxury, then this is not for you, but we would definitely recommend it and happily go again.

My husband and I stayed at Le Grand Hotel des Gobelins in Oct 2005 and had a wonderful stay. The clerk who greeted us upon checkin was extraordinarily friendly and accomodating. The other staff we encountered were also amiable. The night desk clerk referred us to a nearby restaurant in the area (about a 10 minute walk) that was spectacular. We feasted on authentic Parisian cuisine for 13,50 Euros each (sorry, the name of the restaurant escapes me). The room met expectations. The bathroom looked brand new and was quite large. It took some getting used to having a hand-held shower head and no shower curtain, but it ended up just being a nice excuse to take baths, which I normally would never do in a tub that is not my own, but was comfortable doing here since the tub was literally shiny and spotless. The breakfast room is very cramped, but the croissants were good. A word to the wise....don't get on the breakfast ladies' bad sides! Both that we saw on different days were abrasive and made some guests uncomfortable. The hotel location suited us just fine and we enjoyed the fact that we were not completely surrounded by other tourists. The hotel is about a 5 - 10 minute walk to the nearest metro and we rarely had to wait more than 3 minutes for a train to arrive.

Friendly staff, clean rooms, tiny breakfast room, but the hotel is right across the street from a great patisserie. Ask for a room facing the city. The view is unbelievable. Right around the corner from the Metro, but also it is just a nice walk to the Louvre. There is a street market nearby where you can get fresh bread, meat, fruits, and vegetables. The market next door has a great wine selection. I wish I were there right now.

When staying in Paris, we thought, we wanted somewhere...well Parisian! This little hotel is so full of character. The rooms are, yes small, but clean and comfortable. What makes this hotel are the lovely staff who are friendly and helpful, (especially the lovely waitress in the morning) Breakfast is fresh and ample,but just keep your fingers crossed that you choose a quiet time as space is very tight!
The Mouffetard area is fantastic. The morning market is full of the fresh smells of France, cheese, coffee, bread, etc. The restaurants and bars are full of character and you feel like a local not a tourist.

Paris Metro The hotel has great brochures (in English) that map the Metro and city streets (it's sponsored by Galleries Lafayette). This brochure is invaluable for getting around. Some of the Metro entrances don't sell tickets or have a ticket machine, but the entrance at the southeast corner of Avenue des Gobelins and Blvd. St. Marcel does have a ticket window. It really is the absolute best way to get around the city in between strolling the beautiful streets.

definately take a look at Saint Chapplle you'll be stunned in the beauty of the stained glass windows but make sure to look up directions because it's hard to find.
