The hotel is quite lovely. The rooms are decorated beautifully. The front desk personnel are very helpful. The location is excellent; convenient and within walking distance to all the sites.

Charming... for a mouse

from InMyOwnWords
Don't believe the beautiful web page for Le Grand Hotel Champaigne; it is not "grand," and although some efforts have been made to decorate tastefully, the rooms are not particularly charming, unless you stay in one of the 5th floor suites. We booked a triple room, but were lodged in a "double" room with an added bed. There was literally one foot of space to walk-- so cramped that the door to the tiny bathroom (with a small stall shower) could only open half way. The triples are somewhat larger, and have a full bath, but are on an air shaft (called the "courtyard") with no ventilation. Still, it was very clean and extremely well located on a quite street walking distance from the Louvre, Notre Dame, the Latin Quarter.

A great 3 star hotel in Paris

from georgewalker
This is better than you might expect from a 3 star hotel in Paris. It is in a great location near the Louvre and near the metro. Yes the rooms and bathrooms are small but thats true of almost all 3 and 4 star hotels in Paris. They were however well appointed.

As to those reviewers who are moaning then they probably do not know whats on offer in Paris. If you want much better than this you really need to stay at one of the larger and much more expensive hotels. This one is great value for Paris.

I'd stay here again in particular because of the location. Oh and by the way breakfast was good too. Much better that the usual croissant and coffee you get in Paris.

Honeymoon in Paris

Cute hotel ... great location! The hotel is very close to all the main attractions including shopping and restaurants. The rooms are tiny but cozy. The staff is friendly and available 24 hours. However, the hotel is a little pricy overall.

Cannot recommend

from A TripAdvisor Member
Great location with pretty rooms but the management couldn't run a bath. A complaint at midnight about loud music received the response 'yes, that's the guy next door, he'll stop by 3am'. After an hour's pleading we were moved to another room. Next day, no apology, but instead 'weren't you lucky to get a better room'. Well, no actually, it was really annoying. Other little annoyances included blocked shower so you had to stand in 2-inches of cold water, heating stuck on full blast and breakfast delivered to room 30 min after the requested slot. I couldn't recommend.

Great Hotel with Good Location

from Airplane99
Stayed in a single for 3 days in late November. This hotel is exactly what you should expect from a 3 star Paris hotel. Rooms and bathrooms are smaller than found in the US, but every room in Paris is the same and should be what you expect. As previous reviews stated, the elevator is quite small, but again, this is Paris. Staff was helpful and the breakfast offering looks nice, although I did not partake. Within 1 block of an entrance to the Chatelet metro station making it easy to travel throughout Paris and the RER B goes directly to CDG airport from the station with no changes. Two blocks from the Seine, 10 minutes walk to the Louvre or to Notre Dame. Is located on a quiet street away from the late night / early morning noise typical of Paris. Some may also consider this a downside, as the location also does not have a large volume of people traffic in front of the hotel, particularly later at night. Overall, would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Paris. If you want US sized room / marble bathrooms / etc..., stay at a 4 star and expect to pay upwards of 300 euro/night.

Would I stay here again?

from A TripAdvisor Member
The answer is absolutely NO! First, the pictures depicted on their website are nothing like the rooms we had. Stayed with 10 friends during a 6 day period and it was not worth the rates we paid! I would say the hotel has a very friendly staff and the location is great, but my decision was based on the hotel's website. Needless to say, I was disappointed at what I had received for the rates I paid.

Decent Hotel

from Geneva_Diplomat
My wife and I stayed there for 3 nights during the Easter break in 2003. We got a pretty good deal via the internet, about 120 euros a night including breakfast. The hotel's main selling point is the location - near the River Seine and a short walk to Rue de Rivoli shopping street & the Louvre Museum. Other major sights in Paris are juist a short Metro ride away from the Chatelet subway station. Clients may find the little mini-supermarket round the street corner convenient, particularly if your reservations does not come with breakfast. There's also a good Japanese restaurant (Sushirama) next door that serves Japanese style-brochettes (barbecued kebabs). However, some people may find the hotel rooms crummy, dingy and old. The carpet in our room could benefit from a good cleaning. The bathroom for instance, did not come equipped with shower curtains. But such things are to be expected from Parisian hotels. It's important to shop around the internet and seek advice from friends who have been to Paris before making reservations.

Not Worth It

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I stayed three nights in a room on the first floor of the Grand Hotel de Champaigne in September 2004. I paid $230 per night, which might be a normal price for this location in Paris. The hotel is in a $400 location (a 20 minute walk to the Louvre entrance). However, the room was a $25 room. The value of the location ($400) and the quality of the room ($25) average $210, so I guess I was not ripped off. But I felt ripped off. Paris is not a large city. You can see a lot on foot. Or you can easily get around by metro. In other words, you do not have to pay over $200 for a lousy room less than a mile from the Louvre.
The positives - (1) the location; (2) the staff was friendly and helpful (I agree with everything the man from Lankanshire said, except about the staff); (3) the facade of the hotel is pretty; and (4) the room was clean (except behind the radiator).
The negatives - (1) the room was tiny - about 10 feet by 10 feet (we had to lay one suitcase on the desk and one on the floor; there is little room to walk); (2) the shower was tiny - about 3 feet by 3 feet (it was like showering in a gym locker); (3) the water pressure was fair; (4) the TV was small and old, and the remote control did not work well (I did not go to Paris to watch TV, but I wanted to watch before bed and in the morning); and (5) the room was noisy (I thought the walls were made of stone).
About the noise: I could hear my neighbor's TV and plumbing after he woke up at 5AM. I could hear people walking up the stairs at 2AM. I could hear every flush of the toilet and turn of the faucet. My wife was woken up by trucks making deliveries or garbage pickups at 6AM (the rears of stores face the narrow street on which the hotel is located). Also, undesirable people hang out on the narrow street.
In short, the hotel was not worth $230 a night. If this is the going price for this location then stay further away from the Louvre. I felt ripped off paying this much to stay in a "cardboard box."

A nice location

from A TripAdvisor Member
We had a pleasant stay in the hotel. Clerks were nice enough to answer any questions we had. The location is superb because it is only one block to the river Siene. Since we traveled with two kids, the supermarket next to the hotel was a big help. We bought breakfast and snacks there. It opens at 8:30am. We also had a nicely decorated suite for four of us. It has one and half bathroom. With 200 euro a night, it is worthwhile. We will definitely will go back.

Great stay

from JoeCal
We stayed at the Hotel de Champaigne this June and we had one of the suites for my family of 5. The room was large and very comfortable. If size of the room is an issue, get one of the suites! The hotel was great, the location is excellent and the staff was friendly and helpful. I can't speak to the breakfasts as we did not take breakfast in the hotel. We were very happy with this selection and would definately return in the future.

Top Local Tips for Paris

Get along with the Frence Try to learn as much French as possible, even a hello will help you break the ice.

Moulin Rouge We went to the Moulin Rouge because we had heard all the hype. IT WAS HORRIBLE......Overpriced........paid 15.00 for salad with no dresseing just lettuce and 2 slices of tomato. Packed us in like sardines. Then the show was acomplete joke. Dancers not in sync. BAD sound system. We walked out......In a bad part of town full of strip joints and peep shows. SAVE YOUR MONEY.....NOT WORTH IT.....The French should be embarassed........

Use the train Use the train when coming from Charles de Gaulle -- it's easy, inexpensive, and the fastest way into the city!
